An unfortunate representation of where WV is today. Lotta companies packed their bags or closed their doors. Hopefully things can get back on track there
My dad lived in Charleston when I was in high school. I spent a few weeks there every summer. It was a nice city in the 80s. Oh, and it's pronounced ka-NAW-ha.
I lived in Charleston from 2004 - 1012. It was a very picturesque town. Kana wha may be the correct pronunciation but 100 percent of west Virginians say ka-naw! I remember asking why they pronounce it that way and their answer was, “that’s the way the Indians said it. Too bad they are all inbred fools! They continue to vote Republican even though they are the poorest of the poor out of all the nation. Even manchin who claims to be democrat is truly a retrumplican. It is truly a hillbilly haven!
lol
The river it is pronounced "Ka-naw-a"
Despite the mountainous terrain in general, wouldn’t the presumably PLENTIFUL amounts of underutilized & abandoned industrial buildings… particularly in parts of the state within immediate enough proximity to interstates and/or 4 lane divided highways (to which are constructed to a higher standard than other Appalachian states) make better candidates than any to be converted into major warehouse/distribution/fulfillment center space?
Because on that regard in particular, West Virginia in general could become an underrated logistics hub if local/state leaders & developers coordinate VERY accordingly.
As they would effectively have:
>half the Northeast
>half of the Midwest
& half of the Deep South a short enough truck drive away. And that entire side of the country & Canada’s most important population centers within less than 2 days away by truck.
And I’m not talking about just Amazon or VERY half-assed 3PL companies, but substantial potential for more respectable companies to invest in a state that most desperately needs it and employ people who’d likely be thankful for steady full time employment (and non-welfare) based income.
Definitely miss my hometown of Charleston, WV. God bless ❤️💙💜
It's a joke locally that Akron Ohio is the largest city in West Virginia, because our region has likely the largest concentration of native born West Virginians.
I was there this past weekend. Been there many times. Love it! Taylor Books is the best!
Do you think a west coast person could make it home?
@@LaughingblueSu depends. Marin/Sonoma County Californian would definitely love it! Pacific Beach/La Jolla Californian probably not. Full disclosure I did previously live in Mission Hills, San Diego, CA
My hometown
lol
4:09 - thats really pretty!
Union carbide (now Dow) had a plant in South Charleston, someone told me they made the same stuff as the union carbide plant that had the disaster in Bhopal, India
I wants read somewhere taste well, that South Charleston, West Virginia, have the highest per capita, cancer rate of anywhere in the world, not sure if that is really true
I spent some time in West Virginia in 1987 working for him now defunct loan company, closed offices in Clarksburg, Fairmont, Charleston, and eventually Parkersburg
At the time I thought Charleston was not a bad city.
The chemical that killed so many in India was MIC. It was manufactured at the Union Carbide Institute plant, about 10 minutes west of the South Charleston plant. Also I've never heard anything about the Charleston area having the highest cancer rate in the world. A quick Google search didn't find that info either.
@@rabelmountaineer funny I just googled it and there are many articles about it
Including one that describes Charleston and South Charleston area as cancer Valley
Many cited sources with statistics that showed a trend in that area, but there is really no definitive truth that that is what caused it, one article cited lifestyle choices.
@g.t.richardson6311 I found the article you're referring to on WV Encyclopedia but it doesn't say anything about highest rates in the world as you said. Nor does it quote any actual studies just talks about conceptions. My search lead me to an article on US News and World report that lists the 25 counties in the US with the highest cancer rates. Kanawha county (where Charleston and South Charleston are located) was not on the list. I don't disagree that there is probably a high rate of cancer in the area but it is not the highest in the world, not even the highest in the US.
@@rabelmountaineer ok so not highest in the world, but likely higher than a lot of places
Much of my memory of this is from 1987 when I spent close to a year closing offices in West Virginia for a loan company, spent time in Fairmont, Clarksburg, Parkersburg, and Charleston. Had many consumer loans with people that worked at all the chemical plants up and down the River from Parkersburg all the Way to Charleston and just listening to what the people said, who worked there. Obviously there is/was something to it at the time, but agree with you. It’s not the highest in the world.
At the time Those companies were clearly some of the highest paying employers in the state, comparable, or better than the coal industry
@@rabelmountaineer I remember staying in I believe it was a Ramada inn in South Charleston for a couple weeks
Just to note new company’s are moving in there are a lot festivals in the summer months with large draw of people we not dead yet and yes I live here I love the landscape
👍👍👍👍👍
As the cost of living rises and the quality of life falls in the urban Northeast, WV may become a sleeper for retirees with fat 401K accounts. State officials should buy TV commercials in major markets.
(Did I really need to tell them that.) 🤠
I winced every time he said "Kanawha." You'd think the narrator would look up the pronunciation of an unfamiliar name before he starts recording.
Us in Putnam county called it Ka-naw
Anyone familiar with Charleston WV knows that the river is
Ka-NAH-wa. You should re-record the portions that mention the river name. This is a major error that detracts from your credibility.
Not only did the narrator mispronounce it, but every comment I've read so far trying to correct his pronunciation has gotten the phonetic transcription wrong, too. Congratulations on getting it right!
@@bigscarysteve thanks. And to clarify further: it's Ka - NAH - wa, but the last syllable is very subtle; sort of only have pronounced.
It's sort of halfway between just plain Ka - NAW and Ka - NAH - wa.
Its not that deep
I lived there during the mid 80s, then again in the late 90s. It was good in the 80s and still tolerable in the 90s. But it was too far gone by the 2000s and is a total disaster
I could not listen past 1 minute of the mispronunciations of Kanawha.
Kanawha: Ka-naw-ha
You don't want to be EXACTLY like Asheville, NC. You'd probably have to up the game on drug abuse, homelessness and crime. Then give up your roots as to what made Appalachia what it is.
Kanawha = kan-aw
It could be what Happened to West Virginia
Theres a video i have for that as well.
I stopped there for gas. Nothing but junkies
It's mostly government workers in lobbyists because of the proximity to the state house
what did you expect at a gas station?
State leaders cant stop dreaming about coal.
I would LOVE to hear ONE person pronounce Kanawha correctly! 😫🙄😫
Can a what
PLEASE LEARN HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE NAME OF THE RIVER GOING BY CHARLESTON WV !!!
You say the word Kanawha wrong. Correct it pls.
1) it's
ka-NAHWha or ka-NAHW
2) while your "history" touches truth, it's twisted.
You don't know what you're talking about.
You mean Charleston, Virginia? (There is no West Virginia).
/s ?
@@JustinJamesJeep, that wasn’t sarcasm. I do not recognize West Virginia.
@@MatthewChenault bruh 🤣 what kind of imperial crap is that
@@JustinJamesJeep, West Virginia does not exist.
