Not liking C-3PO. The overall sculpt seems off to me. The head seems a bit odd. It's obviously C-3PO but something about the likeness seems wrong.
R2-D2 is amazing. The dome light feature and the third leg are amazing. Most innovative features I've ever seen on an R2! I wish it came with the claw arm, buzz saw, and radar dish.
Ok so I just received both my C-3PO and R2-D2 today in the mail and must say in person these are AWESOME!!!! These will most definitely be my definitive droids for the foreseeable future! The neck on C3PO doesn't look anywhere nearly as skinny in hand, as I thought it would, and R2 is on point as well. Keep up the great reviews Robo!
Yeah, when people started commenting on the neck I didn't see it much. It's definitely gotta be experienced in-hand at least once. Thanks man!
it's interesting how mafex takes 2 to 3 attempts to get a somewhat definitive version, and figuarts just nailed it at first most of the time (i'm looking at you jango)

Am I the only one that never noticed those feet stools for Kenny Baker? I was legit surprized learning that, as I have never actually noticed them. That really goes to show how well they hid those things.
These things are gorgeously done! I can't wait to hopefully order my copy of these droids!
The blue panels that fold out are called the Spacecraft Linkage and Control arms and R2 used them to open the escape pod door from the Tentative 4 or whatever the ship was called, the tool that you popped out first, on R2's right side is his Computer Interface Arm which is used to access terminals, and the 2nd arm on R2's left is the Fine Manipulator Arm which is what R2 used to play holo-chess with Chewbacca. And the camera is actually a projector.
Just some stuff I'd let you know about, I'm not an astromech engineer but I've studied astromechs. Anyway, amazing review and I NEED these 2!
Oh, and the Black Series R2 is the size and proportions that it is because it's supposed to resemble the original 1977 3.75 inch R2-D2 figure.

Great review as always Robo! I absolutely love my Bandai kits, especially Gold Guy, and haven't found anything that comes close to competing with them, but this R2 looks fantastic! I'm not 100% sold on this 3P0 in part because of the dull colour, but with a bit of weathering it will look good.

Great review thank you! I just bought the R2-D2 because of all the cool features. My favorite being the leg covers as I've never seen those on an R2 figure before and I always noticed those when I first saw the movie.

I really, really like the light color change option on Aroo. Originally, I thought they were going to be different colored parts that needed to be removed and plugged in. I'm so happy to see that they're simply button-activated.
Yeah, it's so easy and fun, I love it. That alone makes this the best one for me. Until I break it. Then I'll be mad and hate it.
I have to say when I was watching this video something seemed off about c3po but now that I've got both the droids in my hands they absolutely blew me away they're perfect!
Yeah, after some people pointed out a little oddness in the video, I look at it in-hand and just think, nope, love it! Well, the finish could be better, but in every other way, love it.

I got these two the other day. I'm almost up to date with the SHF Star Wars line but I've got to say I think R2 is my favourite figure. It just looks so good, has weight to it and clicking the buttons is satisfying. I hope Bandai do more droids in the future.
Yeah, I think it's my favorite R2 now and I'd buy the hell out of any repainted they want to give us. Especially R4.

@11:40 even earlier, Artoo uses his little fold out blue chest stripes/manipulator arms to activate and open the escape pod on the Tantive IV! Love that Figuarts included these, the only way R2 could be more perfect is if they had included a Sensorscope or other pop up head gadgets (and they must be built in and pop out of slide out- none of that chintzy cheap snap on crap that Hasbro did with their under scaled and underwhelming and massively disappointing R2 Black Series! But then Figuarts would have options for an Empire R2 soi can't wait for that!!!!
I can't believe they didn't just make a hand with the comlink molded to it. Of all the times it would make sense to have a dedicated hand holding something they instead give you a half centimeter piece of plastic that will roll into a crack and be lost forever.

I have to say, the model kit 3PO still looks to be my choice aesthetically, but the proportions look good on the Figurarts. The light up eyes would make this figure pop though! Wish they could do that... but that R2 looks great! Great video 😎

These are the droids I'm looking for! R2 is the one I've been looking for especially. I think with all these accessories and the appearance I'll pick this up! Idk I think I could use the all the accessories from all the original trilogy but for a new hope these are perfect. Also maybe glue the communicator in 3pos hand? Idk haha

Yesterday, at least, I saw Spiderman and I thought that the guy who plays Shocker (the bearded one) looked just like you. There were moments that I literally was 100% sure that it was you hahaha

Great figures, but with the revelation that all future black series protocol droids having arm articulation puts me on edge for a new BS C-3PO... And model kit R2 gets my money, what with him also coming with r5-d4

I'm so glad I cancelled my pre-order for this C-3PO. It's exactly what I though/feared it would end up being. Dull finish, cheap black series painted look. When are these companies going to figure out you can't finish C-3PO in anything other than vac metal gold chrome. For my money Mafex original takes it by a mile. That is a great figure. Sorry Robo no offence meant towards you I'm glad you posted the video confirming for me what I thought it would end up being.
Agreed. I think MAFEX clinches it, even with the QC issue, because of the sculpt and finish.
Oh no, no offence at all. You all know my feelings on the MAFEX, haha, that's why the Figuarts wins over for me. But in a perfect world, this would have the finish of the MAFEX, which is my favorite "look" Now if the damn thing would stand up.
Even though the OT mafex 3po was broken. I think the shininess of it is way better than the dull figuarts finish. Also I feel like the Mafex R2 sculpt is more accurate plus the weathering is superb on it. Still gonna stick with the Mafex. Good review.

Great review! I personally like the Mafex C3PO and R2D2 due to their likeliness with the model kit and actual design. Durability wise, the SHfiguarts figures would win.
That's why I prefer the Figuarts (C-3PO at least). They don't crumble in my hand like the MAFEX.

These are the droids I'm looking for. They're incredible! Both are on the perfect scale for the Hasbro's Black Series Collection. R2-D2 is much better sized than the 1st BSC (Which is a bit too short for my taste.
Although Hasbro has recently released yet another R2D2 for ROTJ 40th anniversary, and it's almost the same scale as the S.H. Figuarts one, The S.H. Figuarts looks superior in quality (And in price). In one hand Hasbro's has a new feature on which win can store loads of accesories inside it, The painting job is poor nex to the Figuarts in the other hand we have the "colored dome lights " and the metalic blue painting is awesome.

I was worried for these figures (mainly c3-po, and if bandai could pull of a good figure seeing how mafex needed 2 tries and its still not perfect) Im glad these came out great, I wont have to cancel my preorders now. All we need now is Ben Kenobi to finally come out and a Princess Leia to finish the Ep.IV main heroes.

Finally! Been keeping my eye on the old TH-cam for a review and our main man got there first. Nice one! I'm a little relieved that they are not a right off. I've been holding off on all others (except Black Series) for these. Just need a landspeeder now. So Liam Neeson in August and that may be it for the year. Unless they decide to surprise us with Obi Wan, Old Man Han, Traitor Finn or some of the others we occasionally see in the background of a photo. Still pissed about the Bluray Death Trooper Specialist. Would have a complete set if it wasn't for that nonsense.
I have a feeling they are waiting for Force Friday to reveal the rest of the year. The Obi-Wan (I don't know why they would hold off on him, unless he's scheduled after the new movie reveals) was shown at various stages of prototyping so I'm fairly confident we'll get him.
I'm a little afraid he may suffer from "can't sit syndrome" due to the robes. That's a pisser when it comes to putting him in a Landspeeder.
I wish you would do reviews in 4k. Pretty please?

Oh believe me, I'd love to do higher quality. My camera is even built for it. But my internet absolutely sucks out here in BFE Arkansas. This 15 minute video took an hour and 15 minutes to upload. The hour long FwooshCast the other day took more than 7 hours. It's not my gear, it's my location. Someday, someday...

Interesting. The articulation on C3PO is great, but I'm sticking with my model kits. Am just not keen on the dull gold. Crazy how the R2's are nearly all great (except the BS one) but there's sooo much variation with each C3PO?
A very nice take on our favourite droids. But not that much better than the Bandai model kits to make me want to upgrade.

The panel lining, the spring action leg and the dome paint put this R2 over the top for me. I'm not the least bit impressed with C3-P0, however. Call me crazy, but I actually prefer the Black Series version of him.
I still think the super shiny finish of the model kit is the closest to movie accuracy. The other dull finishes look on par with the force awakens 3P0 though. I think I'm gonna need an R2 though, that thing is badass
Yeah, like I said, I wish it was way more dirty or way more shiny. This is kind of that in-between. It needs to look like the MAFEX. Not be like the MAFEX, just look like it, finish-wise.

I believe the MAFEX has the best finish, definitely. Need to replicate that onto the Figuarts, then it would be perfection.
I just got the SH Figuarts C-3po from AmiAmi, and I can't believe how cheap it feels in hand. It is really, really lightweight compared to my other SHF figures. I expected a bit of heft. Oh well.
Robo, what do you do with Marvel Legends that get replaced on the shelf. Like you have the definitive bull's-eye from the marvel Knights wave. Do you keep the Toybiz one on the shelf or do you bag it?
I have two tubs of overflow/fodder/outdated Legends. Two tubs of DCUC. A tub or two of miscellaneous. I can't seem to ever make myself get rid of anything, I love it all too much. Plus it's fun to go a couple of years and then dig back through, find and remember things that may still be cool.
Nice review as always. For me, as a few others have said, the C-3PO head and neck just don't look right.
I got an invoice from Hobbylink Japan a week ago that made me want to bang my head on a desk, after realizing that I preordered R2 but somehow slipped out C-3PO from the virtual cart, only to later also find out that he's discontinued and sold out everywhere.

ROBO, does the prequel battle droid head attach to the body like the C3PO head attaches with the battle droid? (& comes with it) I just boufht these 2 from japan today :)
I don't think so, I think that 3PO head that came with the Battle Droid has a special connection just for that figure.

I like the look of the MAFEX more, this one is almost too clean, but man is this a better toy. Solid articulation and range, good size.
So with the black series R2 it looks like hasbro did mess up the size i mean it looks way under scale. Is the figuarts one more correct in scale for the movies and could the figuarts R2 blend in well with the rest of my black series R2 cause its beautiful i love the highlighted compartment look on R2's body. Thanks man u rule!
Oh hell yeah, every import including the Figuarts is in way better scale than the Black Series version. I use the SHF as my main on the shelf along with various Black Series, works great.

ILMAO Robo, I hate when i cut my finger nails then i need them to open a specific part on a figure. Now why didn't they give the C3PO the simulated light feature for his eyes. Like they did for the R2. Maybe it would have been to hard to pull off. I usually only get the human faced figures from Figuarts. But I might have to add these two to the collection. Great Vid and review Robo.
Yeah, it seems like no one can really pull that off well. I kind of dig how Black Series did it, just to put a little gleam in it, but maybe the eyes are too deep for something like that? No idea. I'm expecting some of the geniuses out there to have a light kit on the market before winter though.

Mystic Knight 16 i would say wait for Revo to do a second run on Venom. They usually tighten up any qc issues and that way you can get it for retail as well

I'm sorry to bring the bad news, Robbie, but... I think old man Obi-Wan Kenobi from SH Figuarts won't probably be able to sit down in the sand speeder because of his plastic robes. Hope I'm wrong but the pics and vid clips we've seen seem to show little to no joints to allow sitting.

C-3POs "Sticking" joints are Ratchets... They are there to prevent the head from getting loose over time.

In the actual driver's seat he kind of scrunches over into Luke, but he fits. I'm slowly realizing the speeder is a little small though. Still kicks ass.
Awww this review makes me cry, for a month a waiting to pre order R2-D2 from amiami and they sold out the day before pay day 😭 then I preordered it from HLJ and they sold out, it just was never meant to be..... apart from eBay charging me double the price grrrrrrr

The Fwoosh when I first saw them up for pre-order I just thought ah I'll get one when it's released then as it got closer I thought ok I'll preorder one then when I missed out I saw how quickly they were going on eBay and the price was raising each time, I paid double for mine but I bet some people will pay 4x as much
It's insane what some of the Figuarts figures jump to right after release. And then there's Jango. But, these are awesome, paying more sucks but you'll love them.

Damn fine review as always! Unlit eyes and the dull metallic champagne chassis seem like odd choices C3PO, considering how well SHF usually design and engineer their figures? But they look great otherwise!
Oh man, I love that, champagne chassis. But yeah, odd to stumble so close to the goal line (I think that's a sports term and fits the situation, not quite sure) but with everything else it's still an awesome piece.
Holy shit! Having this guy in hand: best C-3PO hands down... and I even like the color. Most screen accurate sculpt (although a replacement chest plate with the restraining bolt would have been nice). Does not feel flimsy - but has a weird rattle in the legs. Review was spot on!
Is it in the legs or is it the arms? I think on mine the rattle comes from those bars on the inside of the elbows, but I didn't hunt long enough to be sure. I just remember hearing a rattle. And I'm glad you like as much as I did!
Couldn't tell the rattle's source, but if you hear it too - I feel better. Yeah, the color starts growing on you almost immediately out of the package. R2-D2 is plain Jane but solid craftsmanship. Now I want Old Ben and a Princess Leia (hoping for a Fall surprise announcement).
Great review as always but... it hardly ever happens but I kinda disagree on the Threepio there. The neck is wrong and I personally do not like the satin finish. R2 is damn near perfect but so is my model kit. To look at, the model kits are my go-to droids. To fiddle around with, these are probably a lot better. To stare in dismay and shake my head in anger at, I have the original Mafex.
Haha, I can see where you're coming from. In a perfect world I'd want either the model or MAFEX finish on the Figuarts, then I'd be 100% happy. But for me this one wins out because of size and durability and articulation.

Alejandro Zindel They are! Well, it's either gonna be ANH or Rogue One. Doesn't look as good as the Black Series 40th Vader so far, though.
The model kit is more accurate but the errors on the Figuarts are subtle. It's missing a bunch of tiny details around the collar, and some parts were made thicker and/or protrude less than they should to improve durability. These areas include the little antenna on the head, the pieces on the sides of the knee and the "Wolverine claws" on the hands.
The sculpt on the Black Series Threepio is straight up garbage.

Really, that's the only big difference if you've weathered up the model. The size and most of the sculpt is the same. But I do love the flippy lights, those are amazing.

The Figuarts isn't bad but I feel like the MAFEX may take it. Or at least match it, but with the other characters Medicom is coming out with it'll make for a much better display.

The Starpool Show/Reviews Figuarts 3po just doesn't look... REAL to me, I dunno how to describe it. Like, I can tell it's a toy, y'kno. Model kit 3po looks straight outta the movie, from proportions to the chrome finish.
Neither finish (model kit /Figuarts) really do 3PO justice as he appeared in most of ANH. That said you really can't go wrong with either/or.
Yeah, that's why I said I'd prefer a more dirty looks. Really, like the MAFEX, if that damn thing would stay together. But like you said, you can't really go wrong with any of them.

The Model kits look better. The Figuarts C-3PO looks too thin and I am not a fan of the finish. The only thing I do not like about the model kit is that the feet look like they are on a bit of a platform, the sole is too high. Thanks for comparing the different figures. I had the Hasbro 3-PO but sold it. I am now going with the model kit.

Jason Caldwell I haven't either, but I recommend getting the UPC and using BrickSeek. They can tell you whether an item is in stock in some stores, just not whether it's on the shelf yet or not.
