This is one of the most realest videos I have seen. I grew up poor, I hated that people looked down on my family. I started a business, made a success of it (at high school). Still not happy. Maybe I worked too hard? I took 18 months out to travel the world. Amazing... but got home feel into serious depression. Maybe I need a degree? I got accepted to do my MBA without an undergrad (on entrepreneurial merit). Felt great, but I felt unhappy after it was over. Maybe a big house, a Jaguar E-type, etc etc... Now, I bought a 2 bed apartment, I have a corporate job, a daily routine - my life is boring as hell. And I have never been happier. I go gym each day at lunch (a short walk), I see friends every weekend, and live super simple. I eat healthy, no parties. People laugh how I went from wanting 'it all' to the way I live now... I would say, try a simple life.
Life WAS simple. It no longer is. While old people advise still has a kernel of truth to it, our world now is much more different than what it was fifty, or heck, even ten years ago.

Im also going to Japan in october, 26th of oct to 11 of nov. Also learning a little of Japanese and to enjoy the trip im preparing myself phisically, mentally and emotionally. I want to be able to focus on the moment so i can enjoy it, be able to walk absurd distances without feeling like trash and to be happy so i can be outgoing and meet people.

Great video Cole, I'm a photographer and had my share of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome ) moments - but at the grand old age of 66 I've realised that a new Fujifilm 100mp camera and a suite of lenses at over $20,000 will not make me happy , will not even take better pictures than my old Canon DSLR - all it does is make me poorer , more fearful of losing, damaging the gear and that pictures of my wife and kids and my grandkids with their grandpa are worth a thousand arty pics
You can't tell a 15-year-old kid to 'smell the plants' and expect that to make him happy because they are at different times of their lives and thus value different things. Old people value simplicity because of the limitations of their bodies, the time they have left, the lessons they have learned, or all three combined. Wisdom cannot be taught; it has to be earned. The old and wise obtained their wisdom by being young and foolish. Therefore, I'd never take advice from an 80-year-old because I'm precisely not an 80-year-old, and I still have my lessons to learn and battles to fight. Perhaps smelling flowers becomes the most important thing to me when I'm older, but right now, as a 40-year-old, I still have other things I need to do. That said, I'm sure I'll start sounding like an 80-year-old if I was diagnosed with terminal cancer tomorrow. Life is NOT simple at all ages, even though it tends towards simplicity as we age. Young people are insecure and uncertain of themselves, which is entirely normal. Older people are secure and have seen and done it all. It's just time. Just keep taking your next breath and walking your next step. With any luck, the flowers in your garden suddenly feel profound and meaningful.
Cole I just have to say this video really really resonated with me. I've been having the same problem about overcommitting to a bunch of stuff at the beginning of the year, thinking it will make me happier and more fulfilled if I only keep on grinding and grinding. My schedule was overfilled with activity, I had no room to breathe, to just think or be, nevertheless commit to just improving one facet of my life and getting fulfillment out of it. Then the constant comparing on social media made me think I'm really missing out all the time if I don't have all these things that people show on Instagram and all that stuff. Needless to say, it took me months to realize this isn't going to lead nowhere and thus I slowly began to let go of all these dumb commitments, hobbies, activities that I was involved in, decluttering my life of all this nonsense that I foresaw will do absolutely nothing for me in the long run. Now I'm actually feeling much more relaxed and at peace, while still working on some things that I wish to be working on, with even greater focus, and with newfound understanding that you have to develop things one by one, slowly, consistently, and with the insight that valuable things take a long time to develop. And then you release this video: it's like the universe pushed it right into my feed! I don't really watch all these countless self-help videos anymore as I am more focused on actually practicing what I have learned from them, but yours always have a unique quirk to them that make me resonate with your message and your content each and every single time. I appreciate your hard work.
I am 49 years old. I feel like I can't even function in life anymore....and you know what? I don't really care. Life is not what society thinks it should be.....life is what you believe it is.
This makes sense. I was trying to think of what I need to do to make myself happier. This video makes a lot of sense to me. All my worry does give me anything good in return. If I put that energy to doing good for myself (my own self defined version of that.) then I’ll have a better future even if it’s not exactly what I expect I feel it will actually be better because how can you make your life worse if you actually make your life better every day?

The ADHD thing is very true. My dad had a similar learning defect as a kid and he told me that when he was a kid it was an embarrassment for his parents to put him on it. Because then people thought the kids just wanted attention.
Thank you. I have been unconsciously doing this for years, especially when i was taking my post graduate studies.😅. What happened was that while i am taking my posy graduate, my classmates are all cramming about our assignments while i was thinking of what to do with my diploma in the future. I was just doing the things that i am required. If it goes out right, then good. If not, I’ll ask to correct it. Years later I graduated like the rest of them with less stress.
Things do change, but at the same time, they don’t. I think we are HYPER FOCUSED with putting everything in a box. Y’all gonna learn REAL SOON, real life, real people, are not like TH-cam videos tell you. A cultural shift is coming, life was not meant to be like this, and people are pushing back.
I guess sometimes the answer is really straightforward. An example is that sometimes people get really mad and argue. But all they have to do to stop arguing is knowing that everyone is brought up in different families despite living in an overall similar society. Knowing that makes it so much easier to understand why people don’t agree with each other. But I guess people don’t really think that through because it feels much better to win an argument sadly.
I honestly never thought about this. I know that may seem stupid but I truthfully wake up on a day basis and thank God that I woke up and then just not enjoy it. I am always thinking about what I need to do or the future and it makes me think about why I always talk so fast and never make eye contact because I dont enjoy the little moments... Trying to categorize boomers like this seems wrong... There are some very wise ones out there who will give this advice but they are few and far between. Mostly, the categorical boomer advice is to suck it up and work harder. They think their success was the product of their efforts and don't see the difference in this world that the very same capitalist system has created. They also don't see the sheer poverty and depravity that their lifestyle led to in all the other parts of the world. They aren't usually very good at looking at a process and interpolating where it will lead. They can't understand why Gen Z and millennials look at the system and see it is never going to work out well for us if we don't change it entirely. I'd love to have elders and be able to respect their advice, but first they have to demonstrate that they are critical thinkers and not just telling me something that makes no sense in the modern world

Over watching your videos, I have realized that you have been keep going back and forth in a spectrum which has the 2 opposite ends. In one end of this spectrum lies living life with reason, and in the other end lies living life with emotions. Basicly, what I am trying to tell is that you are in a constant gravity field of attraction from trusting your gut or trusting your mind. This battle of these two main sides which you have been documenting creates a fundamental question to life: How to manage the reason and the emotion to have a satisfactory life? I believe Marcus Aurelius's had a great answer to this. His answer was about creating a perfectly balanced middle in the spectrum that i was mentioning where you can draw the most benefit from.

I started riding/Snowboarding at 14 and I have carried those hobbies well into my life spending money on trips, gear, and even the racing events to watch. Right now, i need/want a truck to load my bike and go ride with friends and family. I have a GoPro so I’ll post clips but you know what it’s better to post because those are memories you can rewatch and proof of fun having was there! But once I get that truck i will feel free but when all of the things i have are paid off… then i will be truly free!

"Life is simple" Meanwhile i spent 4 hours yesterday trying to apply for rent on a house and spent the entire time downloading random barely functional apps, replying to verification emails with links leading nowhere and trying to prove to the rental company that yes, i actually have a job and make enough money. And still i didn't get the house because over 450 people replied to it. If your 80 then yes life WAS simple because back then you could just talk to the person that owned the house and close the deal right there. We can't get around it, technology has failed it's purpose, instead of making life easier, it has made it infinitely more difficult and frustrating to a point most people my age just give up. And i'm very close to that point. Why bother when literally everything is a struggle that leads to no reward, costs tons of energy, and actively frustrates the shit out of you.

I've been having the same problem about overcommitting to a bunch of stuff at the beginning of the year, thinking it will make me happier and more fulfilled if I only keep on grinding and grinding. My schedule was overfilled with activity, I had no room to breathe, to just think or be, nevertheless commit to just improving one facet of my life and getting fulfillment out of it. Then the constant comparing on social media made me think I'm really missing out all the time if I don't have all these things that people show on Instagram and all that stuff. Needless to say, it took me months to realize this isn't going to lead nowhere and thus I slowly began to let go of all these dumb commitments, hobbies, activities that I was involved in, decluttering my life of all this nonsense that I foresaw will do absolutely nothing for me in the long run. Now I'm actually feeling much more relaxed and at peace, while still working on some things that I wish to be working on, with even greater focus, and with newfound understanding that you have to develop things one by one, slowly, consistently, and with the insight that valuable things take a long time to develop.
And then you release this video: it's like the universe pushed it right into my feed! I don't really watch all these countless self-help videos anymore as I am more focused on actually practicing what I have learned from them, but yours always have a unique quirk to them that make me resonate with your message and your content each and every single time. I appreciate your hard work.

The ADHD thing is very true. My dad had a similar learning defect as a kid and he told me that when he was a kid it was an embarrassment for his parents to put him on it. Because then people thought the kids just wanted attention.
Thank you. I have been unconsciously doing this for years, especially when i was taking my post graduate studies.😅. What happened was that while i am taking my posy graduate, my classmates are all cramming about our assignments while i was thinking of what to do with my diploma in the future. I was just doing the things that i am required. If it goes out right, then good. If not, I’ll ask to correct it. Years later I graduated like the rest of them with less stress.
Things do change, but at the same time, they don’t.

I guess sometimes the answer is really straightforward. An example is that sometimes people get really mad and argue. But all they have to do to stop arguing is knowing that everyone is brought up in different families despite living in an overall similar society. Knowing that makes it so much easier to understand why people don’t agree with each other. But I guess people don’t really think that through because it feels much better to win an argument sadly.

I honestly never thought about this. I know that may seem stupid but I truthfully wake up on a day basis and thank God that I woke up and then just not enjoy it. I am always thinking about what I need to do or the future and it makes me think about why I always talk so fast and never make eye contact because I dont enjoy the little moments... I overthink so much and it is really hard not to ,but this video makes me think that I am only this age for a moment and going slow in life is going fast... thank you !

There are some very wise ones out there who will give this advice but they are few and far between.
Mostly, the categorical boomer advice is to suck it up and work harder.
They think their success was the product of their efforts and don't see the difference in this world that the very same capitalist system has created.
They also don't see the sheer poverty and depravity that their lifestyle led to in all the other parts of the world.
They aren't usually very good at looking at a process and interpolating where it will lead.
They can't understand why Gen Z and millennials look at the system and see it is never going to work out well for us if we don't change it entirely.
I'd love to have elders and be able to respect their advice, but first they have to demonstrate that they are critical thinkers and not just telling me something that makes no sense in the modern world

Over watching your videos, I have realized that you have been keep going back and forth in a spectrum which has the 2 opposite ends. In one end of this spectrum lies living life with reason, and in the other end lies living life with emotions. Basicly, what I am trying to tell is that you are in a constant gravity field of attraction from trusting your gut or trusting your mind. This battle of these two main sides which you have been documenting creates a fundamental question to life: How to manage the reason and the emotion to have a satisfactory life? I believe Marcus Aurelius's had a great answer to this. His answer was about creating a perfectly balanced middle in the spectrum that i was mentioning where you can draw the most benefit from.

12:28 🤫 That dream is over but it’s okay. Im almost done paying off my bike i financed it when I was 20. I started riding/Snowboarding at 14 and I have carried those hobbies well into my life spending money on trips, gear, and even the racing events to watch.
Right now, i need/want a truck to load my bike and go ride with friends and family. I have a GoPro so I’ll post clips but you know what it’s better to post because those are memories you can rewatch and proof of fun having was there!
But once I get that truck i will feel free but when all of the things i have are paid off… then i will be truly free!

Meanwhile i spent 4 hours yesterday trying to apply for rent on a house and spent the entire time downloading random barely functional apps, replying to verification emails with links leading nowhere and trying to prove to the rental company that yes, i actually have a job and make enough money.
And still i didn't get the house because over 450 people replied to it.
If your 80 then yes life WAS simple because back then you could just talk to the person that owned the house and close the deal right there.
We can't get around it, technology has failed it's purpose, instead of making life easier, it has made it infinitely more difficult and frustrating to a point most people my age just give up. And i'm very close to that point. Why bother when literally everything is a struggle that leads to no reward, costs tons of energy, and actively frustrates the shit out of you.

Put the phone down, turn the TV off, put the video games away and reach for simpler forms of stimuli (books, manga, whatever is appealing in that realm). Life moves fast, but on some level a lot of us are also hesitant to embrace minimalism in the methods that we can control.
