  • This Video is only for the REAR SENSOR.
    Does the ABS Dashboard light and Traction Control light come on on your Jeep Wrangler JK or JKU? Possibly your car feel like it isn't running smoothly as if it is starting to run out of gas? It could be your ABS Sensor. If you validate your REAR ABS sensor is failing, this video shows you the close up details on how to replace it? This video specifically illustrates the left rear wheel but the same method applies to the right rear wheel. The specific Jeep shown on this video was a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Sport 2 Door JK 3.6L. This process should be similar for all JK models for the REAR sensor. Understand that the area of the sensor can get very dirty from road debris over time. This can make it difficult to remove the electrical connection. Be prepared that this task may take a little longer as you remove the connection.
    Please follow all safety precautions - Car is off, emergency brake is on, make sure it is not hot, wear safety glasses and gloves if appropriate. This video should be used for information purposes only and it should not be attempted by anyone who does not have experience working on their vehicle. Use a certified automotive mechanic to ensure your car / Jeep is fixed correctly. Thank you for watching ‪@JohnsJeepGarage‬! #Jeep #JeepWrangler #JeepLife

    Good video, although I envy how easy it was for you to get the connector off. The corner of the red clip broke so I went to the other side, the red clip slid out completely... So I'm trying to get the connector off but it won't budge, I used pliers and of course it's stripping the plastic away. There should be nothing else holding this connector on if the red clip came out. I'm afraid if I keep messing with it I'll just destroy the connector. I called some local mechanic's and they all said it's about a 100 dollars..

    • @JohnsJeepGarage
      @JohnsJeepGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Clean it well because the road grime and dirt builds up and creates these things to stick. Use a degreaser cleaner then Try to use WD40 or PB blaster … I know it is not metal but it needs lubricant because if the plastic clip is off then it has to be just a friction holding it with the road build up.

    • @JohnsJeepGarage
      @JohnsJeepGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Temporarily you can use electrical tape, but these tabs are a pain in a variety of the connectors. I have also temporarily used larger heat shrink tubes. The ultimate solution is replacing the connector. I don't practice it enough but pre-lubricating the connector may allow it to slide easier but I only think of that after I have broken one.
      I was just looking up to see if there are any places a variety of red locking tabs can be purchased versus these connections, but there are so many different sizes. And most of the posts were stories of tabs breaking or sticking. They are meant to slide in and out of locking position. The next older Jeep I do I am going to try to let it soak in WD-40 or PB Blaster first (even though it is plastic). IF there is one complaint I have about many of these connections, it is the strength of these red locking tabs.

    Great video, and thanks for the insight but those red tabs do not slide out on mine. I put on some serious pressure. I thought was going to break it. I did get it to pop, it flew across the garage, but the plug still would not come off. Apparently, there is something else holding it on, which I broke trying to take it off. Then the sensor would not come out. It was like it was glued in there. When I did get it to move, it came out halfway, and I had to use pliers to pull it out the rest of the way. The sensor was bigger than the bore of the hole. You could see the scrap marks when I pulled it out. This proved to be the same issue when putting in the replacement sensor. It took a lot of effort and a little sanding to get it through the hole. Finally, thinking I was done, I took it for a ride, and the ABS and traction lights are still on. I replaced the one the dealer said was dead. Going to try the driver's side tomorrow. Hopefully, my Jeep is kinder to me on that side.

    • @JohnsJeepGarage
      @JohnsJeepGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few questions... the red locking tab is a common electrical connector which should release. What year is your Jeep? The sensor that was in there was tight in the hole when removing it? I am not sure how the other person got it in there. I have replaced many of these and never seen this issue. I am curious what you discover. Those sensors are made to fit the holes ensuring the one you purchased is right for that year model. But because the original one was too big or tight is new to me. Thank you for sharing.

      @@JohnsJeepGarage 2015 wrangler. I know, it's weird. I saw other videos, and a few had trouble with the tabs, but no one had an issue removing the sensor. I had the same issue on both sides. Thank you for watching. I am going to find out more on the size difference. Thank you for sharing. One thing to note, I do have a ABS/SRS & OBD2 Computer. A normal OBD2 cannot recognize the ABS fault nor can it clear it. When I change them, the light goes off, but I still go back in a clear the fault history.
      Though your light went out and as a driver may not notice, the next time you go to a dealer or auto shop, they may tell you you show a rear ABS sensor fault. This may only be because it was never cleared in the history/stored codes.

    Found your video very helpful, I replaced the sensor but when going to plug back in the connector will not seat. Any recommendations or ideas?

    • @JohnsJeepGarage
      @JohnsJeepGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching our channel. I am glad it helped you. I am going to make a few suggestions based on past experience. I can only make some assumptions. Ensure the female connection on the vehicle is clean and free from debris. That area of the vehicle gets a lot of dirt & grime road build up. Some debris could have found its way on the connection. Use an electronic cleaner spray and ensure the area is clean where it slides and connects. Another option is the red safety lock may have moved or been bent or damaged (soft plastic) during removal. Look at it on the connection and make sure it looks correct (compare it to the other side). So once you place the connection on the sensor, red tab has to be back (open) you connect the connection the can slide the red tab in / push it in. If it is pushed in first, it won’t connect.
      Sometimes it is connected but you don’t feel the “snap” when locked in. Obviously you don’t want it to come off but if it has a tight fit (not loose) it normally will not slide off. This is not a preferred practice but you may need to reinforce it temporarily with electrical tape or drop of silicone. I am only suggesting this as a short term temporary aid as you troubleshoot.
      If it is clean and the red tab is in working order, it should work. Another test is to remove the sensor again (added work) and try to connect it to see if it fits the connection correctly. Could the sensor end, though new, have something preventing it from connecting all the way.
      I am only doing some brain storming of ideas to troubleshoot.

    • @JohnsJeepGarage
      @JohnsJeepGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching. I have done this multiple times and others have as well. I do hear about it not seating at times but not often. Based on my investigations and follow up with some others, I can only assume a couple issues without actually seeing it. Make certain it is the correct aftermarket sensor, or return and see if another fits more securely... Possible defect or plastic burr. Ensure the connector from the Jeep is cleaned with electrical cleaner to ensure there isn't any debris preventing it to seat all the way. Also ensuring the red tab is pulled back and not pushed in or damaged. (see comments above on other response)

    What do you do when the plug breaks at the red tab?

    • @JohnsJeepGarage
      @JohnsJeepGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Question- did the red locking tab break off or pull out? Or did the actual plug break? Those locking tabs are a pain sometimes and can get stuck to to all the road grime and dirt. Also older plastics can become brittle. I use a pick if it is the tab to pull it all out then use a lubricant like WD40 to help reduce the friction caused buy build up around the plug. I then carefully grip with small channel locks or pliers and firmly tug out to remove the plug. Depending on the condition of the plug, you can firmly reconnect. You can buy new rear plug sets fairly inexpensive.

Normally 40-50K if you drive more frequently in dirtier conditions. So if you have the extra cash and are working on one side, it doesn't hurt to do both.
