When you spoke about taking Latin in High School in one of your older videos it really just reminded me how alien the culture of education in America has become in just your lifetime. I graduated in 2017 and the biggest shift I see when I look at the education of yesteryear and education now is that education today has abandoned literacy as being the foundation for all other learning. I would say over 3/4s of American education today is focused on teaching everything that is NOT how to read and write.
This is a travesty, because literacy has and always will be the distinguishing line between the educated and uneducated, going back to the birth of civilization and moving into the future no matter what some degree from a modern university says. With literacy you can learn anything, do anything, be anything. No wonder there are so many "educated" people today who have such a poor grasp of the English language and shake their fist at the world that they can't achieve success despite having one of those nice looking degrees. And I know this because I've taken college courses with these people and I've read their work. The ability of the average high school graduate to express themselves through the written word is infantile.
So I remain an uneducated literate that works on a fishing boat rather than join the hordes of educated illiterates 😂; make more money this way too, lol! Thanks for the great videos as always mrpete!

Yes, in the $0.50 sideshow, the hooded 'Moon Man' with a horrible skin condition would take off the hood for an extra .025 after those not paying left the tent. The saddest facial expression on a human anyone could ever have is what I got left with, along with with certainty that no matter the situation, it can always be worse. Around 1965ish.

Mr. Pete, you are a class act, here, as always. Your description of the carnival and "freak show" is very accurate -- just like I remember, and was worth the entire video. I too, learned about the hermaphrodite condition in an unusual way. It was rumored that a certain person in our small town was endowed with "both parts," and my curiosity began to soar. While I never met the individual in question, I did do as much study on the subject as I could, and gained a basic understanding of the "problem." Otherwise, the video was very good. I enjoy using my hermaph. caliper (bo't on E-bay) for various things. Keep informing AND entertaining us. You are loved and appreciated. Bob in Florida

Hi Mr. Pete, I normally use a hermaphrodite caliper on the lathe to make a mark on a spinning piece of round stock so that, I can turn up to a shoulder. When I first got out of high school, I got a job in a production sheet metal shop. I always had an interest in precision machining, though. I used to haunt the tool auctions on the weekends. I picked up a Brown & Sharpe hermaphrodite at one. I told my boss about it on Monday and he looked at me funny and chuckled inappropriately. I thought, "What's with this guy?" Well this guy was all about sex in every form you could imagine. So, I went home and looked up the word hermaphrodite and all became clear.

Hermaphrodite calipers are the cat's pajamas for doing rapid layout work at the bench. Placing the point in the etched mark of the desired dimension on the steel rule and pulling the leg up to the end of the rule allows you to set the caliper very quickly.
As Lyle demonstrates in the video, hermaphrodite calipers will quickly show an error when scribing a center line. If you have 2 parallel lines either the caliper was set incorrectly or the width of the work was not measured correctly.
    Cheers from NC/USA

I bought a thrown together lot of tools in a bag a few years ago... The total sum of one mans pride in a nasty bag. All tools are engraved Russell Odette in cursive. Inside where 3 Hermaphrodites plus everything a machinist circa 1945 would need, including a Aduels machinist and tool makers handy book. I've since cleaned all the tools, repaired the book as best I can and placed everything in a Sears machinist box. I use the book all the time, even just for twilight time reading.

Thanks Mr Pete. I know two men that are probably close to your age, when they were not quite 16, they went to the local circus and got in to the hoochie-coocchie show. The girls took a liking to the boys and let them hang around. It was the last day of the season and they were going back to Florida for the winter. They told the boys that they could run off with the circus and stay with them. The boys made it as far as North Carolina before their parents had the sheriff apprehend the boys and keep them in jail until they could pick them up.

I decided that I needed a hermaphrodite caliper a few years ago and purchased one like the smaller straight leg caliper you showed. I don't think I have actually used it except to try it out soon after acquiring it! I am about ten years your junior and never did see the side shows. I don't know if they were gone by the time I was old enough to attend carnivals or we were steered away from such entertainment by our parents. We lived far from town and didn't get to fairs or carnivals very often and were closely supervised.

I remember playing on some antique amusements at the shows (what we called the fair). They had Victorian games where you could win a cigarette or some gum. There was also a seaside amusement arcade which had been built in the 1920's and still had a few original fittings. There was an automata which consisted of a metal elephant moving, on tracks, through a jungle scene, collecting a box as it went. At the end it would tip out the box which had a cheap toy and a fortune. No hermaphrodites, just a monkey who you could get your photo taken with.

The etymology of words is something that's being lost. No one has any care to learn anything about the component languages that make up English. It's no wonder so many people these days are willing to accept the constant redefining of words to match whatever is ideologically compatible.

Words mean what we collectively decide they mean, and that meaning drifts over time. I know the French have very strong opinions about language purity, but English speaking countries generally don’t, we just let language change organically.

@@joshwalker5605 By this logic we can define any word to mean any thing; a dangerous proposition no doubt. This is the exact same dilemma that's encountered between consensus and the truth. The truth doesn't have to be popular to still be the truth, and freedom will never mean slavery, ignorance will never mean strength, and war will never mean peace no matter how many people you trick.
Try to apply your logic to any field that relies on precision, which consequently involves the precise use of language, and it falls apart. A typical liberal arts major response.

Just a question about some of your days in class. Did you ever notice a mystery where on one day you had a few pairs of dividers and a few pairs of calipers and on other days had the same number but all were hermaphrodite style?

Too many people abuse their Verniers as a substitute.

    • @componenx
      @componenx ปีที่แล้ว +2

I do that, but with a cheap Enco dial caliper I bought in '85. Funny thing is that it still works great (even though I reground the tips once), and has outlasted two other better ones that were never abused.

I have only heard them called Hermaphrodite Callipers by Americans, maybe it translates from other languages such as German as Hermaphrodite. Growing up in England I learned to use them and call them Odd leg callipers or "jenny" Leg callipers. I use them a lot in my work and it is possible to use them though measuring, this is where they come into their strength, Finding a centre line on a piece of work by setting up from either side or taking a measurement from one place or piece of stock and transferring it to another without the need to actually measure it can be very useful. In my 30 years of teaching though I found one of the things that really makes me cringe is seeing someone using a pair of Vernier callipers to mark parallel to an edge, when they should use some jenny legs! the abuse of a precision instrument makes me weep!

    • @mrpete222
