There is a part of me that says leave it alone and another part of me that says one needs to alter his wording and maybe even his ponderous style to reach a wider modern audience. However, I wouldn't want this to be an excuse to alter works like Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer where attitudes and language were of a time and place where we could look back and see the mentality of the time as Twain would have wanted it displayed.
