In this video, I show 3 ways to label fruit trees. These options range from $0.15 to $40.00 per fruit tree, depending on your preference and budget.

    I guess I'm old school. I use a notebook. Orchard layout is sketched with info on each tree, variety, when planted e.t.c. My grandfather was a dairy farmer and used notebooks for every thing he did on the farm. It was cool to read thru them after he passed.

      I LOVE the idea of a detailed notebook. I even created a beautiful spreadsheet to track feeding, pests, growth, etc. I just find myself using it as an afterthought, and it rarely informing anything I do. I admire people who have a clear system like your grandfather. That's a neat heritage piece to be able to look back on.

    We painted larger river rocks white and wrote in black paint then covered in epoxy. My daughter got creative with rainbows and whatnot on the backs of the rocks.

      Marcus, I LOOOOOOOVE that idea! We've got a MILLION rocks, a bunch of extra white paint, and kiddos who love to draw. I'm doing this.

    Everything you said is true about planting and forgetting. I do have my trees written down, except for one mystery apple. So glad to find your site I like what you’re showing and you do it without a lot of mumbo-jumbo. Thank you so much.

    Thank you for the post. I have been using the metal stakes with copper labels for my irises for years. Will start using this to label my fruit trees now. There is a certain amount of labor and cost with the copper labels. Found that they need to be crimped to the wire. I stamp the name into the copper. Even when it changes color, you still have the name. Our winds are definitely a problem for the aluminum tags, but it is a great idea.

    Thanks Cameron! Awesome ideas and in addition I love the painted rock idea as well. I have always stuck with maps and diagrams but they are easily lost or not kept up to date so the aluminum tags sound great.

      YES! I've got a map somewhere, that's only missing 30 trees or so on it 😂

      @@TheBusyGardener I know what you mean, being a caregiver 24/7 I swear sometimes I feel like my loved one’s dementia is rubbing off on me. Anyway, just ordered myself some. They’re a great price, so much cheaper than some other much less durable labels I’ve used .. 😊👍 thanks again!

    Funny I have reached the stage I need to tag lol (I cannot even remember what colours my 4 in 1 finger limes are positioned lol).
    I was planning on using my punch stamp set that I use to mark ingots I cast to make some nice labels.
    Although that girdling problem, made me think, there was a product you attached to curtain chains to stop kids from suffocating on them..... wonder if I can get that to work with the trees, so if it starts to girdle it breaks off.

  • @TheBusyGardener

    In addition to tags, it'd do you well to have at least a quick skecth of your layout, or one page journal that also lists these things. How do you keep track of your trees?

    Another great video, Cameron! I also created a diagram of each tree's location with its identification. We get a lot of wind, so I am always concerned about tags flying off or scraping the tree, etc. Thanks again!!

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Thom! You're exactly right. I've got a diagram that I've added to, as well as an initial journal that records some of the basic stats as well. I've been known to come into the orchard and find a tag just laying there waiting to get buried by mulch! Thanks for watching 😀

      @@TheBusyGardener Thanks for making your videos! I love them! What with wind, snow and freezing temperatures, most tags here don't hold up well. I will be getting some of those aluminum tags. And... 80 trees and shrubs! I thought I was into it. I'm just a piker compared to you!

    I use soda cans that i cut to size and put a metal wire on and do exactly like you showed in the video. My only issue is they blow off.

    I use the Impress-O-Tags brand. They are great as Cameron said. I also ordered some of the "cheaper" aluminum tags, and they are junk. They are too thin and bend very badly; I threw them away.

    I bought some aluminum tags and thought it was a great idea, but after a couple years they look like they have been nailed with hail or something with lots of dents all over them. Luckily I can still read most the tags but not sure why they all did that.

    The link you shared shows the price is $14 on amazon for 50 which is $0.28 per tree, considerably more than 15 cents :)

    Along the lines of the Emboss-o-tags, if you need only a few tags just take a soda can and heavy duty scissors, or tin snips, and cut your own. An 8d nail and hammer for the hanging holes, some "spare" insulated 18 gauge solid wire, and you're "good to go"!

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What all you've got is a can, snips, a nail, and a bunch of trees, that'll do!

    Have you gotten any fruit from the Royal Crimson Cherry? I only want to plant one cherry tree. Would this type be the ideal? I’m in Los Angeles County.

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Los Angeles county, you would need a low chill cherry. Unfortunately, the low chill cherries usually need another pollinator planted with them. Royal Crimson is it's second season in the ground, and I don't think it has any blooms this year, although I did prune it pretty severely last year. I expect lots of growth this year, and blooms next year. Take a look at Stella cherry, which I think might be self fruitful. Although you will want to make sure you have enough chill hours

    • @fernandovelasco3006
      @fernandovelasco3006 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your response. Dave Wilson’s website has the Royal Crimson Cherry as self fruitful and very low chill hours that’s why I was asking you. Stella may also work. Thank you.
