Ain’t it crazy how you learn all these caulking tricks as long as you spend time on job sites? Doesn’t matter what your profession is there’s always someone on-site showing off all his caulking tricks to newer guys
Cut the tube at a 45 degree angle and cut the hole very small. Put the tube at the angle of the cut and caulk down the trim and wall. If gap is too wide on trim cut a bit more off the tube. If you do this you barely have to wipe it and it won't be too heavy and smear everywhere. I'm a painter and have done it this way for 30 years.

In case you will be painting on or around caulk, petroleum jelly is not a good idea, it will ruin your paint work, instead, use a spray soap or foam glass cleaner. Spray right over the caulk and your fingers will not pick up, but smooth the caulk. The residue will not hurt your paint work...

You should always push the nozzle along the joint, not pull it. Just dip your finger in water with fairy liquid to smooth off silicone bead.

Dipping your finger in a mix of water and washing liquid does the same job with virtually no residue

Разве можно так делать? А тем более советовать делать? Я в тихом ужасе!))) Мы тоже так ладошками силикон растирали в середине 90-ых... Сейчас то уже не проблема купить(заказать) шпателей для этого дела (в том же зеленом магазине).
