- It's been incredible to see Domi and JD Beck at Casa del Jazz in Rome, in June 2023. It's been the first time in Rome for them. Unexpectedly they played also this cover of "Flim" by Aphex Twin. Before playing it, Domi said that Aphex Twin has been one of their major influences over the past years.
They're both so absurdly fucking talented it blows my mind

Favorite Aphex Twin track... It's beyond difficult to play both the lead and bass notes thru finger picking. I kept thinking how people get incredibly good at what they do, and that is repetition and hard work. Almost got it down.

We both appreciate the opportunity to see this and we all know how annoying it is to have a screen right in front of us in a special moment throughout a performance…. Sometime I wish this video did not exist as much as I enjoyed it. Such is the duality of life, awesome and shitty all at the same time.

@@deliabradburyI mean, there is theory behind every music and considering how complex a lot of his music is, there is a lot of theory behind. However, I'm not sure he himself applies all of this theory in a completely conscious way. I'm guessing he composes it by just making it sound good to his ears but, ultimately, it doesn't really matter. The end result is still complex theory.

Seen unschooled musicians write polymeter and stuff and then I would explain what they did and theyd say something like "i felt clever writing it but had no idea".😊
This is fucking INSANE. The drumming is obvious, but she's also knocking out those sub bass accents by foot alongside the keys. Incredible stuff.
Honestly, I think Domi doesn’t get enough credit. A lot of her solos are so chic corea inspired.

@@plexus Hard disagree. Richard composed this song in the same meticulous, note-for-note way as a classical composer- he just used a sequencer vs pen and paper. It would not be a waste of time to play it note by note if that was the goal... I'd argue it would be an excellent recital piece.
With that said, these 2 are obviously treating it as a cover, with their own jazzy bridge, so it's all good

I mean it'd be a waste of time case they're not at some recital or trying to be accepted into conservatory. they're an original musical act that writes their own music and are trying to be successful. They have way more shit to do on their plate then to spend weeks memorizing something like the fucking idm drum patterns of an Aphex song. It's not their song. They're not recording it. They're not releasing it. It's a fun little cover by a band for the music lovers in the crowd that have been influenced by the type of music that inspire them. It'd be a huge waste of time for them. You think anyone in that crowd is going to be so versed in flim that they're gonna it would make any difference to their audiences? Or just to appease the 10 elitist music needs on the internet who are going to she a shifty cellphone video of the performance and actually think the way you do? I'm sorry dude... they have interviews to get to, video shoots, ,touring, they gotta write a new material, they gotta still be kids and enjoy their success. But it's not a waste of time to.... memorize..... aphex drums.... note.... for... note... ur dumb.
Also I'm a musician and an electronic musician at that, I program crazy drums all day. And im ibflyenced by a lot of IDM so i do a lot of aphex style drum work.... And I can just tell you now that you trying to compare that to freaking classical composing just shows you literally know nothing about music at all. And I mean at... all... Like, nuclear face-palm level of dumb. Amazing intricate, awesome drums for sure... but actually an insane comparison. Get over youself. Like actually.

I discovered Aphex Twin back in 1996 when the Richard D James album came out. It was the music I'd been looking for my whole life. Come to Daddy came out in 97 (Flim track 2), and ever since Flim has been my favourite song. It's as light as a cloud, yet as deep as an ocean. It's great to see that it countinues to inspire people.
I feel you. Not gonna say it's what I was looking for, but art that initially confuses me piques my interest. I felt a similar way about Aqua Teen Hunger Force and P.T. Anderson's post-Magnolia movies.
i freaking love the synthesizer on that song. Some other artists I love tycho and Division Street i think draw inspiration from that sound. i love aphex twin
What a treat. Almost got me in tears. Aphex Twin and the whole UK electronica wave from the late nineties has been basically the soundtrack of my life. To see that some of my favorite artists of the moment share this passion is kinda great. Now if they could sneak in a Squarepusher cover my devotion would be complete!

I always loved his drumming but I did feel it was a little lacking compared to Domi back in the Nord live days. Don't feel that way at all anymore.
He’s an amazingly skilled drummer, and insanely technical, but sometimes leaves me a little cold compared to my favorite drummers. Like what he play’s is awesome, but it doesn’t slap in that really visceral way for me, where I uncontrollably dance and make a stank face because the groove is that sick. He’s so young though, that I’m sure he’s still constantly improving

@@VVERNMUSIC I didn't mean to imply Phil got injured. He corrected his posture about halfway through Radiohead's career so far to prevent injury. He used to also hang himself over the snare drum.

Yeah great performance but could have at least stayed in the same scale as the song. Drummer did a great job but a little nitpick is I wish he stayed a bit more faithful to the original as well.
Haven't heard this track in years. Was always a highlight for me when I used to listen to that Aphex Twin album.
