Triumph Motorcycles has launched its most affordable motorcycle in the Indian market, the Speed 400. Popularly known as Triumph 400 among the riders, this new product will be manufactured by Bajaj Auto in Maharashtra, India, and it has been priced aggressively.
The styling cues on this sub-500cc motorcycle comprise a Speed Twin-inspired design. Thus, it packs a round headlight, a semi-digital instrument cluster, a curvy fuel tank with knee recesses, a step-up seat, and a side-slung exhaust. It also boasts the classic Triumph engine profile with a triangle badge, finned cylinder head, and exhaust header clamps. The colour palette, similar to the international market, comprises three options - Carnival Red with Phantom Black, Caspian Blue with Storm Grey, and Phantom Black with Storm Grey.
The feature list is at par with most of its rivals, and the 2023 Triumph Speed 400 gets full LED lighting, a semi-digital instrument cluster, ride-by-wire throttle, a switchable traction control system, dual-channel ABS, and an anti-theft immobiliser as standard. The instrument cluster comprises a large analogue speedometer and an LCD screen that displays a tachometer, fuel range remaining, and a gear indicator.
Then, the mechanical specifications include a 398.15cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that it shares with the Scrambler 400 X. Linked to a six-speed gearbox, this motor delivers a maximum output of 39.5bhp at 8,000rpm and a peak torque of 37.5Nm at 6,500rpm. The gearbox benefits from a slipper and assist clutch mechanism. The motorcycle continued with the same design but received a few subtle updates in 2019 which give it a fresh appeal. It is available with the choice of two colour schemes- Aurora Green and Vine Black. In terms of equipment, it features a data-extensive instrument console providing host information to the rider along with a secondary display on the fuel tank.
It also gets premium-looking side mirrors, forged side stand and a double-barrel exhaust. In order to maximise the touring abilities, the 2019 Dominar comes with straps located beneath the pillion seat that can be used to mount luggage using bungee cords.
Coming to the mechanical upgrades, the motorcycle now features inverted front forks borrowed from the KTM range. And with that, it also gets a radial caliper for the braking system up front. The rear continues to sport a monoshock and a single disc for braking. Dual-channel ABS is standard.
Next is the motor. It’s the same 373.2cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, fuel-injected mill that comes with a DOHC configuration. This has allowed Bajaj to extract more power from the engine which now produces 39.4bhp of max power at 8650rpm and 35Nm of peak torque at 7000rpm. The kerb weight of the bike stands at 187kgs.
In its price segment, the Bajaj Dominar 400 competes against the Royal Enfield Himalayan, KTM 250 Duke and Suzuki Gixxer 250
