  • Derek Bell shares his vivid memories of his time at Ferrari, which began when he caught the eye of Enzo Ferrari as a young F2 driver in 1968. He soon found himself touring Maranello and having lunch with the Commendatore.
But in a case of being in the right place at the wrong time, Bell describes being the victim of a pared-back Ferrari race programme and leaving the team in 1969.
He turned to sports cars, where once more he was spotted by Enzo, in a privately-entered Ferrari 512. Another call from Maranello saw him line up for his first Le Mans race in 1970. And the rest is glorious history.

Love these stories! Had the pleasure of meeting and working with Derek Bell during the IMSA 50th season at the 24 Rolex at Daytona. Justin Bell hired me to design and help launch The Torque Show with Tommy Kendall... A dream come true branding project! Thank you Justin ! Derek Bell was the first Michelin Mystery Guest:) Brilliant!

Good guy. Good driver. Good interview. I remember the Ferrari factory in the sixties. Very dark and gloomy.

I can't imagine being a teamed up with Jackie Ickx and Chris Amon. Also being older than both you had a lot to prove.
You guys talked a lot about Enzo destroying drivers, but wasn't he always about winning the constructor's championship, not the driver's? You drove for Enzo not for yourself, but the team. That internal conflict between Didier and Gilles left the deepest wound in Enzo's heart.
