The whole topic of sentience depends on how we define what sentience and feelings mean in the context of a machine. Even if we decide that a machine feels, it will be so far removed from how animals do that we probably won't be able to intuitively grasp it. The same issue comes up when talking about plants for example, are plants sentient if/when they have some type of analogous system that produces similar results to a human brain and nervous system and how similar does it need to be to be considered "sentient" by human standards? The major interesting difference between an artificial intelligence and a tree here being that a large language model can actually communicate in a way that we as humans can easily understand instead of more alien electrophysiological and chemical communication used by plants.
