I comment on Odysee videos but always got the impression that most creators never look at their channels on that site and understandably only really use it as a backup a majority of the time. If you're telling me that you actually look at your Odysee comments that gives me more confidence in whether or not it's a real solution to the TH-cam problem.
Well it's hard to blame them. Time is money and the reality of the situation is that there's much more money on youtube. I hope odysee can figure out ways to make their platform sustainable for full time content creators soon cuz that'll be huge for its mainstream potential 🤞
@@TheJbh147 Truth is you can get more income in TH-cam & it easier to use in TH-cam than other platform.
@@BoopBobBeep but let's not forget. TH-cam didn't have full time creators in its infancy. Granted, being acquired by google was huge, but that certainly doesn't make it a necessity, imo.
You can comment for/with other users, not only creator, he or she provided video already
@@TheJbh147 Yeah, the average creator being able to make money didn't really happen until about 2010 with the "partner" program. Before that monetization was locked away behind elite "Director" accounts, MCM networks where your slice of the pie wasn't worth the effort/cost, and early versions of "priority" corporate accounts like VEVO.
I'm super happy you're posting on Odysee. I have been afraid that Odysee was just going to become am echo chamber for non-kosher political opinions. We need more types of content to move over too.
Love how the open source community has embraced Odysee.
Lol Bitchute is 100x worse for the non-kosher shit.
I really enjoy posting music there. There's a lot of opportunity for smaller creators right now.
Thing is that ALL of these services are ESSENTIALLY THE SAME! They're simply video hosting services... So whatever 'kind' of site they become just depends on what 'users' they attract...
I always find it funny when people say Twitter is bad, but Instagram is better, or whatever. When basically both services are the SAME, and they just allow people to post comments or video content that they then make avaialbe to stream worldwide... So how is Twitter any better thatn TH-cam? I guess Twitter just attracts more 'opinionated' people who tend to post comments that more people find upsetting?
"It's not the band I hate, it's their FANS!" - Sloan
@@StreetPreacherr oh so you think platform owners don't have specific directions in which they are developing their communities?
I think Odysee has a pretty good shot at taking a chunk of the TH-cam pie. They still have much of the basic features to implement, but it is already slicker than other alternatives.
The best part is, even if it goes the way of youtube, its decentralized, so somebody could easily make a new platform with the same videos, allowing for actual competition!
I'm constantly looking for alternatives to google. Didn't know the names Odysse or Lybr till now. Can't wait to see what's in there.
It's kinda small right now, there's a bit of original content (but idk how much), and there are also a lot of channels talking about China, covid, some conspiracy theorists and so on. I think Louis explained why the platform attracted them first pretty well. I'm not trying to discourage you from checking it out, bc I'd love to see some alternatives to YT, just telling you some of the downsides
@@alexpaw3493 I never look at the home page or recommended videos on Odysee, for those exact reasons. I only watch content from channels I'm subscribed to.
Veritasium is on there. Hardware Unboxed and Louis too!
@@sherlockmaverick Most of the channels I follow is on there since quite a while. I mostly still miss music videos and DIY content, so I'm starting an LBRY channel about DIY stuff this spring.
Its one service just 2 names
"i cant believe you use the same platform as [bad person]"
wow, i can't believe you live in the same country as [bad person]
does that sound like a reasonable statement? no? then why does the other one sound reasonable?
💯
Guilt by association is the dumbest thing ever.
You could choose platform but not the country you are born in
because you deliberately choose to appeal to the audience that watches those bad people.
Because you have way more freedom to choose the platform you use than choosing the country you live.
I guess people have now gotten used to being in echo chambers where they can just keep re-enforcing their beliefs?
Yes, and the more “woke among society” have become increasingly fragile and feckless little critters.
So, not only do you have people stuck in their echo chambers; but many of them have their fingers stuck in their ears too.
The ones that put their lives on the line by hearing an alternate point of view, or read a comment that upsets them, run the risk of severe social shock (SSS for short), and Internet death.
It seems that we’ve become magnets for minute details, of other people’s lives over the last 10 years.
People are upset at other people about things that will never have an affect on them.
Society has been trained into this dysfunctional behavior. It can be trained out, but only if we start allowing ideas to flow once again, and conduct this in a civilized fashion.
I can't remember how many places I've left just because, well I genuinely didn't like them. These days I'm only really on TH-cam for the lols in the comments from stupid people. There are like 5 youtubers that I follow and are too set in their way to have an automated upload to Odyssey/Lbry or BitChute. If one of them did that, I'd yeet this account for good.
a version of TH-cam where there is nothing watch but political schizophrenics and crypto scammers is not so appealing. More normal people are posting on there now but there is still a long ways to go on that end.
@@novarem9828
Yes, but it’s a chicken/egg situation.
Gotta get content creators on the platform to get an audience.
Gotta have an audience for the creators once they arrive on alternate platforms.
This isn’t about the convenience of a better app, or UI, etc.
The focus should be about shifting power away from monopolies like Alphabet, et al, and towards newer platforms that represent freedom.
Once all of the best creators have gone over to Odysee, ultimately along with their fan base, the servers will start getting tested, and load balancing and adding new VMs or Kubernetes allocations etc.
When creators and fans are there, Odysee will have the motivation and hopefully funding to keep expanding their tech, which will be a raising tide for all ships.
If we build it, they will come.
are you new to being human?
They're actually saying "I want MY KIND of censorship."
Is competition a bad thing?
to be fair 100% freedom cant work. nazis pedos etc should not have a platform to defend shit like that.
unironically yes, we all want a platform that aligns with our values. i'm more lax, i'll allow my enemies to post anything that doesn't breach safety rules, but i will obviously want more moderation of them than my friends, if my friends make an edgy joke at their expense, i'll treat that with less vigor than rightwingers making jokes about killing or evicting trans people.
call me woke or whatever. i will protect the people i care about first, and then protect free speech. my enemies would do the same.
Free-speech should always be a right until you use your free-speech to interfere with someone else's freedom.@@xymaryai8283
The hardest thing for me in switching platforms is that all the normal people I watch on youtube mostly aren't there. I know I can find some of their content on other platforms, but while youtube still carries the mass of content it is difficult to definitively switch. It's gotten a lot better than it was a year ago; promising future for new tech
Over time more and more people will move their content over. There's actually a lot of innovation happening in the LBRY space for tech enthusiasts.
How about you just re-upload their stuff there & credit them
Dave Jones, Big clive, Louis, Great Scott, Electroboom, Julian, VWestlife are over there. All good uncontroversial content. Give it a chance and it will help better the ratio of controversial/uncontroversial content
Electroboom makes my life better, not even a second though
The sheer amount of "uncontroversial content" on Odysee is beyond measure..
Just visit the homepage without being logged in.. A whole bunch of regular stuff, of every flavor, like the old TH-cam days.
Veritasium too!
There is also a heap of populist assholes I wish not to see, and unfortunately they do not offer "block this channel" button. They also does not provide rss feeds, I asked for multiple times long before they called it odysee. Don't tell me that one extra line of code is too much to demand.
@JacksonChen666 ok, I found the rss, they had to add it since the last time. How about blocking channels I don't want to see on my home screen again?
preach it brother
When two of your favourite content creators exist together with the one comments section 👍
Oh are you on Odysee as well? Tbh I used to make this excuse about alternative platforms as well, that I don't like the front page and there's probably no one interesting on there. But since joining a few months ago I'm realizing there's so many people on there that I already watch, and plenty of channels from every perspective.
The site is surprisingly usable too, but it still needs 4K and next-gen codec (H265/VP9/AV1) support (I tested each, my uploads went up but the page freezes when you try to play it, lol), as well as a resolution selector that actually isn't broken. Also needs an app for Android, though I hear there's a (buggy) LBRY app.
You guys are brothers??? Explains so much...
I love odysee but i would love to see its performance improved on mobile devices though, Despite this - it's a very promising platform and I agree with Louis on his points he raised.
I agree. The iOS app for Odysee is currently full of bugs, poor performance, and incomplete functionality, but I'm sure the developers are doing their best to improve it over time.
@@InventorZahran i'm not too familiar with mobile devices but if the app is full of bugs can't you just turn a webpage into a "app"? make a launcher for the website or something.
Here's the thing, when using the LBRY protocol on platforms like Odysee, you enter the realm of decentralization and open source, and you're no longer subject to the whims of corporate developers, and you are no longer a product being sold by Google to corporations and governments in exchange for "free" shit.
What you need to understand is that it's NOT a service bring sold to you upon which you can make requests and demands. YOU are actually in charge and YOU are responsible for it's features of and performance. This means YOU have to report problems, YOU have to do the programming or else help support those who can. YOU have to post content, original or not, and YOU have every opportunity to earn crypto by re-uploading video content you like and want from other platforms, onto LBRY.
YOU CAN'T complain if YOU did nothing to help the situation.
Simple as that! 🤗
@@calysagora3615 You can't tout Lbry as an alternative to TH-cam if Lbry is not an alternative to TH-cam. Simple as that.
Open source or not, if it doesn't work for people then it doesn't work for people.
@@strangejune It works just fine. You do understand that TH-cam is also based on user created content, right? It's clearly utterly dysfunctional and severely twisted, and does in fact not work for many people.
Screw-You-Tube simply had a few years to accumulate content and users, and it will take ANY platform time to catch up. It's super easy to transfer all videos from a TH-cam account to LBRY in a few clicks.
The there is this little detail of logic that you might have missed; they're not mutually exclusive.
MOST channels I follow are now on LBRY, some who aren't are on other independent platforms like Bitchute and newtube, some on other like TH-cam, vimeo and Dailymotion. TH-cam clearly being the worst, but with a few stubborn music and DIY channels that has yet to move elsewhere. I'm confident they will. Many creators also makes way more income using LBRY.
You’re right louis and we need more normal folks branching
There are some really good parts on Odysee, you have to search a little bit, but you can find some content you otherwise never would have under TH-cam.
Short, concise, coherent. Thank you.
I got onto odysee because of you, I watched for a few days, then I checked into YT and some creators here. I am ashamed to state that I completely forgot about LBRY until this video. I want this platform to succeed, but there aren't a ton of creators on there, and I admit I am part of the issue. I am not supporting odysee as much as I should.
Odysee has an edge for having some fresh content being published to it. However, I really do enjoy watching old archival material, which is non-existent on the platform. Although Odyssee is not my go-to for content because it has not amassed enough "everything else" shit which falls outside the purview of most content creators (like random cat videos), I might as well download the videos off TH-cam and republish them there myself (when I believe they are in public domain) in order to help the platform amass the "everything else" shit it needs rather than complain about it.
So you have a massive opportunity to repost content you like to LBRY and earn crypto doing it!
Just do it. There will come a time when even this old archival material becomes problematic for TH-cam (old movies/music that contain "stereotypes" etc.). So preserving it right now is a great idea either way.
greetings from germany :-)
This is exactly what I've been doing, backing up stuff I need from TH-cam onto Odysee so I no longer (or rarely) have to come here to get what I need.
Yes Louis, good point. We will never have serious competitors to TH-cam if we don't even give them a chance.
Nobody really wants free speech.
Most people like censorship, as long as it is tailored to their preferences.
When your favorite opinion is being censored, it is all about "give me mah first amendment rights, aaaagh!", but when an opinion you hate gets the same treatment, it is suddenly " is a private company and the first amendment only applies to the government!".
Worst of it is, people fail to realize these companies could flip on them at any moment, because they are not even customers, they are the product, and the companies don't care about morals or social groups, they care about the bottom line (as a business should).
People will get what they deserve but so many will be confused and lost when that day finally comes. No lesson will be learnt and being able to say "I told you so" won't make anyone happy.
Thank you for your videos as always.
Spot on. Don't get discouraged. We love and appreciate your work. Thank you.
Bang on. I'm tired of content creators that complain about this site and then refuse to post on Odysee.
Louis once again showing us that he is a man of integrity. Respect.
Loved your comment on the removal of the dislike button. They said there were other platforms that had the button, so I told them thanks I will check them out.
The videos straight up don’t load for me because content creators choose to only upload a 1080p video and it just completely fails to download on a rural network connection. This effectively censors the site when I’m not on high speed internet. I’m glad people are supporting it so that some day they can sort out stuff like this. I’ll use it as soon it works for my available network speed.
It's not just your connection. Their own network is shoddy, My connection is 50/15 on average, typically 20ms ping to US servers with 0ms jitter. I can play 8K videos on YT no issue, but always seem to have issues playing any video on Odysee (except their help videos for some reason). The quality drops down to 144p or just buffers eternally. No idea why but it's consistently unwatchable for me.
@@_BangDroid_ I wonder how much regional caching will be necessary to solve this like what Netflix and TH-cam do. Hopefully not but it seems unlikely there’s a workaround for that.
The only thing keeping me from using LBRY more often than I do is that most creators fail to post there. I happen to be on TH-cam right now and, although I could be watching you on LBRY, I probably couldn't have watched the last 10 things I watched before watching this video on LBRY. It's weird to me that more creators don't post there - by the time you have to worry about people not watching your ads on youtube, you already have an income stream via LBRY...
I second this. I do see more channels currently on YT syncing to odysee be it retail (like me) or even scambaiting, but still no where near all the channels I know of/watch.
there is no income stream there. you have to take the credits off each video manually. let's say i have 2000 videos.click on 2000 videos, go to a menu, and withdraw credits manually. every day? fuck that. unless there's $250k in credits there it is not worth the time to do that.
@@rossmanngroup laziness kind of got me. I had YT, odysee, bitchute and then spotify because Rogan is there, it takes effort to go through them. I was thinking of making something for myself to get it all in one place, maybe scrape all of them and get as RSS feed, not sure. But the point is having all on one platform is very convenient and is not that easy to break out of.
@@rossmanngroup I did not know that it was so inconvenient - sounds like a silly technical problem though. LBRY - if any of your devs are reading this, could you make it easier to extract monetization automatically / with reduced user interaction?
Lots of opportunity at LBRY and Odysee. Can't say the same for TH-cam.
Kinda proves the point when I have seen all of your posts this month in my feed except for this video. This video did not get put into my feed at all, I went into your profile looking for a different video I watched and found this one while scrolling the list.
I went to Odysee and saw nothing objectionable at all on their homepage, it was videos of guinea pigs, Minecraft and vlogs
Those are my guinea pigs 😁
But Louis, we can't let those other people talk freely, they're wrong.
@@russ254 But what if freedom allows bad actors to creep in? At what point can you stop them from acting? One doesn't need to look too far in modern society of non violent actors actively undermining or destroying the integrity of society, currency, military, politics, etc. All non-violent and "free"... but also, bad for people living under its effects.
@@thestig007 Exactly what Medieval Europe did to bad actors, kick them out/kill them.

@@thestig007 who gets to decide whom is a "bad actor?"
This is entirely subjective.
I suspect the best possible solution is to simply agree to the degree that is possible and learn to live with the rest. You'll never have the society you want, however you won't have to live with the society the other guy wants either. One should neither administer nor receive a beatdown except under the most extreme circumstances.
Incredibly well-spoken take on bias affirmation.
Glad you made this video. I joined yesterday, and it's hard what to make of the website.
Thank you for sharing your rants.
Only reason I don't like odyssey is that videos rarely load for me, and if they do, they buffer constantly, or just kill the videos halfway. It's just unusable to me in this state...
If that gets fixed, I'll switch over in no time. But being able to watch a video, is the no 1 most important feature of a video hosting site, that just needs to work.
it's true. often when on some other definitely safe for all the family video sites, it is frustrating how different, proprietary video players never seem to work properly, as smoothly and responsively as youtube does.
What are you using it from? It works just fine on my galaxy s20. Maybe feedback logs would help them clear stuff up. I also helped do an informal little stress test with ~5k people trying to watch a specific stream. Video worked and chat was loading just fine.
Give it another shot at some point! It's a really great group working on it and still free of influence from big money (cough cough rumble)
@@TheJbh147
Yes, and speaking of Dave, Rumble, and Locals...
Wanna take a guess at who is brokering the merger and formation of this new company?
A Cantor Fitzgerald spin-off.
Keeping an eye on this one.
I have the same problem if i use a slow internet. I think this is because odysee doesnt seem to have transcoding so you cant lower the video resolution if your internet cant keep up.
It disappoints me that every time I try to use Odysee properly, it still has all of the same problems it had in 2020. It doesn't seem like there's been much progress. I'd love to use it full time, but it's not a great experience compared to TH-cam.
I'm going to check out odysee, haven't heard of that one.
We have a channel there.. Orbital News UK
It's pretty cool. It's also a crypto project by the LBRY foundation which adds a layer of innovation to the whole thing
UI improved over LBRY for sure.
There's some cool content on there. The project really is in it's infancy and I see it growing significantly soon.
Thanks for that hint - I didn't know you had an odysee channel too - subscribed!
This is a great lesson for people to learn. Restaurants and Stores go out of businesses all the time because they have limited themselves on who their suppliers are for their products.
I think I watch half the videos I watch from you on LBRY. I like it, their phone app is a bit buggy so I don't use it while I'm out and about, but when I'm at home I'll use it.
Thank you for supporting lbry and odysee.
I've known about LBRY for a while, but only found out about Odysee about a week ago: through one of my favourite Linux / Open Source channels [DistroTube]. I'm quite impressed with the Odysee implementation so far, and see it's long overdue that a credible open alternative to TH-cam take market share. I'll certainly be finding you on the platform!
I love that this was short but still very helpful. I'm a small channel so I'm looking forward to bringing my content to Odysee and seeing how it does!
Yas, be the change you want to see.
They want the Google eco system without censorship which is impossible without more people using/support it.
And without the creators of those platforms ending up caving to censorship or used free speech as a grift and never supported that in the first place.
Greetings Louis. I’m a member of Odysee and a follower of your videos there. 👍
I honestly didn't know about these two things and I would definitely start using it now because im tired of trying to block all youtube bullshit from tracking to trying to create a box for me on what to watch
The only thing that irritates me about Odysee is videos having to stop to buffer often. Some videos autoscale playback quality based on speed while others don't, and I have no clue why... If it would buffer the whole video before playing that would be better. At least you can download it on the Lbry app. I watched this video first on Lbry, BTW :)
I do think it will get better over time as more people start using/migrating to the new platform. Also the bigger it gets, the more competitive it is for developers to want to work there.
That's never happened to me and I only have crummy 2017 macbook pro. Could it be some hardware on your end that isn't working properly?
I didn't know you posted your videos on Odyssey, I'm going to watch you there then!
I like the service. No issues here.
It has too many bugs, everything else it better than youtube. I mean no ads and even the viewers earn something from there.
TH-cam is better when it comes to changing video resolutions, miniplayer, theater mode, creating playlists.. etc.
In the past I've disliked lbry because the windows and android players were much more buggy than TH-cam. I want them to do better and maybe it's time for me to give them another try.
Thanks you for informing me of the existence of these platforms. Not that i truly need them but its good to know :)
My only big issue with odysee is not even half the people I regularly watch are on it, of course that isn't the platform's fault, but I find it harder to switch platforms if I have go back and forth between them, although youtube has been making a better case for it lately, as I've been experiencing my comments being deleted too, I rarely post anything too controversial, but even something as minor as using a swear will get my comments removed.
Wild how people get comfy with algorithmic content editorializing (sometimes a.k.a. "filter bubble").
Level of personalization of the algorithm is absolutely crazy and somewhat creepy. For example I recently noticed something strange: search function in YT is completely broken for me!
Whenever I search for a term only first dozen results are related in any way and almost all following have NOTHING to do in any way with my query.
My search on "electricity bills" for example turned out far more music videos(of songs I recently watched) or new publications from channels I watch some times than anything to do with electricity.
Now I figured out it's an example of `smart` system not having any granular control (for end user) and being too elastic.
I often watch/listen to youtube in background, mostly music and sometimes some lighter content if I don't need to concentrate that much. I start this by searching for a term I'm interested in and let algorithm propose vids that I may like. I generally don't care if it's very accurate result.
Fast forward to now: algorithm is convinced that to keep my attention, when I type in "how to tie a knot" it should show me customs of ancient Sparta, something about macadamia nuts and a complete music playlist based around that one earworm song.
What I don't understand most of all is why people act like you can't use both or other alternatives simultaneously.
Saw this on Odyssey, but came here to drop this comment. What I do is I use TH-cam for entertainment & for the few content creators who are never really at risk of demonization/censorship that I watch, & I use Odyssey for all informational content.
I use both, but try using Odysee/LBRY when given the chance.
The only problem with the alt platforms is that its overwhelmingly political or current events content and not just normal stuff like DIY, games or the chill stuff. Glad you are contributing to them to help remediate that issue.
So ?
You are so right, if you want to not be affected by cencorship the line in the sand must be so far away from you that you are really uncomfortable with what's on that line and the vest solution is for the line to not be there at all
You talk a lot of sense. I agree with you. I have been with TH-cam since end of 2006, and while I absolutely love TH-cam, I have seen it takes away freedom from people. Watching new channels start-up is painful to watch, as they get no promotion whatsoever. Sometimes, companies forget...not everyone has a ton of money lying around for advertising. Doesn't make their content any less valid.
It's a pretty decent platform.
I wholly agree.
Well said. Appreciate this perspective
The thing i hate about odysse is buffering and video quality issues
Odysee is great, love to see that you're on there. I'll watch you there from now on. Thanks for sharing
My problem with odyssy is the momentum I have in youtube - the feed, the videos I have off lined, etc...
Ultimately I could just switch, but I'm to lazy to switch.. UNLESS some is my favorite creators started putting the second half of their videos on odyssy...
You wouldn't have this problem without copyright. You'd go to the front page of Odyssy and you'd see reuploads of the most popular youtube creators that weren't willing to reupload their stuff to odyssey
I hate the DMCA as much as the next degenerate but nah it's natural monopolies mostly generating this effect. Let's see how hard it takes for Google to screw this one up.
i just went to the home page and I do not see this. There are a lot of youtube creators that use Odysees automated content mirroring to automatically reupload their youtube channel to Odysee, thats what I do
@@Dataanti That is a useful feature that I didn't know existed. But I see like, 1 shadversity video and that's it.
Relying on each creator to reupload will never be as reliable as letting anyone reupload anything when they think there is demand for it.
As much as dmca annoys the crap out of me sometimes, to be fair, it is an important law to have to protect people's property online. As the other guy said, though, the guys at lbry foundation understand this and have tried to make it as easy as possible for creators to upload to both sites simultaneously. Good things take time. TH-cam has been around for a loooong time so it's easy to forget that it was once where odysee is now
@@TheJbh147 intellectual property is a creation of government. it has no basis in reality just the violence of government behind it. it's a horrible thing for human development even though the excuse for having it is to promote it, but like anything with government what they say something does does the exact opposite.
I mostly use it to find specific content that’s usually blocked or censored by TH-cam, but maybe I should take it more seriously 🤔
I'm actually with you on this one
Even bought the GrayJay app, yes we had our disagreements, but doesn't mean I can't support a good cause
One issue though, your app isn't EXACTLY open source, it's "source available"
There's apparently a strict definition for open source app
Man, I'm just pissed it failed to sync my channel. I'm not really a content creator but that still bums me out.
I’m sure support could help you out
I started telling Google to stop showing me all content from sites that I find tell me how to think and doesn't just tell me the facts and let me make my own opinion. Or when I click an article to realize the title was clickbait. I wish it had the option to not show content from that writer and editor instead of the whole site but I don't have that option so I figure the site lets them get away it with so I block the entire site. I don't want to support that kind of stuff. I know looking at it makes things worse.
Glad you're starting to post on Odysee. Starting to get tired of TH-cam's shenanigans so I started uploading my personal videos there.
I like Odysee and check it once in a while. I think the issue is that most people are on youtube so I go there more. People are going to go where the content is at.
WOW, I litterally got into Odysee today and was wondering if you had an account. Guess I 'll go there.
On that note, Veritasium and Hardware unboxed are there too!
The Odysee homepage recommended videos looks like TH-cam's about 10 years ago
I've been bad about this, I'll admit. But I finally followed you on Odysee this week. And I'm making a commitment right now to watch your videos there first, before opening the TH-cam app.
Thanks for the kick in the pants!
I had the same experience when telling people about Linux.
there was a strange convergence with linux/open source, politically and that was fairly well split left and right, because on the scene, there were both left-leaning academics, and right-leaning business entrepreneurs. There were promoters of Open Source like Eric Raymond, people who supported gun rights and marijuana legalization. In particular Mr Raymond upset people on both the left and right. lol I remember him finishing an Open Source talk at MIT with promotion of 2nd Amendment rights, which he saw as all part of the same continuum of being able to protect oneself and one's rights, literally and via software.
Mostly what I see no on Odyssey and other TH-cam alternatives, is right-wing political speech and not a balance.
I'm perfectly fine here on TH-cam, rather than going to odysee. Like a few others have already pointed out, the site doesn't work. Too many problems with buffering or not loading. Not worth the effort.
Besides, if a platform like odysee were to survive long enough to 1, work and 2, actually be taken seriously, it'd start having the exact same problems as TH-cam. Content ID shows up because of big corporations wanting something done about their copyrighted content being distributed illegally. Dislikes go away because corporations don't like being ratio'd. Certain uploaders go away, or get demonitized, because advertisers don't like having their ads run against that kind of content. And TH-cam had better capitulate to the big corporations, or the big corporations will pull their advertising and TH-cam goes under. Look at Twitch, we're watching it happen in real time over there. Twitch used to be the "haven" where you could do what you want. Use whatever music you want. Then the corporations took notice and wanted it to stop, and Twitch ended up implementing copyright systems that were worse than what TH-cam was doing.
I see a lot of comments already talking about solving the "TH-cam problem". I believe these people are missing the big picture. There is no "TH-cam problem". There's a "massive corporations problem." There is no version of this where odysee eventually rivals TH-cam in size but doesn't also have all of TH-cam's problems. If odysee didn't start trying to manage copyrighted content and "advertiser unfriendly" content and such things, they'd go out of business from all the lawsuits and lack of income due to a lack of advertisers. And if they do capitulate to stay alive, then they'll turn to algorithms and AI and the like to help out because there's too much stuff uploaded every day to manage it via human oversight. So it'll be the same broken mess as TH-cam.
I certainly don't like the way TH-cam handles everything, but I'm also not naïve enough to believe the problem goes away by switching to a worse platform that eventually grows into something better. What's that line from The Dark Knight? You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. That's odysee. Except they might just also die before they even get far enough to hit one of those two endings.
This should be near the top of the comment section
I agree with what you've said and have been thinking along these lines for a while. Perhaps there's some kind of underlying natural law at play here, not just relegated to online communities either. The bigger and more diverse a group or community becomes, the more rules are needed to govern it and the more disconnected leadership is from the culture. TH-cam leadership is astronomically disconnected from the culture and community but make radical changes informed by this disconnect and consistently fail to address the needs of creators and users and create more problems. However, there was a time almost forgotten now, where this was not the case and everyone loved TH-cam, growth was tremendous and the platform was the next best thing, and the leadership were in tune with the needs of the userbase. You can see similar things with big government and society, and to abstract further, globalisation.
One difference I'd like to point out though that should be considered is, advertising is at the core of TH-cam's business model, whereas with Odysee I don't believe it plays much of a role at all. This may or may not change but at the moment advertiser influence is practically non-existent on Odysee, as far as I can tell.
Once you find and follow enough channels on Odysee the top part of the page will just be those channels videos (and you never need to scroll down and see the weird/conspiracy stuff on Odysee). Also, you can click the three dots, block the channel, and you’ll never see it again (I did this with all the horror flick channels in the Movie section and now whenever I scroll past the movie section its just 1920-1930 public domain movies)
I started posting there. Its awesome platform.
This doesn't work.odysee has no way to close a video or even a video to show how to use in.
Such honest truth, love your content exactly because of this.
I love Odysee. Did not know you were on it. Thanks for the heads up.
It's a great platform.
Good points. I am one of those people you are ranting about. I'll try to use odysee more, instead of TH-cam.
Agreed 100%
Thanks for saying what i've been thinking.
As time progresses, Odysee and LBRY will improve their interface and gain popularity, without such fickle censorship. TH-cam was very much like this in its early days.
Rumble seems like a better video platform going forward. They seem like they have the most potential. And they're going public as a company (CFVI).
Yes!
I am so glad that you're saying this, because I'm sick of hearing it myself. I run instances on the fediverse. One soapbox instance, and one peertube instance, and one lotide instance. They're all completely libre notwithstanding spam or illegal content. I see stuff I disagree with all the time. On the other hand, I see stuff that I agree with that I'm not allowed to see on big tech just as often or more often. My sites aren't monetized, and they're run off of parts scavenged from roadside signs so I don't need to worry about my hosting being taken down, and I don't need to worry about advertisers getting upset because I don't have any. The result is like the internet was before big Tech decided that they needed to micromanage everything that we see. You'd see things that you disagree with, and things that you agree with, and you had to be an adult about it.
I don't have much a problem with Odysse, I just haven't been in the mood to start using it yet, is outside my comfort zone,
but that mood is slowly growing into the correct one.
My only complaint about Odysse is it can't, and may never match the vastness of TH-cams content and may never match it...
We can damn well try though.
That's the core of the problem with starting social media websites, you need people to generate more people. I hope Odysee picks up more traffic because YT is starting to reach the breaking point for a lot of people.
The thing I am most confused about with Odysee is their ToS states they are not able to delete or remove content published on the platform, but they have removed a lot of content on legitimate DMCA grounds, as a more benign example. Why do they make these false claims? How do they handle other violations of their ToS like discretionarily "objectionable" content or other unlawful content? How does the Report system actually work if content "can't be removed"?
my problem with these other problems is just the lack of content, until youtube finally gets put out of its misery there wont be an alternative
Odyssey is nice, but I like the Carrack, too.
Biggest issue I have with Odysee/lbry (and someone please chime in if I have missed something) is that I can't play back videos at 144p like I do with TH-cam to save data.
This reminds me of the controversy surrounding Classic Game Room, when Mark tried to move his channel to Daily Motion (10 years ago, maybe?). People complained that it wasn't easy, since they had all of their favorite creators in one place, and it was too much of a "hassle" to use a different platform. I hate to say this, but I think if people are too lazy to click on another website or download another app, then people deserve this monopolistic garbage we are seeing right now.
In fairness, DM was garbage back then, and even to this day, I think it still is.
@@arnox4554 It wasn't perfect, but the app was better than the website for some odd reason. Anyway, if someone wants to support a creator and oppose the monopolistic behemoth, give the alternatives a chance.
never heard of this before. Going to try it out.
You can actually block creators from ever appearing on the front page or search results (for you), can't do that on youtube!
You can?!? how?
TH-cam can be absolutely insane in what they won't allow to be posted though. I write a comment with no swear words, no discussion of wars or politics or pandemics and it might not post because it has one random word that their bot doesn't like which is nevertheless key to the sentence.
I follow you on there. It reminds me of TH-cam before it got bought out
I'm all for new, supposedly better platforms, but I need an incentive to go there. And since I don't watch right wing commentators or softcore porn or whoever else gets censored off of YT, the existence of a creator ain't it. It's gotta be:
- better performance
- higher quality
- a better interface
- cheaper (if applicable)
- etc.
just "being in existence" isn't enough to motivate me, because that means ANOTHER account, app, place to go when I just wanna go to the bathroom and put something on... Not something I want to have
I actually didn't know you had an account somewhere else. Thanks.
I started watching Odysee for the Darkhorse podcast when youtube removed one of their important videos from scientists about Covid. The platform looks and works a lot like youtube. I even enjoyed looking at some of the other types of media they support like still photography. As long as they have darkmode so I don't get blasted with white light at night while watching I'm cool with the way their site works. Will look for you over there.
I didn't realize you were on Odysee. Subscribed.
My first experience with odysee was pretty bad - mostly flatearthers, anti vaxxers and conspiracy nuts. It's not about censorship, but just lack of content. Checked it out recently and it's a night and day difference - I definitely recommend people take a look again.
I wish the competitors to TH-cam including LBRY and Odysee acknowledged the concept that videos can be watched beyond a monitor, tablet or mobile device. Millions of people have double monitor set-ups without knowing it - a monitor/tablet/phone and a TV. Trying to cast to TV is messy or requires either a dual monitor setup via HDMI or a second computer.
Tbh after looking at it I'll just sit on the side lines cheering them on until the quality improves and until we get options (either built in or through an extension) to block videos and genres.
Looks pretty good though. I especially like that you can mute channels.
It's a shame that Odysee doesn't have an iPad app. It's a joke to use an iPhone app on a giant iPad as your video player.
