Yes, the limited slip/locking VAQ differential/winter tire combination is quiet formidable. I've done 4 winter with that combination between two GTIs and remain highly impressed.
Really? I drive up and over 2 summits every day [ southern Oregon to northern California ] every day, and my gti just kicks its ass. Completely stock, 6 speed manual.
Yes it gets upgraded every few years the 6 speed manual got upgraded like 29 years ago No rev match No launch control No anti stall. no stop n go mode No no lift throttle shift mode No upgrade to allow it to handle more power mode No adjustable clutch and engagement point. No upgrade from six speed to seven or eight speeds in 20+ years. But way more fun and involvement in driving dependent on you not computers. And still almost 50 percent rate. Lower maintenance And substantially lower replacement cost with similar resale value
It sucks. It's more expensive to purchase, maintain (check the owners manual) and is best driven in automatic mode. The "paddles" seem ridiculous. I've driven two DSG GTIs and couldn't wait to get back into my six speed manual.
I drive a Rabbit edition manual and I have no issues with passing on the highway at stock power. The DSG is butter smooth but it's very annoying when trying to pull into gaps and pass because it's too slow to react and downshift a lot of the time; even in sport mode.
Ridgey that’s weird my mk7 GTI doesn’t take a while to downshift? And you’re right power wise on highway etc against most cars it’s more than enough but sometimes u need that more punch! Love my MK7 GTI 2015 it still surprises me how quick it can be but moving to 24 I would want something with 350/400bhp at least
I agree(i got a 2016 s manual) it is awesome at passing in nearly all scenarios. But i wouldnt mind my 4th gear 70mph pull to feel like my 2nd gear 20mph pull. So i plan on tuning as well.
yea the car really takes off with the torque its really easy to pass on the highway. I completely disagree as well about the passing power. . On DSG it is better to manual downshift and pass by hitting the paddle it will override and downshift and then all you gtta do is pull the stick back and it will go back into D.
This is actually a relatively common opinion. The R tends to understeer more with its heavier/ bulkier AWD system. For a quick, tossable car, the GTI is the way to go. But don't tune the GTI past ~300 hp without doing other stuff or you'll probably end up with torque steer
I love the fender setup. Im running apr stg 2 high output file, and it boogies. Stg 1 was def more low end and mid range, but the downpipe with stg 2 file opened up the top end like crazy.
How many clutches have you replaced since installing the various tunes? Will VW honor their factory warranty when any failure is deemed "related?" Of course you realize that any "tune" will greatly exacerbate the EA888's carbon buildup issues (valves and chambers), in addition to requiring more frequent oil and filter changes while placing much greater loads on your transaxle, half shafts and CV joints. You are aware of these issues, right?
34 highway? LOL wtf. Svr disabled, Ecs off, thing pulls crazy hard. Turbo inlet, muffler delete, intake, stage 1 tune and the car pulls hard. Do the OBD 11 mods. Also, wrong numbers , 281 crank is not right. 281 at the wheels yes. Stage 1’s are dynoing over 300whp. Apr tune is way more aggressive than uni. I love it
They all fry the factory clutch and void VWs warranty in cases where failures are deemed" related" to the various "tunes." So in that case you missed out on nothing.
I appreciate what you guys are trying to do by putting each voice in one side of the stereo, but as a headphones user, it's kind of annoying. just keep it mono
This is incorrect. The only performance difference the Autobahn has is adaptive chassis control. All cars in the MK7.5 lineup get what used to be the sport package on the MK7. All Mk7.5 GTIs get an LSD.
GTI Autobahn price is so close to the Golf R. As far as drivability, Golf R is a nice daily driver too with more features i.e. digital display and AWD. With stock GTI, traction is a challenge in some driving situations since it’s a FWD. Golf R’s AWD solves that issue.
I've got a 2019 Rabbit DSG with 11K on it. Thinking about Stage 1+ and cat back exhaust. Dont wanna do intake, intercooler or downpipe yet. Will I be able to hang with stock Veloster N or Type-R?
MK7 GTI stage 1 is rated for about 290whp and they weigh only 2950lbs, that power to weight demolishes Veloster N, Type-R and WRX, trust me it won't hang with them it'll flat out beat them by 2 car lengths minimum.
AsianRetroGamer I have a rabbit too and I haven’t been able to keep up with the type r but I’m stock except for a cat back. Honestly it might be pretty close for you having a dsg and stg1

Stage 1 is nerve-wracking... Plenty of power stock until of course you go stage 1. I went COBB and then went MAP stage 1 and it was great until I messed with stuff because I wanted to compare stock to Stage 1 and then within a week I started seeing the engine pull timing. It still pulls timing at 1.5k-2k rpm anything above 3k on the COBB stage 1 seems to be fine though. I will definitely be going with a pro-tune just for peace of mind.

how about driver mod and snow tires? took Team O'neil rally course, the GTI is a lot of fun in the snow, but winter tires are a must. My Mk7 is stock, swap btw Pilot sports 4S and Blizzaks WS80. Winter driving requires a lot of left foot braking, but the golf tends to cut power quite aggressively when LFB, hence, you need to always keep minimal pressure on the brake to over come this, then apply throttle. My current GTI is as fun as my old WRX in the snow, love it!

Or a 2020 GLI. CAR AND DRIVER's recent "Lightning Lap" event reported that their current model GLI produced a faster lap time than their most recently tested Golf R. Also, the Golf R uses VW's standard open front differential, while GTIs and GLIs use VW far more sophisticated VAQ differential, which is limited slip, torque vacating and fully lockable when conditions permit. Factor in the Golf Rs heftier weight and essentially all of its "on paper" advantage disappears.

My MK7 GTi PP is fine in the snow. Actually very good with Blizzaks. Why is one mirror black and one white?
Yes, the limited slip/locking VAQ differential/winter tire combination is quiet formidable. I've done 4 winter with that combination between two GTIs and remain highly impressed.
It sucks unless the lame factory clutch has been replaced with a good aftermarket unit that's rated for at least 350 ft-lbs of torque.
Really? I drive up and over 2 summits every day [ southern Oregon to northern California ] every day, and my gti just kicks its ass. Completely stock, 6 speed manual.
Randomly stumbled across this video and you were just down the road from my house.
If it was IE tuned it might actually be fast ;)
Bring your new dad whip out and let's race 😂
Trap speed on the IE stage 1? Last I checked they were not going to dethrone GIAC.
I’m late but it would be sick if you guys did a video together after COVID!
3:01 "DSG is amazing!" Facts...
Yes it gets upgraded every few years the 6 speed manual got upgraded like 29 years ago
No rev match
No launch control
No anti stall.
no stop n go mode
No no lift throttle shift mode
No upgrade to allow it to handle more power mode
No adjustable clutch and engagement point.
No upgrade from six speed to seven or eight speeds in 20+ years.
But way more fun and involvement in driving dependent on you not computers.
And still almost 50 percent rate.
Lower maintenance
And substantially lower replacement cost with similar resale value
It sucks. It's more expensive to purchase, maintain (check the owners manual) and is best driven in automatic mode. The "paddles" seem ridiculous.
I've driven two DSG GTIs and couldn't wait to get back into my six speed manual.
proopopop propopopop prrrrrprpooopopoop
I’m coming from a Toyota sienna to a 2010 GTI Mark6 and I am loving it only 80,000 miles on it to
SE brakes are the same as the Golf R just the calipers are red...i could be wrong tho..
You are right tho
yes, Autobahn brakes are the same i believe.
I completely disagree as well about the passing power. . On DSG it is better to manual downshift and pass by hitting the paddle it will override and downshift and then all you gtta do is pull the stick back and it will go back into D.
dont accelerate when downshifting on the dsg, take your foot off the pedal. it will reduce that lag your experiencing
I have a 2018 gti autobahn, and I never have trouble passing people on the highway stock.
pretty sure the SE also comes with limited slip differential and bigger brakes.
It does, I have an SE..
Fact. I also have one.
Yup, so does mine
Even the S includes those options too now. As it should be!
My 17 SE has the LSD, Brakes, Leather, and Xenons. I missed out on the Nav and adaptive cruise, but I am ok with that.
Nav is the most pointless feature nowadays with Apple carplay/android auto being standard on so many cars...
You also missed out on the dual adjustable lumbar support (drivers seat) and a variety of other things you've conveniently managed to overlook.
@@heyitsme939 Exactly. Nav should not be a purchase factor at all.
first person ive ever heard say they'd take a gti over an R.
unless you're poor
This is actually a relatively common opinion. The R tends to understeer more with its heavier/ bulkier AWD system. For a quick, tossable car, the GTI is the way to go. But don't tune the GTI past ~300 hp without doing other stuff or you'll probably end up with torque steer
So since u have a engine tune and catback exhaust . You didn’t have the dsg tune ? If not did u come across any problems?
I love the fender setup. Im running apr stg 2 high output file, and it boogies. Stg 1 was def more low end and mid range, but the downpipe with stg 2 file opened up the top end like crazy.
How many clutches have you replaced since installing the various tunes? Will VW honor their factory warranty when any failure is deemed "related?"
Of course you realize that any "tune" will greatly exacerbate the EA888's carbon buildup issues (valves and chambers), in addition to requiring more frequent oil and filter changes while placing much greater loads on your transaxle, half shafts and CV joints.
I love it
Hey why did you go Unitronic and not APR? Doesn't APR give you more power on the lower end?
They all fry the factory clutch and void VWs warranty in cases where failures are deemed" related" to the various "tunes." So in that case you missed out on nothing.
Personally they are quick cars but i do hate how gutless they feel after 4500 rpm, personally until you tune the car they become a different animal
How did you get the performance pack without red badges? (I see you have forward and rear sensors which is only available on SE and Autobahn)
Where did you go for your tune ? I'm in Michigan too 😅
Eddie do you still have the S4?? I'm think of getting into a 16 would you recommend it??
The guy keeps saying "this is my daily." Does he own a weekend car too?
Probably not lol
Yes the saturn
I appreciate what you guys are trying to do by putting each voice in one side of the stereo, but as a headphones user, it's kind of annoying. just keep it mono
Curious on why driver preferred GTI vs A3? Got an A3 myself during Covid but never had the chance to test drive a GTI
Im guessing the gti is a couple hundred pounds lighter.
I really hope this guy did something more with the car. Tuned but stock height no wheels no nothing
And does he have different colored mirrors?
This is incorrect. The only performance difference the Autobahn has is adaptive chassis control. All cars in the MK7.5 lineup get what used to be the sport package on the MK7. All Mk7.5 GTIs get an LSD.
GTI Autobahn price is so close to the Golf R. As far as drivability, Golf R is a nice daily driver too with more features i.e. digital display and AWD. With stock GTI, traction is a challenge in some driving situations since it’s a FWD. Golf R’s AWD solves that issue.
the autobahn has digital display
America’s love numbers when it comes to horsepower, 220 it loads in the UK I make that shit fly
If you can make 220 fly, imagine what you can do with 420...
I've got a 2019 Rabbit DSG with 11K on it. Thinking about Stage 1+ and cat back exhaust. Dont wanna do intake, intercooler or downpipe yet. Will I be able to hang with stock Veloster N or Type-R?
Or a WRX or that matter.
Dude you definitely should have went for the Golf R if you spent all that on a GTI especially with AWD huge difference I owned both and still have my 2016 Golf R got for 25,555 with 18,000 miles
i know!! the stage 1 golf r numbers are freakin insane compared to the gti. and with the awd those things MOVE
A Uni stage 1 tune + some suspension mods here and there = a happy me in a reliable fun quick daily. MK7 Uni stage 1 here.
Considering going Stage 1+ Uni on my 2013 GTI MK6... still yet to decide
Def complaining about power Bc no manual. Not to be a supremacist but this car is 10x more fun with manual.
When you were stage 1 Cobb what were you peaking at?
I also tried a Cobb stage 1 tune but was pulling a ton of timing
Get the autobahn pack then you get the awsome seats not the ugly ones but don't get a sunroof vw still hasn't figured out to make a good seal or drain holes
how about driver mod and snow tires? took Team O'neil rally course, the GTI is a lot of fun in the snow, but winter tires are a must.
I got mk7 for 5 years, never had power problems, I can smoke you with my stage 2 like nothing 😂 same car different years and manual transmission 6 speeds
I like it x3,they way you say it. The car is on my radar, from Msejo in South Africa.Thanx
I want to race 1 of these gti's with my Honda Civic Si, a lot of VW Fanboys say I will get smoked but this Civic is really quick & (2904lbs) & I just have ktuner 17- 21lbs of boost with 3 available tunes on the fly & 2.5" exhaust, k&n drop-in. Honda cars are really quick, I don't kno what they do but they seem to be fast with less horsepower than most 🚗💨🌬️🌪️
Sorry to break it to you, but the gti will beat your si pretty badly. A tuned gti is fast! And as far as the Honda, they feel far than they are because of the gearing.
@@zohanjames7793 mine ran 14.1@100 mph 85°outside temp all season tires & k&n drop in ktuner 2.5" 21psi stock was 17psi. Still get 36mpg City & 75mph 42mpg very nice seats, keeps the family happy & I enjoy have fun with other like-minded ppl lil race. My car has done very well racing many cars & Civic seems 2 impress lots of ppl including me. I don't mind losing 1 bit. I have lots of fun that's just me tho. Sorry 4 long message. God bless you and your family stay safe with this coronavirus 🇺🇸👍🏻🇺🇸😎
@@honda116969 God bless you too! Was that on a stock tune? Regardless that is good!
@@zohanjames7793 ktuner just reflash. Lol. The tune made a big difference. Thank you bro take it easy 👍👍
what about fuel consumption compared to stock ?
Love my 7.5 golf R picked up mine used for a steal and the launch control i love it scaring the crap out of my passengers lol
Yeah it does
I’m thinking of trading in my 2013 GLI for a 2020 Golf R
Or a 2020 GLI. CAR AND DRIVER's recent "Lightning Lap" event reported that their current model GLI produced a faster lap time than their most recently tested Golf R.
Also, the Golf R uses VW's standard open front differential, while GTIs and GLIs use VW far more sophisticated VAQ differential, which is limited slip, torque vacating and fully lockable when conditions permit.
Factor in the Golf Rs heftier weight and essentially all of its "on paper" advantage disappears.
I traded my 13 GLI for a 19 Golf R. And I really miss my GLI manual transmission
Would you recommend coilovers if you are in Michigan and considering the potholes?
Aniket Borude absolutely brother
Golf R Quattro.
Aight we got a big brain car man that didn't totally just throw money at a car because he could.
Sorry Gys my VW Golf GTI MK 7.5 has visite ABT in Kempten 😇
And now he has 300PS/420+/+ NM and a lot of Fun😉👍👋
What you a talking about Stage one 🤔🤧
It's pretty damn sweet in my opinion.
Will adding stage 1 cuase more ware on my transmission
Aint no way this dudes saturn was faster then this mk7. My mk6 stock is pretty fast for a i4
Love my ‘18 GTI SE but the sunroof started an annoying creak after about 6 months. Sounds like styrofoam rubbing together when it’s closed. Anyone else experience this at all??
Check for moisture leaks next time there's any rain or you get the car washed. Just a thought.
I have had my sunroof replaced and it still rattles at times. From what VW has told me it is a defect in the design.
great video, but it's a mk 7.5 facelift, the headlights are different from mk7
You are correct, we state that a couple times and discuss why the owner chose to get a refreshed model
Are you guys twins? Both look like David So.
lol
That’s just racist
Ronnie Darko hahaha
Not much info given on the tune which is what the video is titled after.. Shame.
I can hear the bent wheels in this vid :( Hope their replacements are doing you well!
My 2nd trim mk7.5 GTI has digital display and 8-inch infotainment screen. Canada's options are a joke.
I test drove a GTI yesterday. Loved the inside but was not a fan of the power and its delivery as the guest said. For 36 grand, it isnt worth it for me.
bmx687 so get a used one. That’s what I did
@@sheldonm3535 Regardless, im speaking to the price of the car new. Brand new at 36k with that amount of performance? Just what are you paying for? 228hp for 36k? Dont get me wrong, i love the car - its very well rounded. But the price is unreal
@@bmx687 Do what the owner in the video did, and tune it.
@@aziz-qp7pm youre missing the point m8. 36k for a car with 228hp.
bmx687 GTI’s put down their crank power numbers to the wheels, so the GTI is more like 250hp/290tq, 14.0 at 100 mph in the 1/4 which makes more sense.
I agree 36k is a lot of coin, but, not much else out there weighs 3,000 lbs, nor has the ability to be tuned to 300hp/350tq for around $400-$600, plus the huge aftermarket tuning potential and the motor can handle it.
Try to find a ‘19 SE with the experience package, should be under $30k OTD, no need to buy the autobahn for $36k. Use the money left over and you could put the Golf R turbo (is38) on there and smoke most stock cars from a roll.
I have a 2009 GTi and I hate it I don't know what I can do to make it look more sick..... keep hearing this car is cute hate that shit I want it to look more agressive
He said everything is in the right place ...... nope ....no sir ...the usb port is in the center under the screen ,u gotta squezze ur fingers to connect a usb cable thats definielty a stupid place to put that
Dude, I only paid $30K for my fully loaded GTI Autobahn DSG. $36K??? Damn 😳
Did you buy it brand new? If so, what's the model year?
Yeah, poor negotiator for sure. I bought my 2019 White Silver GTI SE for $25,295. The first time I went in the dealership, the sales manager was was sticking to the MSRP of $34,035. I kept offering $25K. After 7 wks of back and forth (mostly them calling), we settled on on a price much closer to my liking. You cannot go into a shop desperate to have a car.
Best gti is the S, manual, no sunroof
How much does a stage 1 cost on the GTI ?
In europe a about 550€ so thats a about like 300-350usd
Was this a performance package
EQT over Unitronic and APR
Who.
MK7.5 GTI comes with the 7 speed DSG.
Chris Finton my mk7 is a 7speed dsg
Francisco, I’m referring to in the US since this video is a US car.
Chris Finton mine is a US model as well bro
Francisco, I could be wrong but I believe the MK7 had the DQ250 6 speed that the MK6 had. Then for 2019 the New MK7.5 got the DQ381 7 speed. I know the base Golfs had some kind of dry clutch 7 speed that the GTIs never got. But I could be wrong. Just glad I upgraded from my MK6 to MK7.5.
Chris Finton who knows bro idk much of all that i just know mine has the 7spd and thats a big ass upgrade man i wish i knew about the 7.5
What job do you have?
I run marketing and sales for Nostrum High Performance and I make youtube videos
Bro complains about a car HE bought and says it’s “ok” with a 36k price tag…News flash, get a manual transmission if you want more responsiveness.
Has it been reliable? Also does the engine need internal upgrade.
Yes they’re reliable even when modded, engine doesn’t need any internal work till over 450whp maybe even 500whp not 100 percent sure.
6:30, does he know that a “base” golf r has everything that a autobahn gti has?...doesn’t sound like he actually did his research
No sunroof 😄
shooter813 touché
The R doesn't have a base trim and my SE has limited slip
The golf R is not as nimble? It would demolish, a gti around any track and can handle a normal snow fall. Idk what makes you think the gti FWD car is ore bible then the same car, that’s AWD.
A Saturn! either he is humble person or has no pride 🤣💥
SE does have the R brakes and the limited slip dif
Oh shit thats the huron river isn't it. Sort of surreal to see the roads near me be driven lol
Can’t get 93 in Michigan? It’s everywhere
I wonder how a TT would do with a stage 1 tune
Just got a 2020 gti and I also live in Michigan looks like Kensington park!
