I’m not a designer, yet I learned a lot from this video (text, shapes, vector objects/curves, groups, nodes, grouping, outlines, layer effects, warps, etc.). Hope I can learn some more from the Masterclass. Thanks Nick for such good work teaching this stuff!
Super cool tutorial! I'm an Adobe veteran since '94 and just moved to Affinity yesterday! Your tutorials are just what I'm looking for. Thank you for what you do!
I am so very grateful for your tutorials, Nick. Few Affinity Designer video producers can hold a candle to your clean, clear presentation and easy manner! You don't hum and haw, mumble, backpedal, or obscure the project in any way. Keep up the superb work.
I just spent the last hour and a half to do something like this on Affinity Photo V2. Several features either dont exist on photo or have a whole different process to find the same tool. I finally got my design looking like what you have, and though it wasn't done in the exact same way, I am very proud that it looks pretty much identical to what you have. I need to invest in the vector version of affinity hahahah
These are powerful tools that are forcing me jump off my perpetual licensed install of Illustrator CS6 to have more power and creativity with my vector art. The features in Affinity Designer 2 are helping me to move along in my software transition.
Thanks for the video. Two things to note: 1. The video says to use the text tool. Note there are two kinds; Artistic Text and Frame Text. This video uses Artistic. 2. The video says it recommends a serif font yet the example uses a sans serif font. Microgramma is a sans serif example and, say, Baskerville would be a serif example. For me, it's easier to simply type in a font size. Don't have to worry about aspect ratio that way. Also my personal preference is to use a whole number font size not something like 183.9.
Thanks for this, many things in this video will help me with other projects im working on, specifically the key shortcuts. i only memorized like 2 so far lol so this helped show me more. i watched this video 3 times and followed along and got it just like yours each time so i think i'm good now! learned a lot, thanks!
This was a genuinely brill video! Thank you so much. I'm using the OG Affinity Designer but this still worked well for me (With one or two layout differences). I've had Affinity for yeeeeears but seldom use it but I figured I needed to do something with it on a recent gig I had and this video helped me so much to nail what I wanted to do.
WOW, this was awesome. I know if I had to try it myself it would take a long time but you certainly showed all the steps and gave explanation so I'm sure I could do it. I'm new to Affinity and was actually searching if it's possible to have text (not hand lettering) follow grids. If so, would this be in your Masterclass?
@@YanksandBritsProductions I think it is really great program but I am new to this. The learning curve seems to be a lot better than some of the other programs I have tried. You can't beat the price for what you get in my opinion.
@@YanksandBritsProductions I wish I could you decide. I am very new to this. I bought designer only because Photo didn't offer any benefit for me, I don't think. I may regret that later. I also can't speak to licensing as the few designs I have are my own. I figured at that price compared to a monthly subscription as most others are, I couldn't go wrong even if I just used it a few times a month. Sorry I can't help more.
When clicking Convert to Curves on the Arc warp effect, it doesn't look the same as when the effect was live. If you look closely, most of the curved lines get set back to straight ones. (Although in this video it looks fine, mine is v2.5.5). It's causing issues later on when applying the miter contour, as the contours for each letter overlap and stick out because they're not following a curve. EDIT: Turns out there are a lot of bugs with warping in version 2.5 onwards. A post said to use 2.4.2, so I did, and now it all works fine, things curve as they should. (And I thought switching from Inkscape would mean less bugs!)
Hope you're still enjoying the sun. Quick question..... when i took my work to the right side of the work page it disappeared, but yours didn't, how can i make mine do that so i can work in all of my available area? Thanks in advance.....
Hi NIck :) Super thanks for the tutorial, well done! at 06:44 you are using subtract operation, do you think setting the curved white text layer to 'erase' blend mode would achieve the same result? thanks
It's Command J. You might've missed a step along the way. This feature can be tricky. The two movements in order: 1.) Duplicate and move down, 2.) Scale down from the top node. It's important not to deselect the object at any point or else the order of transformations gets messed up and it won't work. Try replicating exactly what I did in the video, click for click.
This is a cool tutorial, but I am still disappointed the developers ditched 'Instant 3D' which was so quick, simple, flexible and useful in the legacy software.
As a Affinity Design / Photo user I wonder if upgrading to v2 is worth it? I don't do very advanced stuff in designer, but it's my preferred tool to create stuff for stream overlays and youtube thumbnails.

Yeah, if you want to crash 13 times while trying to get through it. LOL But yeah, Coreldraw has the block shadow tool that is made for this specific look. Otherwise, Coreldraw is the most unstable and poor quality software I've used in my whole career. I started with Coreldraw in 1993. Its STILL a joke. My main software since around 2000 has been Illustrator, but Illustrator has some areas where it needs more development. So I bought a copy of Coreldraw Home & Student Edition. I began to use it. First 30 minutes, crash. Predictably. Expectedly. Next time I open it, crash again. I began to set up all my old keyboard shortcuts that I used from before in Coreldraw. This one shortcut I had which allows me to increase the size of text. I used it for years in Coreldraw. I set it up. It worked. No problem there. I come back to the software the next day. I use the shortcut. The software freezes, then disappears off the screen. Crash! I also had subscribed to the latest Coreldraw before that. I had it for 2 days and it crashed twice in the 1 hour that I merely messed around with it. I cancelled my subscription on it and I officially give up on Corel for life. They are never going to change. But, I figured even with the relentless crashing, I still could get some use out of it for the 1 time price I paid for it.
That's weird, perspective is curving M and N in very unnatural ugly way, which is not usable at all. Then ungrouping is literally deleting the effects (arc/perspective). The contour tool is doing blank opened spots, above the letters, can't make a proper outline with it, because they're open above. Literally was trying to do it 3 times, and every time the same happens.
@@juzeljames7793 No, it looks precisely the same on Coreldraw. I just did it on my copy of Coreldraw Home and Student Edition. Looks perfectly the same.
