He came to our house to buy a guitar from my brother. All smiles and kindness. I think he is actually 5-6 in height. Inside our front door standing in the living room, he gave the impression of being a giant. Just radiated with power and good vibes. Coolest 3 minutes of my life.
I first saw them perform live at the Indianapolis Rock Festival in 1971. I was so impressed. Little did I know I would see Phil perform dozens times now that Phil and I now share the same master.
Agreed. But just listen to him now. Phil never stops writing songs. Please show me a guitar player that has been writing his own songs for the past 35 years. When he surrendered his heart to the lord, a birth of a passion of song writing was born. His stuff is awesome and always has been.
Yeah, you're right, it is! I've always wondered why they didn't use this on any of their album releases -- it definitely had the potential to be a radio hit.
I saw this performance on WVIZ Channel 25, Clev Ohio I think around 1970-71'. If my memory serves me, it telecast just before Raspberries HIT. I just freakin' because I never thought Id every see this again. There is a whole show somewhere...atleast 60min+ worth of performance. This is very cool.
Very cool video I have the liveat carnegie hall cd recommend it to everyone PHIL KEAGGY WAS THE BEST he's pretty good now also. Glass Harp was from Youngstown Ohio
@HoweKathandKeaggy it would be so hard for one of the top 2 or 3 guitarists in the universe to be so humble, but phil is a true gentleman.thus adding to his out of this world awesomeness.i just don't understand how you can play for so long and never hit the same note.it's like a new chord structure has been invented,i'm just totally blowed away.
The song is "Never Is A Long Time" from their second album called "Synergy". The CD is available thru a company in Germany. But to really blow your mind, order the Live Glass Harp at Carnegie Hall CD from Amazon. I think this video is really from around 1970. And you're right, nobody played like this back then.
I saw Glass Harp warm up for the KinKs at Ludlow Garage in Cincy, OH back in 1969. I sat on the floor in the front row and he blew me away back then. He looked like Paul McCartney but he played guitar better than anyone and I saw Hendrix as well. They're both geniuses.
He was pretty humble, and knew what good music was, so being a musical genius with a good ear it would surprise me more if Jimi didn't recognize talent in people like Phil, than if he did!!!
This Man Truly was the one of the greatest Guitarist of his time, " a Controversial thing to say" Every thing he did Was just so perfect but yet still seemed Spontaneous
I saw Glass Harp at the Cleveland stadium in 70 or so (actually outside of the stadium) Alice Cooper and Savage Grace played also. They played the Mentor Hullabaloo also I believe.
Holy crap. NOBODY was playing guitar like that in 72. Nobody. Not Beck, Page, Clapton not even dudes like John Mcloughlin. The control, speed and cleanness he had was non-existent in 72. amazing.
Keaggy is an animal with any guitar in his hand. Acoustic or electric. O_O I've been listening to "Acoustic Sketches" for years, but wow I had NO CLUE that he was THIS good on electric.
There are a few passages from Page's "Dazed and Confused" solos from '73 and onward that sounds like he could have been listening to Phil during that time.
The only person that played with this type of feeling during this era was Peter Green. Beck, Page, Clapton are not even in the same league as this guy. I think Phil could play with John McLaughlin or Al di Meola. I have seen them all and Phil is amazing!
i'm not sure what you mean by your comment, but i think i agree, at least in part. this was a great band to see at an outdoor venue though. they played in Indianapolis in.....maybe '72, i don't remember, but Keaggy blew everybody in the crowd away. i'll never forget that. he is in the Christian "bookstores" now and occasionally gets together with Glass Harp but they don't have the energy or "attack" that they used to.
there is an interview in the annals of Y103 cleveland with jimi hendrix. Jimi being asked "how does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world" replied "youll have to ask this guy from youngstown Ohio, phil keaggy"
where are you coming from? i live in their hometown, and just saw them this weekend, and phil is still everybit of the wild and innovative guitarist, and john seffara, ( the bassist here, however you spell his name) is still amazing...
@texocalitunes A) Yes, he can still pull off that style. Do a TH-cam search for "When Love Came to Town Keaggy Lang", Keaggy and Johnny Lang collaborating live on the U2 tune. The dueling solo at @3:00 is nice; check out Lang's face when he hears what Keaggy does. B) This Glass Harp clip was recorded before Keaggy was a Christian, if I'm not mistaken. C) The bass player is Danny Pecchio. But, yeah, he looks a little like Kenny Loggins, doesn't he?
Your point about guitarists using original material is a good one. Yes, his musical compositions, then and since, are good, and his acoustic playing is nearly unmatched (can you call it "acoustic" when he does all that looping?) But even now, as back then, he should find a good poet to write lyrics for him. About the only tune of his with compelling lyrics was the one his wife wrote for their son Ryan who died.
That's funny about the finger story. I get agitated when I read something regarding the Hendrix quote. But I did read in CCM magazine about an encounter Phil had with Ted Nugent. TN later went on record saying something like Keaggy could have saved the world with his guitar . . . or something like that.
manofthecloth I don't belive Hendrix said that only because I have heard other false comments about a Keaggy vs Hendrix guitar duel in which a frustrated Keaggy cut off his finger(he actually lost the finger in a childhood accident)! I have also never heard Phil mention meeting Hendrix! I guess you could ask the next time you see him as he is very friendly and easy to meet at his concerts!
It's always possible some of those things could have been said by Hendrix to a friend or bystander, not publicly... or not. When I think about it, I would find it pretty surprising if Hendrix NEVER said to anyone, "So-and-so is the best guitarist I've ever heard", or, "So-and-so is a better guitarist than I am", etc. And DEFINITELY, something like, "Oh man, so-and-so is just out of sight". It would be strange if he never said anything like that-the only question is TO who, and ABOUT who?!?! :O))
Really? 'cause it's been repeated alot. i wouldn't know but even the greatest like jimi draw inspiration from somewhere.... i mean it dosn't really matter they both are/were great. i saw Phil live lots of times and he truely is amazing and i do have some Glass Harp dated before '69. i appreciate your comments anyway.
One day back in the 1960's, Jimi Hendrix was interviewed by a newscaster and he asked Hendrix, "What's it like to be the greatest guitarist in the world?" Hendrix replied: "I don't know, you'l have to ask Phil Keaggy."
That story has about ten different versions, all with Hendrix naming a different guitar player. It never really happened, especially like that. Search “Jimi Hendrix on the Dick Cavett show,” on TH-cam. That’s where the story came from and can see for yourself what he says.
@Ryan Hatfield. Anytime is a good time! I did check him out, though. Pretty amazing. I really didn’t know anything about him, wow. And I’ve been playing guitar professionally for almost 60 years. Where have I been?!!!
@MrSambanine Yea, the Hendrix thing is definetly false. It wasn't too hard for most of us P.K. fans to believe when we all first heard it though. Certainly if nothing else, Hendrix would've been a fan of Phils had he had heard him, same as Phil always was of him. But I heard Hendrix actually had said that about Chicago's late great (can't think of his name) guitar player. But then who knows with this stuff. Hey, PSE&G? Never heard of them. Were they a good guitar band?
i think that it is amazing that phil is self taught.it's like he invented his own style.after almost 40 yrs of playing,it seems that he never plays the same lead break.how is that?get down with your bad self.
In Canada, its hard to find any of this stuff...when it comes to radio, we almost live in a police state up here. Everything is totally regulated and its only been in the last year or two that Christian radio was even allowed to broadcast, believe it or not! Its sad really
I saw him in Cinti at Eden Park , they opened for James Gang and Grand Funk , they blew them all away! Phil is the best!
went to high school with him. after all these years, he still amazes me
He came to our house to buy a guitar from my brother. All smiles and kindness. I think he is actually 5-6 in height. Inside our front door standing in the living room, he gave the impression of being a giant. Just radiated with power and good vibes. Coolest 3 minutes of my life.
Keaggy is both the best the guitarist and person I've ever had the pleasure of meeting
I first saw them perform live at the Indianapolis Rock Festival in 1971. I was so impressed. Little did I know I would see Phil perform dozens times now that Phil and I now share the same master.
Phil was just turning 21 when this was made. There was so much more in store for us, and for him. This is a remarkable memory.
Agreed. But just listen to him now. Phil never stops writing songs. Please show me a guitar player that has been writing his own songs for the past 35 years. When he surrendered his heart to the lord, a birth of a passion of song writing was born. His stuff is awesome and always has been.
Still love this track. The audio isn't terrific but the visuals and incredible guitar are worth watching repeatedly! What a treat! Takes me back, man!
Keaggy is simply blessed!! This outstanding level of talent is way above being 'Taught' by ant guitar teacher. He is the Master!
This is very cool.
i've never heard such tasty playing before. Amazing!!! Amen!
I was lucky to see Glass Harp hundreds of times in Warren,Youngstown and Kent at JB’s where we also the James Gang with Joe Walsh numerous times
Very, very, very funky rock and stellar guitar.
I've heard of it, but have never actually heard any of there music. So thanks, I will have to give it a listen.
Keaggy was so ahead of his time back then he is even better today
hippie music at its finest.........!!!
mind blowing stuff right there!
Just saw these guys last night. Quite a performance.
who wouldn't dig this shJt?.. i do.. can't believe I never heard phil keaggy before... my friend told to check this out.. im blown away... I dig it!
One of the best old time videos from Ohio! Phil is the greatest guitar player of all time.....even Jimi Hendrix thought he was better than himself.
Jimi was right
Holy Shnikey!! Talk about a blast from the past!!
The song is "Never Is A Long Time" from their second album called "Synergy". The CD is available thru a company in Germany. This is some bad ass fusion.
I saw Glass Harp at the Cleveland stadium in 70 or so (actually outside of the stadium) Alice Cooper and Savage Grace played also. They played the Mentor Hullabaloo also I believe.

Thank you for posting!
Some really good guitar playing there by Keaggy.
There are a few passages from Page's "Dazed and Confused" solos from '73 and onward that sounds like he could have been listening to Phil during that time.
I had heard that Glass Harp was recording their first album at Hendrix studio when Hendrix died.I can't hardly believe that they weren't acquainted.
The only person that played with this type of feeling during this era was Peter Green. Beck, Page, Clapton are not even in the same league as this guy. I think Phil could play with John McLaughlin or Al di Meola. I have seen them all and Phil is amazing!

it's "Love Divine" off of his Crimson and Blue album, and he does quote Cliffs of Dover during his solo - also the song is a remake of a Beatles Tune
Jimi hendrix of Christian rock, especially in the early days!!
I remember these days in Youngstown, OH!!!
there is an interview in the annals of Y103 cleveland with jimi hendrix. Jimi being asked "how does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world" replied "youll have to ask this guy from youngstown Ohio, phil keaggy"
One of those great 70's acts that never got their PROPs
Well said. His style makes me think of something Page or Hendrix might play, only cleaned and polished to lovely sheen.
where are you coming from? i live in their hometown, and just saw them this weekend, and phil is still everybit of the wild and innovative guitarist, and john seffara, ( the bassist here, however you spell his name) is still amazing...
Agree with thomashead - great band, but Phil is without question vocally superior. Superior in all other musical capacities as well.
Very well said!
The man can play.

He's an amazing guitarist- Sounds like Jeff beck here a bit.
c. Wired album.
@voxking23
I spent many a night at a club on Midlothian, called The Apartment, watching Left End, early '70s. Was that the re-built "Freak Out"?
yes on the Freak Out
That's funny about the finger story. I get agitated when I read something regarding the Hendrix quote. But I did read in CCM magazine about an encounter Phil had with Ted Nugent. TN later went on record saying something like Keaggy could have saved the world with his guitar . . . or something like that.
@sounddude51
Love Inn was my home church as a kid .. My step dad used to jam with Phil sometimes.
The bass player is Dan Pecchio!!!
groovy..... I can really dig it.
@manofthecloth613 Did Hendrix really say that? What a compliment.
The music is amazing.(Phil Keaggy always is) but I wish the vocals were louder.
better yet, wish there were NO vocals in this video
I know, but this was 35 years ago... heheh
keaggy is amazing, i don't get how he learned how ot do all that amazing stuff, i wish he would teach me
this appears to be where hendrix meets satriani and vai. great player and ahead of his time in some respects.
it is Never Is a Long Time.second track off synergy.i have the entire album on my account
brings back easier days
there you go, my bro
manofthecloth I don't belive Hendrix said that only because I have heard other false comments about a Keaggy vs Hendrix guitar duel in which a frustrated Keaggy cut off his finger(he actually lost the finger in a childhood accident)! yo austin was at that show at mayfield high--1971 maybe
This is Jesus music at its finest.
WOWZA!
I don't think Hendrix said it about anyone, but he did watch Rory at the Isle of White.
'Wight'
huh... He's gonna be playin at my church tonight.
That's Jerry Gaskill from King's X!!! :)
Love Phil...but who crocheted the tank top???
The 70s did.

The song is "Never in a Long Time"
The song is named " Forever is a Long Time."
thanks
THANKS SONIDOS3e!
I don't think anybody sold their musical ability short. From what I can tell, the band's weakness was its songwriting, particularly lyrics.
One day back in the 1960's, Jimi Hendrix was interviewed by a newscaster and he asked Hendrix,
"What's it like to be the greatest guitarist in the world?"
Hendrix replied: "I don't know, you'l have to ask Phil Keaggy."

@@larrypower8659 you replied to a comment I made 10 years ago. Lol
@Ryan Hatfield. Anytime is a good time! I did check him out, though. Pretty amazing. I really didn’t know anything about him, wow.
And I’ve been playing guitar professionally for almost 60 years. Where have I been?!!!
I love Hendrix and I love Keaggy, but Hendrix never said that Kyler. That's a long-standing legend.
@salivaty Could Satriani tries with one-finger less?...
@MrSambanine
Yea, the Hendrix thing is definetly false. It wasn't too hard for most of us P.K. fans to believe when we all first heard it though. Certainly if nothing else, Hendrix would've been a fan of Phils had he had heard him, same as Phil always was of him.

Hey, PSE&G? Never heard of them. Were they a good guitar band?
can someone tell me what this song is called ?, thanks.
how'd i never hear of this band???? what's the name of this song? and what year is this?
What?? No monsterous array of pedals and gadgets??? Just a perfect blend of a Les Paul, tiny Fender amp, and someone who knows how to use them.
I stand corrected.
i think that it is amazing that phil is self taught.it's like he invented his own style.after almost 40 yrs of playing,it seems that he never plays the same lead break.how is that?get down with your bad self.
I Agree. Like I said a controversial thing to say. Lets just say he was one of the more Underrated.
at 1:26 BROKEN STRING HANGING FROM HEADSTOCK
was?
keaggy is still fantastic!!
In Canada, its hard to find any of this stuff...when it comes to radio, we almost live in a police state up here. Everything is totally regulated and its only been in the last year or two that Christian radio was even allowed to broadcast, believe it or not! Its sad really
oh i kno its a legend, but its a fun story... every good band has their mythology :)
Anybody know the year of this Les Paul? Also is it a standard or deluxe?
AH BOI!!!!
02:27 - 2:31 - My God!
is that the bassist from Spinal Tap? :) j/k
does he break a guitar string at the end?
Wrong!! I love the idea that he would say that. But, years ago I discovered this to be legend. Keaggy substantially rocks though!!
wow, he's so clean too.
he is most of that, if not all of it. and thats a terrible thing to say about a person.
I know that, he is truly amazing. I was just making a point
Is this a Glass Harp original or a tribute?
Sounds alot like Funk 49 in the beginning.
sure do. what's your point?
