  • Working on your first model can seem a little daunting. You might be concerned that your lack of experience will be an issue or that they’ll judge you against your more experienced peers, but in reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
    When you hire a real model you’re paying for more than just their time. As photographer Gavin Hoey demonstrates, an experienced model will be comfortable in front of the camera leaving you time to concentrate on the basics like exposure and composition.
    You don’t have to worry about how to pose a model and they’ll even be able to give you some pointers if your ideas run dry. Gavin packs this video with top tips to help you get the most from your first model session, including keeping your ideas simple and having two different looks planned out.
    The saying “practice makes perfect” is all well and good but the value that a real, experienced model can bring to your next studio portrait session is priceless.

    For me, one of THE MOST IMPORTANT lessons I learned many years ago that Mr. Hoey mentions is ...
    Ask the model if she has any ideas. Trust me, and Mr. Hoey, when I say ... OH HELL YES THEY DO!!!!! Models are people too. Photographers tend to forget that in my experience. I usually start by talking with the model while they are in Hair & Make-Up if it is a proper shoot. Gives them a chance to get to know me and I get the chance to learn some about them that can come in handy during the shoot. Most of all ... again ... ask the model if she has any thoughts/ideas cause ... OH YOU BET SHE DOES! And your images are now going to an entirely new/higher level. Just don't forget to thank the model for her help and credit her when you can. As "Lucy Shepard" (the President's Daughter) said in the movie "The American President," ... "Girls Like That!" 😀(Huge Grin)

    I don't mean to nit-pick here because I Love your photography. You really do create amazing images. Most of us do understand the purpose and the point of shooting the complete Black frame. To make sure that there is no other ambient light coming into the frame @ 1/125, f4.0, 100 ISO setting. Having total control over the studio lighting. By the time you take the next shot though, you changed the ISO from ISO-100 to ISO-200 @1/125, 4.0 without giving a reason. The whole point of the test-shooting at the first setting was to find out if the camera was detecting any other ambient light at ISO-100. Am I wrong here? Please don't misunderstand, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the image. I'm just trying to understand why this was overlooked or if it was just a missed point or edit without comment.

    Haven't watched one of your videos in a month or two as I've been busy with other stuff lately. So apologies if you mentioned this in one of those videos I missed, but one of the first things I caught in this video is that you're shooting at ISO 100 instead of 200. What's driven that change?

    Models..... now there's a can of worms if you are just starting out.
    You may get lucky but some won't work with you unless you have an 'worthy' reputation. Others will say yes and ghost you. Don't panic. It's not you, it's just the way it is. There are those who will work with beginners ( like myself). Be patient, go to club meets, go to arranged shoots and get some portfolio pics together. I struggled at first, but learning how it works now booking professional models to pose for me. 😊

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question. Lens focal length and apparent angle of view is directly connected to the sensor size. So when you say 50mm or 80mm you're referring to a "full frame" (35mm format) sensor.
      I'm using a micro 4/3 sensor which is half the length and half the hight, so my equivalent focal length is half the mm.
      In otherwords my 25mm lens sees the same image as a 50mm lens on a full frame camera.

      As far as I'm aware, Poly doesn't own a phone. I think her lack of thumbs slows her down a bit when it comes for typing 😉
