This is so beautiful. I keep coming back to it. I usually prefer the airy-fairy high female voices on this song but this version grew on me. Majorly. Eh, it's the Simple Minds, bound to happen. And Alan puts a lot of heart in it. All around beautiful.
I love the earlier version that Stivell recorded on Chemins de Terre (English title - From Celtic Roots) even more. Because the song lyrics are from a man's point of view, it seems most appropriate with a male vocalist.
It is typically graceful of her, and also thoroughly appropriate, that Loreena McKennitt gives credit to the poet who composed the lyrics. In the introduction to "Collected Poems of Padraic Colum" (1953) John L. Sweeney writes of Colum that "oddly enough he will be remembered by many who (as Yeats noted) have never heard his name. At least one of his poems "She Moved Through the Fair", with an air composed by the late Herbert Hughes, has so securely acquired the status of folksong that it has been collected as such."
thanks to share this great musical moment to the world… Vraiment magnifique cette combinaison de diferent tempéraments ! Seldom seen and heard this magic… thanks to both masters of music - please go on... Merci, merci beaucoup !
@YCSMusic Its an Irish song that was written just over a hundred years ago in 1909. There are now hundreds of versions recorded (I think). In my opinion, this a great performance. I wish they had shown the other band members a little more. Thanks Steve.
@Michael Halligan Right!! Many of these fantastic songs were written in the same period and also before.. Others were from 1350 (More or less) O_O This is outstanding.. We cannot thank these amazing songwriters who wrote them, maybe yes, only doing great covers like that one. Thanks a ton for that!
HI They almost nailed it, but missed out the most important lyrics ' Like the swans at evening glide over the lake'! Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua.
@leebedy71 True, Lee. In fact, they could have just recorded a version of this song rather than "Belfast Child" for the Street Fighting Years album. Perhaps. Although, I don't think this would have gone to number one. Far less commercial. Cheers Lee.
Beautiful tune. Weird, this is the second time i came across the year 1909 in a matter of 3 hours. One instrumental ( this upload) and the other a recorded instrument that will lead my resolve in a dispute. Keep up the good work Tony....Cheers !
Ce n'est pas "lack of kind" mais "lack of kine" (My father won't slight you for your lack of cattle/wealth.) Il faut réfléchir un peu au sens des mots plus qu'essayer de les entendre au travers le bruit de la production.
Simple Minds is one of my favorite bands and this is one of my favorite songs so a perfect mix of the two 😊
Simply beautiful. Class!

@ADDELHAIZEPETER Yes. Its not a direct copy & the lyrics are totally different too. It also only applies to the first part of "Belfast Child".

These Divinely inspired Magnificent Classics beat the Absolute satanic crap in modern pop music. 😘🥰😍❤️🙏🤩😇🏜🏔🌷🐝
In total agreement. From one who's ancestry goes back to the farms on the west of Ireland - just good people.
@larsniebuhr There are plenty to choose from (from different artists). This is one of the better versions performed! Cheers!
