Your video are so great. You keep it simple. On dividers, as a machinist wanna be. There are 3 types. Inner, outer and regular. Anyway it is an old video but very informative.
I made myself a divider/compass several years ago from leaf spring steel. It was much more difficult to forge but the benefit was that it is as tough as nails, and maybe tougher. I never realized how useful it would be. Since it's high carbon steel, it scribes a fine line very nicely. Great vid!
I'm a little behind in watching the vid' s (because I 've my first paying customer) but..... I SPOTTED A GARGOYLE!!😀😀. Can't wait to see you make a pair of calipers, I definitely need one.
Looking back them Teachers taught disrepect and to question our V Nam vets . I"d question much of teachings back in schooling from Teachers whom got teaching on many popular colleges.Good day and try being nice.
You've explain who make and how to make devider. What are this dividers use for? Cause I made a mistake buying a compass with 2 steel tip, not a pencil on the other side. Sorry for my ignorance.
Its funny you posted this today just yesterday I was scouring TH-cam for hand forged compass videos and found only two that I feel were up to standards most of them are pretty lazily made. I would love to see your take on it
Thank u for the great Videos You mentioned the Used Tool Market, is there a specific site or place you look for used Black Smith Tools or Equipment. Thank u
Whats available seems different depending on your location. Blacksmith get togethers are the best. But auctions, estate sales and the internet are all good options
Hey John, can you link the video with Peter you're talking about? There's a video of him talking about compasses, but it contains no actual forging. TH-cam seems to have very little of Peter, there are some videos from PW and some from old episodes of The Woodright's Shop, but that's about it. Thanks
Haha "how you measure up" He who has the largest callipers wins? Then you corrected, "how your work measures up" Ok, I get it! I'm excited to see the caliper video. Right now I use the little flimsy one you tossed to the side. I admit I'm a beginner, so still building up my tools!
I'm surprised you didn't mention inside vs. outside dividers (or hermaphroditic calipers). As I didn't see a single pair of inside dividers in your collection, so I'm assuming that you don't have any significant use for them.
John, I'm very glad you made this all-encompassing video. We all need to know what divides us.
😂😂👍
and what encompasses us

I have a set of older Johnson and I keep them in my tool belt for work because it comes in handy for doing certain cut outs and stuff on the job

I left you a question about this on your Instagram page. Loved this video.
"…probably never need another set. I've got way more than I'll ever need." Translation: I'll only buy more if they're unique, or a good deal
Can't wait to see the video of making some calipers in the shop. I enjoy making my own tools and you always give me some great ideas thx
The cheap thin ones want leave a good mark like a good set will I've noticed
That Peter Ross made compass is a gem. Very nice. I would just look at it. Here in RSA we still call them a compass.

I knew if anyone saw him it would be you. 😀
I really like the Peter Ross set. I saw them up close in a different video. I think the one from the last conference pretty cool. Thx again....Paul
Nice collection of calipers. Indeed those compass' that Peter forged are nice.
Nice tools, John! Had to grab a kleenex to wipe the drool off my chin :)
Dave
It looked like that fly on his hand was really interested in what he was doing 🙂
How do you use a Starrett SNUG.
Thanks deeman
I was always taught a compass was like a divider but it held a pencil, lead or some thing else for drawing circles.
That is the common way to think of it today, but apparently it wasn't always the case.

Dividers or compasses with steel points are used exactly like one with a pencil. but they leave a more accurate scribe line.
Which tool marks aligns and measures

I plan on it soon

The video of Peter's that is mentioned is commercial and so costs a few $$, but is well worth it. I have it and consider it money well spent.
There is a link to the DVD in the video description
Haha

The dial calipers will do inside measurements. But I rarely have any need for typical blacksmithing.
I still don't know why I need it.
Every thing in blacksmithing has to be long to keep the heat away, you must have muscles like Popeye after he has eaten spinach.
This time I will do it manually with the help of woodprix plans designs.
Blah, blah, blah and here's your YT kudos
