As a non-mechanic, your description of a "simple carburetor" had me shaking my head. All those little parts seem way beyond simple to me. Thanks for the lesson!
I mean, they seem and to an extent are complex, but the functions "under the umbrella" are pretty simple. Take fuel, vaporize it, mix it and send it on its merry way. When you compare it with more modern ones for V8s they are... very simple.
Then there is the other side of the coin. unfounded confidence. "it's a simple part" and then it gets all kinds of destroyed because the person is not capable and unable to learn from mistakes...I happily sold parts to these guys but their later attempt at warranty claim did not go so smoothly.

Old carburetors are great fun to rebuild. It has been my experience that a critical part of restoring is the shafts and bushings that operate the butterflies. I doubt this application would be impacted as much, but I've seen very, very little wear in those bushings cause issues to the point it was nearly impossible to get the proper stoichiometric setup.
Fussy stuff that needs to be done. If you don't do it when you have the chance it will always come back and haunt you. I have done it many times. Carburetors do not fall under the rule "If it ain"t broke don't fix it". If if it runs good, fix it anyway. Even if it is just a good cleaning. It will save a lot of grief in the long run. Thanks. Neat to see an updraft carb rebuild and the difference to a downdraft. What would you think about sharing (for newer viewers), a quick Squatchsketch to explain the difference between updraft and downdraft carbs before rebuild assembly? Also, maybe some advantages or disadvantages?
While i don't particularly enjoy rebuilding them, i do like to tinker with them. Polished passages, bigger blades, profile cuts. I've actually improved a number of them. I've also fritzed a number of them too, one would be surprised just how on the edge between just right and no longer working some of these older carbs are. They really did a good job on them.
Great video, buddy!! I have done a number of different carburetors in working with Rudy. The H's and M's are some of the best in my opinion. With that said, it's hard to beat a big brass Marvel Schebler DX304!
The H carburetor is a great carburetor. There is no reason not to dig out the old packing from the load needle. Every "good" kit comes with a new packing gland. A brass choke felt retainer is in the basic kit too. I find it much easier to knock out the drip filter welch plug with a long but small diameter punch inserted from the inside of the carburetor. One tap and you can then reuse this plug if necessary as many "basic" kits do not include this part.

When you were talking about the overflow drain and this carburetor, I was thinking about how that was the signal that Old Emma was ready to start when I was hand cranking her. As soon as I saw that drip, it was time to open the choke and get ready to hear her hit and go. I can still hear her hit the first 2 or 3 licks and take off. It's been at least 40 years since I last heard her start up other than in my memory.
15:05, the graphite packing could you use the packing from a plumbing supply place? And a merry Christmas and a happy next year to you and yours period exclamation mark😊

My H was a distillate field conversion to gasoline.Meaning when i got it, it had a delco distributor and gasoline manifold. However, the carburetor is still the distillate design. there are minor differences from yours, the idle jet is one.

One of my “Special” non special tools when working on carbs is a muffin tin. The pocket are great for “compartmentalizing areas of the carb on tear down. Will save hours of search time for the detent or on some pump check ball that some how go from 0 to 60 off the bench. Another favorite is the “tuner” sprays from outboard mfgs. For delicate brass parts and jets. Throw everything in the bowl cover with the spray and soak. Overnite works best.
I have swallowed both choke plate screws and had them banging betwixt the piston and head. Fortunately it was a Ford 2.3 4 cylinder, which was very bulletproof. Ran it for years without seeing the pistons. Learned to always stake (or at least bugger) those threads.

Did a carburetor kit on my Mrs's Cub a while back. Getting the kit was the worst part. Case IH didn't have one in stock. Fortunately General Trading fixed me up.
I had to rebuild my great grandfather’s F12 carb and I didn’t want to buy a kit and the packings were junk so I went to menards and they sold graphite and Teflon placking stock there and seems to work great
Do you have a hard time throwing out old parts after replacing them with new ones from the kits? I do.... piles of leftover parts. Anyhoo, Merry Xmas!!
@@squatch253i have used my stock of extra parts for field repairs or a dropped on the floor and lost situation. Sometimes the current proper kit doesn't contain certain things anymore, so the stockpile is useful there too :)

My comment was I notice the H carburetor is like a half bowl short of an M carburetor remembering the M has two floats paired together instead of the H's one float.
Toby, a few weeks ago, you were telling me that the gas tank was clean inside, which I do believe, but I guess what I was asking is what kind of fuel will you be running in the tractors? For this pump gas, ethanol, tends to cause rust inside metal tanks when they sit for periods of time. Don't mean to be a pain in the back side.
This H has always run best on 91 Octane, whereas the Super M likes 87 Regular better. Sometimes they get cross-blended with the other one’s fuel but we treat all of our gasoline with Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer and have never had problems with anything 👍

Was it more common to see this style carburetor on the distillate fueled tractors? Our old H distillate had this one, is this the Zenith carburetor ? whereas the gasoline versions often were fitted with Marvel scheblers?
These were the standard type carburetors for both the distillate H as well as the gasoline H, although the two had different jetting volumes installed to suit the different fuels. The later Super H had the bigger Marvel Schebler type, but none of those were set up for distillate.
So, if memory serves me correctly, the W4 should be the same carburetor? The super might be a little larger but should be pretty close. I tried to clean up our W4 carburetor but everything leaked. Can’t wait for the re-assembly and tuning videos.
I don't know I'm due to making it authentic using the original carburetor is a good idea but I guess if it was me I would just go and buy a marcuni carburetor from go power sports Cause carburetors are a pain in the butt to work on. have a great day

It can be anything that you choose, there are plenty of options on the market that all work - liquid/paste thread sealant, silicone based thread sealant, teflon tape, etc. - I could list the different ones all day, and there are very few "wrong" choices, aside from just using something that wasn't made for that specific application. Most of the bolt threads I sealed on the H here I just used Permatex Ultra Black, but that's just one of many silicones that all basically do the same thing :-)

Slowly getting better, but there are still a few issues with trying to focus in on things that are close or very small, and still difficult to transition between bright and dark spaces but overall I’m back to doing most of the things I did before. Still not allowed to run, lift super heavy things, or ride on bumpy Caterpillars though.

You might check with Old Coleman Parts to get some graphite packing. It is still used in fettling with old lanterns and stoves.

I can imagine how on carburetor like that. The pivots and there pushing's can wear out and you get some funny things with cold or hot start.

That carb is the same as the one on my sailboat’s flat head four. Very simple device.

Sometimes all those little screws can be an adventure to got loose especially if the carburetor has sat with bad gas in it

The W-4 has the same carburetor, but the Super W-4 has a bigger Marvel-Schebler style.

That carb is much to small. You should put a Holley 4 barrel on it.
