@@KoaRothman Agree with everything but the leash. Sure, if it’s crowded and/or the waves and beach type (rocky) require it I’m leashed but if it’s beach break and uncrowded I’m unleashing every time.
Also, heaps of Puero Escondido surfers go leashless as they notice they break more boards with a leash.
But, yeah, in the context of surfing Country leashes are pretty much the jam.

San Clemente, CA surfer of 24 years here. This list made me feel warm and fuzzy in my chest cavity it it so universally true. The only "do" I would modify for SoCal is number four the "wear a leash" part which is completely true except to say there are longboarders who specifically have the skill to not need a leash and a leash interferes with walking the board but if you are one of these dudes you already know your one of these and don't have to ask, otherwise just wear a f#@$ing leash.
And the only don't I'd change is number three for obvious applicability. Don't surf Lowers! 😂🤣😅 (same reasons)

Go catch the crumbs, they are better than any waves wherever you are from. i’m not saying always, when and if the crowd is right work yourself out and get a few bombs. So many days there are plenty of waves even for the guys sitting on the corners.

The later grandfather drove Geyhound, then Greyline tours for 37 years out of Rainbow Towers, Hale Koa Hotel area. My Grandma would send me a ticket to visit and surf between '77-'79 Grandpa Stone would take me and my board to work and drop me off at a beach, Sandy Beach, Makaha, Waimea. And pick me up after tour. My Grandma eventual move to the Kapiolani Manor, 12th floor. I could just see Kaisers between the high-rise hotels. Kaisers became my spot. Learned to surf backside there, right into the bowl! I had a 7'6 Skip Frye rounded pin, single box fin.🤙😎

I know that it's kind of covered in 3 or 4 of of the topics but should be talked about. Craft doesn't give you priority. The same rules apply even if you sit in different areas. IE. Longboard vs shortboard, vs bodyboard etc. They all take off in slightly different areas as their craft is suited for different things. That is something that needs to be in your mind esp if you're able to take off earlier than everyone and sit further out (LB) or inside and deeper (boog).

I want to add another DON'T DO to your list. If you come to an open beach break and you see someone sitting on a peak, Don't paddle out to them. Find your own peak to surf try to spread out. Nothing says, "I am a total kook and don't know what I am doing," more than when you paddle up to someone else on a beach break somewhere when the whole beach is open. Happens so often beginners want to paddle right up next to someone else and fuck up their session.

This one is tough... often surfers are drawn to the area where others are catching waves, its natural. Same time, you can work a very good 2-3-4 surfer rotation on sets. What I would say though is... if you see a crew of 2-3-4 rotating and catching waves, dont crash their party. Too many is not cool... but its ok to join a solo session surfer, IMO

Often there's a bank at one spot on a beach which is literally the only place anyone can catch a wave. What's the point in paddling off to a spot where no waves are breaking? Say hi to the guy, be respectful and friendly and don't drop in on him, but the waves will come in sets of 4,5 or more, he can't be on every wave.

haven't been to the north shore in years (not since 2001) but I think one of the issues visiting surfers face is "respect" can be defined differently wherever you go. I had no problems there but I was in good company and easily could've done something wrong without realising it even with many years of surfing experience. I got quite a few grumpy looks surfing some out of the way spots on Oahu. I also had some of the best hospitality ever and was really looked after. I suspect there are spots left in Hawaii where "respect" means "tourists don't surf here" and you may get pounded for just being an outsider. my rules are be low key, no camera, give the locals plenty of space and all the waves they want, resist your urge to paddle for the same waves even if you're just backing them up, be friendly but not too friendly, don't turn up in groups, if you get a chance at a set wave go, don't say shit if you're burnt or dropped in on, don't act like prey haha.

Kudos to start the video with shout out to life guards. Respect is a two way street. Plenty of locals without Aloha drop in on others even on uncrowded peaks. It’s always good to get a feel for the lineup and be respectful but if you’re in position, it’s your wave and no one should drop in on you. Surf with stoke for others and live aloha both in and out of the water.

After having local friends...that were known and sponsored, cleared a lot of hastles and hurdles. Really takes time to earn a spot and respect in the water. No one is perfect and you're bound to drop in on someone...happens...apologize, move on. Jerks everwhere...don't be one!

For wave hog paddle, around you, lowlife MF snakes, stare them right in the eye and turn your head and body towards them. As they paddle around you without saying a thing . Do’s- only buy boards directly from your local shapers, they know what works for the breaks and you’re supporting local businesses
Do’s- Where sunscreen every season, skin cancer is real.
Do’s- wear ear plugs in the winter, surfers ear is real and expensive. (Nor Cal)
Do’s- Teach the groms by example, surfing is a way of life not a sport.
Do’s- go easy on the boogs, they’re fun alternative while recovering from a blownout mcl.
Don’ts- don’t surf to impress women, they don’t care. Surf to have fun.
Don’ts- ride a soft top, have some self respect.
Don’ts- be a poser, if you talk for long enough we know….

I wish beginners understood priority, at all. Far too many beginners in the impact zone trying to catch a reform or the white wash. They just look straight ahead and paddle, never looking right or left. People buy Costco foamers and just paddle out and create chaos. Then, when they get yelled at, they cop an attitude of arrogance or basically don't care! Trophy kids and adults alike. This b.s. is everywhere in and out of the water.

Do you want a ticket?!” Can you even imagine that happening now? Not in Seattle where I live. Somebody would start crying or a lawsuit, LOL.

Sign up ahead of time, entrance fee, week holding period, 1-2 days of surfing, 4-6 man heats. Call it the Pipe Joe.

Another good DO for new spots, spend an about an hour picking up trash off the beach as a warmup. The locals will see it and hook you up with waves most the time. ..Works the same at skate parks too, especially if you bring a broom and sweep.

I got struck by a fair amount of panic and anxiety in France just this month. As an ex skater/nube surfer i was going into some pretty big waves like 5 to 6ft steep waves. I got the hang of popping up and balance is not such a big deal but i can't yet take a direction.. just keep surfing in a straight line. But it was fun eating sh*t and taking one of those waves. But the swell got bigger and it had a huge beach break. Got caught behind the beach break getting sucked into a little over 2m steep walls.... Got spewed out eventually onto a pebble beach..; damaged my board. I remained calm but afterwards i was cringing for 3 days...
Thanks for all the tips.... i think i know my limits now... lol.

So just a friendly but real tip from someone born n raised here..
Even tho i feel for the one getting cracks.. its pretty much like how we grew up in HI.. tough love.. its just really dangerous on NS.

All of the advice is great. I really appreciate #9 and #10 Do's. I have gone on trips with close friends that took a lot of time, effort, and hard earned $$$$ to put together, and once we score a decent wave at least one friend (usually two) are so frothing that they just turn into these wave hog mutants. I've actually loaned boards to one of them, and he still hogs while he's on my board! Then there is the "Are you going, are you going" in your face tactic. Seriously, why do you think I'm here?
Once we pull up to a spot, and there are other guys or girls on the peak, I always tell my hog friends to just relax, give those out at the peak 15-20 minutes before you paddle out, and don't go straight to the peak.
Set up your beach gear, drink some water, stretch, shoot the shit, whatever, just don't paddle straight out. They've seen you pull up. They know you are here. Be cool. THEY NEVER LISTEN and then get frustrated with the bad vibe THAT THEY CREATED!
I might have to make them watch this video!
Finally, trash on the California coast has gotten way out of hand. I've seen people leave old Weber kettles and all the BBQ trash behind on the beach. F-------K! What is wrong with these people? And rangers along my coast aren't allowed to enforce anything. Just suggest.
How about I leave that sh-----t on your front porch? I am not exaggerating here, so thanks Koa. Hopefully the message gets out. Great video.
Side note: Saw some really ignorant folks ignore the lifeguards at Sandy Beach one day. After three warnings, a very tactful lifeguard, over his bullhorn, in full Hawaiian accent, loud enough for all to hear, told them in no uncertain terms, to find another beach. Woke them up finally.

I reckon theres a case for a social step backwards here in the UK. Breaks are getting more and more crowded here with surf cams everywhere now.. everyone piling in when its half decent getting in the way and paddling for waves they're never gonna catch. Totally clueless about the line up etiquette and it seems to just be ok now. Maybe we should bring back a bit of 80's 90's educating and calling people out.. stop these drop ins, collisions and sense of entitlements...

Don't panic is the best advice, may seem a little bit stupid at first, as saying "bruh no stress" to a guy that has a big exam.
But forcing yourself by breathing very calmly, having a relaxed mind, going under the waves, all that will ensure that you won't do shit like trying to outspeed a wave, getting hit on the head without any air in the lungs etc ..
I say that to friends in the water, after some time, some of them ended up understanding that, now they are not that afraid to take a beating because they know that if they stay calm, it'll be alllllright(just remind yourself that you are at the mercy of the ocean, kinda zeus vs a wasp)

  • @jaybleu6169

All good advice. Can you come down to Waikiki and tell people to wear a leash? I see some of the better surfers go without one and it drives me crazy. It's great that you're confident enough as a swimmer that you feel like you don't need it, but it's not about you. Your board becomes an unguided missile when you wipe out. Consider the safety of others in the lineup.

Don’t paddle on the shoulder when someone is inside of you and paddling.
If you paddle for a wave and miss go to the end of the line (Brazilians)
Don’t even turn for a wave unless it’s your turn and you’re going
If people followed his list and these everyone would be stoked all the time..

Don't screw up and think that apologizing is the answer. You need to not get in the way in the first place. You do that by thinking ahead of time what peak you are going for (if a beach break) and how to stay out of the riding zone. And if your arms are out of shape, don't go out in waves too big for your boat engine (your endurance).
