Do you call for reservations as your planning or when your on the road? How can you be flexible if you have to be at a certain campsite on a certain day.?

I think you made this a while back so I have a couple questions:
    1. Are you able to still use this method since covid?
    2. How do you stay flexible with your plans if you have to book months in advance? In other words if you book all your spots in advance, what do you do if they close things down because of covid or something? Doesnt it throw the timing off for your whole planned trip?
I say that because we took a month long trip to the northeast but I booked all places to stay in advance. We felt like we were always staying on a timeline to get to the next destination and therefore were not able to be as spontaneous as we would have liked to be. Of coarse you never know in advance how much you will like each spot but because the reservations are already set then you have to stay on a plan. Lol I guess I want my cake and eat it too. Thank you.

Never trust any traveler with a perfectly folded map! I always start my planning with a recent Rand McNally road atlas (very cheap at Wal-Mart). I like picking up sightseeing resources along the way, such as brochures and stuff at state welcome centers, local events magazines in lodging offices or lobbies, and local papers. I used to just drive (in cars) until I got too tired to continue, which once resulted in a 27-hour drive (with lots of coffee but no rest breaks) from central Texas to California in 2002. The older I got, the dumber that strategy became! I instituted a hard 12-hour limit in 2005 for solo driving and modified it to a daylight-only rule (driving at night makes it hard to dodge critters and debris). I'll probably stick to that after buying an RV but be more willing to call it an early day as I'll have my lodging with me. "A man's got to know his limitations."

The yarn is a great idea. I plan our trips initially using the maps like you do, but was using Mapquest to find distance and travel time between stops. My IPad is a great help when planning at home, but we keep a Good Sam Campground Directory, maps and an atlas with us in the event we need to find an RV park and do not have any type of internet connection. For many of the more popular sites, reservations are a necessity, but some RV parks are not flexible or understanding if your plans change due to an accident or breakdown, which has happened to us on two occasions. Luckily we have only lost about $300.00 in cancellation fees. Thank you for sharing. Always enjoy your videos. Safe travels!!

The best way to plan is always the old school way “paper maps “ I always like to buy state recreational maps” cause it has all the nook n crannies of all the places and things you can do that are not listed in a regular map. But having a US map is handy too, cause once I visit a location I like to use a highlighter to map out the routes that I have taken and would like to revisit, plus state maps don’t take up a lot of room. Upon figuring out distance I like to use google maps in advance, my practice is to write down in a notebook or in OneNote, the points of where I am driving to with it’s time and distance, but when your out the there with no internet service the string thingy works too. I’ve also adopted a 3-5hr rule when vacationing “mind you I’m the only driver, when there’s 2 people its easier” 1st) if the drive is 5hrs or less to your destination Great!!! But if it’s more than 5 hrs you have to factor in, staying in an area in between (Example:Driving from Las Vegas to Moab 7hr trip (just one driver) we had to stay in Salina UT overnite). Once I am in my destination, all of the planned sightseeing adventures must be within 1-3hr drive time limit “going there & driving back” I try not to drive at nite due to animal activity and kooky drivers! And definitely one can never have enough travel books, however space is a minimum in an RV so the map and state books Mike & Jennifer use, are a great resourse to start with! Happy Camping!!!
