My local discount store has an array of great stuff for the hobby, from spacle and grout/adhesive for gluing foam and filling gaps in diy terrain to lolipop sticks and toothpicks for perfect scale fences and bridges, they really are a gold mine for hobby materials, and of course lets not forget the best hobby invention ever, double sided foam tape!

I've been using Poundland's No More Nails to base my scenery (you need a mastic gun, another £1.00 ) Before it dries I add whatever sand/gravel/baking soda combi I'm going with and it sticks to it nicely. Another £1.00 find is budgie sand and grit from Wilko, 500g bags. For washes I sometimes go with liquid shoe polish (black and brown) which is available in Poundland and many other stores stock their own brand for a comparable price, or you can go with Kiwi which will set you back a bit more.

Using cheap picture frames for small dioramas is a great idea. Especially for gifts to friends.
Also like the trays, would need to check if any of the local cheap item shops has something similar.

Yeah unfortunately not all cheap shops have the silicon spot treys but they will all be slightly different for example mine had no treys but packs of 50 brushes going really cheap. It’s all just where you look really.

Something surprisingly hobby-handy from pound shops; Lights! You can easily buy clusters of several sub-par LED lamps in order to get dim backing lighting for atmospheric model photos. There is also the classic Tea Lights + Cotton Wool Balls + Black Spray = Light up explosion markers, too.

The Works & Bargain Books is also good for flat brushes for dry brushing or painting larger items or terrain. You will also find paint palettes in different sizes, & palette knives in metal and plastic + One liter of pva glue.

That's where I got my oil paints to give them a go on some test models. Few pounds for the paints, a palette and some synthetic brushes. All I needed to give it a go. I'm going to have to pop in again and see if there are some palette knives in.

One thing I like to get from my 1€ stores are decorative rocks and beads and the likes. You know, the plastic jars full of small pebbles that you can buy to make decorative ground for, like, bathroom plants and little pebble gardens and the likes. One jar for like two bucks gives enough decorative little rocks that I can sprinkle over some spackle/texture paste which will probably last me a lifetime.

Home bargains do baking trays for 99p I use the with magnets on the bottom of all my models. With a bit of effort you can either create a way to stack them up or put them in a box just a bit bigger than a4 and you don't have to worry about them falling over unless you drop them from a reasonable hight. If you use mounting tape to stick them in the boxes then you can if you really wanted to and the magnets are strong enough turn them upside down and back without a problem ( I don't recommend this unless you are crazy like me and I turned a tray over with a metal dreadnought that was stuck to the base via 2 magnets and the base had another 2 in it. So it can be detached if I want to use it for 2nd edition where the base is not needed.)

In the UK, the Works is great for cheap hobby finds. They have tons of budget craft supplies. I use my fancy W&N Series 7 brushes for detail work, but most of my mini painting is done with £2 multipack brushes.

If I might just add, those types of oil not to be snobby but cheap oils. Can have a high amount of oil and tend to dry shiney, so stick em on some cardboard over night. If doing something where that matters at least. Oh and people do check out, tk maxx, home sense and the range also for bargains.

Sadly my local pound chain doesn't have a very good online listing of their exclusive crafting items as I have found jars of glass aquarium gravel in all kinds of colours that would be instant crystal formations for bases, more kinds of glitter then I can count, but probably the most interesting thing I found is one inch wide rolls of rhinestone mesh. You just unroll it and cut it to length, one of the rolls I found just happens to have square pyramidal shapes that look like they would work for those reactive armor panels you see on some modern tanks.

It's not as good as Geek Gaming scenics base ready, but from the pound shop you can buy broom heads and coir mats for your grasses and reeds. Kitty litter and vermiculite for your ground covers. 2-part epoxy for water effects. Put it all together and it will look shite, but very cheap!

For much of my painting, I use cheap brushes from the dollar store. They wear out and become bent at the end after a while, but they're effective while they last. (Also, the bent ones can still be used for some painting tasks, like blocking out colors; in some ways, the bend actually helps getting into hard to reach places).

    - Flower pot sand / ballast
    - Toy spiders for kit bashing
    - crap toys and water pistols for Sci Fi terrain
    - Halloween skulls
    - Foam board
    - ‘Totally Awesome’ cleaner good for stripping g models.
    - 6 sided dice
    - cups for mixing
    - brushes for terrain
    - Tupperware to make a wet pallet!

Wouldn't use the cheap acrylic paints for painting minis (that's an exercise in frustration), but they're good enough for terrain, and yes, the kind of stuff i've seen people kitbash out of pound shop supplies is mind-bending :D

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I use craft paints for my minis (they're cheap minis, so I don't feel bad). Not the acrylics from the dollar store, no, I'm not insane. The slightly pricier kind from the hobby store. They're pretty thick and low in pigments, so getting them to work is indeed a challenge. You're constantly wrestling with thinning it enough that it can be layered, but not so thin it becomes uncontrollable.
But you CAN use it. I wouldn't blame anyone for just springing for good model paints, though.

    • @jherazob
      @jherazob 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

One thing I don't see mentioned much are stainless steel condiment cups, like you might get a dipping sauce in at a restaurant. I got a pack of 8, 45mm tall cups for around $10 and I use them constantly. They're really versatile.
They make surprisingly ergonomic paint handles, can keep small parts safe and organized during assembly, make great mixing cups or dip bins for basing materials, etc., etc. Because they're stainless, you can clean almost anything off them easily, and can reach for the Barkeeper's Friend in the worst of cases. They nest almost completely, so the few that aren't filling various roles around my work area pack away really small.
Another handy piece of sub-$10 kit is a small ceramic palette. This isn't really an "outside the box" suggestion, but I don't usually see them marketed to model painters. Dried paints come off of these much more easily than plastic, and even more easily than metal in my experience. They're great for any metallics, particulate mediums, inks, etc. that you don't want to risk contaminating your wet palette sponge, or anything else you'd use a palette for. Most designs have multiple wide wells, which make them great for mixing, etc.

    - Packs of mini plastic toothpick/flossers- good for lots of uniform spikes and the other end can be used for other stuff like basing details
-Pipe cleaners , twist them together, twist off some branches/roots then heatgun/hairdryer/lighter melts all the fibres and makes a dead tree

Cheap super glue is great for scenic work. It does the job and you don't waste your expensive stuff. I use it one bases where I'm doing a lot of rubble, etc that might fall off or get knocked off while gaming. I cover it in cheap super glue (then paint it) and it ends up rock hard and holds up well to gaming.

It can be a bit hit and miss as to what they have in on any particular day (like most discount stores) but it’s one of those places where it is physically impossible to only buy the one thing that you went in for.

I have a three stage process for my cleaning. I leave the print on the build plate for all three. After the majority of the resin has dripped off after printing, I attach the Elegoo wash and cure adapter to the build plate and dip the print and plate in my 'dirty' isopropyl alcohol bucket. Use a toothbrush to gently clean away any film or goopy bits, dunk, clean, dunk until it's basically clean. Then hang it in the cleaner bucket and run the machine for 1m:30s. After that finishes I let as much of the dirty iso drip off before take it over to the 'clean' iso bucket for a few dips and final checks with a clean toothbrush. Lastly, I wash off the iso in my 'dirty water' bucket and use a clean toothbrush if I notice any final bits.
After that, I'm free to scrape off the print before putting it in the curing station. I can clean an entire build plate in under a minute if I skip the wash stage of the machine and just dip/brush/dip/brush on simple parts.

Cheap make up brushes are really nice for sweeping plastic shavings off minis after you clean up mould lines. Maybe it's just super obvious but I have seen these brushes recommended in a couple of videos, but no mention of this use :)

I visited the cheap-ass store just this week to pick up low priced stuff in my hobby projects. I do have to say though that there are hits and misses in what I bought:
Brushes: bought a set of small cheap brushes. In the store I had to pick up several packs before finding one where the points were not crooked. I do assume that they will not last long, but as I mostly intend to use them for finer details on terrain and not on actual mini's it should be fine.
Acrylic paint: for me this was a total miss. I bought a package of 36 paints, touting to have 'Artist Quality'. Alas the paint comes out pretty thick, yet the tiniest amount of water seems dilutes the paint to the quality of a wash. (as you can imagine, this means the coverage is virtually non existent)
Sharp heavy duty hobby knife: I think this is my best buy. The knife is foldable on top of that the blade has an extra protective cover. It comes with 5 spare blades and you can put it in 2 stands (fully folded out and 45 degree fold. I the brand is 'Werckmann' which I personally didn't know before but I do have to say I like the quality.
White primer and varnish: The primer (brand is 'Spectrum') is quite OK. I even used it on my miniatures. It covers well enough without being thick. The varnish of the same brand I am less happy about. I varnished two mini's and somehow the clear varnish matted the colors making the shiny gold of my stormcast read as dull?
Double sided tape and paper tape: just really usable for so many things (as demonstrated in this video)
Hobby mat: My cheap store also has A2 sized (or close) hobby mats. cheap and easy to put on the table to protect it.
Spray can: I also found a spray can which was actually intended to be used for cleaning the house. It is however very serviceable to spray diluted PVA glue. Bonus: It came with microfiber rags which are just handy around the house :p
On top of all that bought some other random crap and then the best part ... my spending spree cost all together around 20 euro. When buying stuff at the 'dollar' store though, I would advise you always to first test it out before using it in an actual project.

I often use the pound shop primer, black and white spraycans, there's always a good haul to be had of random goodies in the pound shop!

The make up brushes are really great for drybrushing, some effects are similar to the airbrush, expecially on the bases

Poundland multi compartment organiser boxes are great. I found the artist acrylic tubes were a bit hit and miss in terms of coverage so will probably stick with Wilko tester pots! Charity shops are an ideal source of even cheaper picture frames and also old toys that can yield useful scenic bits.

Baking soda, add it on superglue and it hardens almost instantly. Great for assembling, repairing, and filling in gaps. Costs almost nothing.

Those oil paints is a great place to start if one is curious of the phenomenon. Getting into Artist oil paints can be rather costly, I just "accidently" bought a 37ml tube for 35£...

£35? Argggh! That’s Sweden for you, lol.
Are there any ‘pound shops’ in Sweden? I guess they might be called 10 Kronor stores?

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures ปีที่แล้ว

@@sirrathersplendid4825 hah, yeah there's cheap stuff too. The thing with artist grade paints is they price the paint after the cost of the pigment, so some are cheap, others can be expensive. If one is not paying attention, things can hurt the wallet.

Totally agree with the cheap oil paints. I got a set of them from The Works here in the UK and they only cost me a couple of quid. I've not used them too often yet but they do an alright job for making washes.
