It's saddening, coming from a punk background knowing him not getting same acceptance from the punk scene compared to the rap scene. The punk scene was built off this odd ball personalities too. Which I can see where he gets it from. Especially in his generation. But I'm glad that in my generation we all have so much love for him ❤

I've got a bit more of a positive spin on it, at least for me. Watching Tom Morello, Greg Graffin and Henry Rollins all be a bit stuck up and dicks compared to Lars Fredrickson shifted how I viewed their bands years ago. I still like some of Black Flag, most of Rage and most of Bad Religions music but Rancid has become probably my favourite band. The more the years go by and the more you learn about bands and music the more it becomes very clear that Nardwuar's interviews do a great job of showcasing people and music you can really get behind that are genuine vs. some that you're a bit more careful with.
He's probably the best character barometer around. He gives off the impression of absolute clown the first time you see him, and within a minute you know he did his research and care way more about the artists story and history than anyone else they've probably ever been interviewed by. If you can't respect that and engage with him at all then you're either a very guarded person (Which happens) or just an asshole, if you're mean to the guy then you're a complete write off imo.

He is just so annoying which is also why he’s easy to pick on, from the look to the voice to the pestering behavior. He’s the dorky kid who won’t shut up that we all grew up with. His relatability is just that but his job skills are a different topic. Guess I’m an asshole because I find a person annoying for their actions which is just to receive attention like a child

    • @sirrivet9557

I wonder if the scene is different with rappers because the rappers he initially interviewed were such lovers of music and took themselves seriously. For some of them, its not just fame, but it's an art or a business which itself can be an art. I wonder if a lot of the other artists were overly arrogant thinking it came off as confident or badass.
There's a chance it's less about genre and just him striking the chord with the right kind of musicians. James Brown and Kurt Cobain enjoyed him.
I can easily see it that the people he interviewed that disrespected him and his generosity did it as something they think was awesome. They were probably in music to be famous and cool instead of coming from an earnest place. A lot of rappers and their producers are fans of music. Typically, they enjoy different genres because their love for music comes from a lot of its roots that a select few people can really connect to or at least understand its beauty.
You can kind of see which artsist stand the test of time based on how they react and treat Nardwuar in a time where he wasn't as well known as he is now.

Interesting fact about that Jay-Z interview. Nardwuar was actually stuck in traffic on the way to the Pemberton Music Festival, and it probably would have pushed his arrival back a few hours. Pharell and MUCH went up to the RCMP (local police) and let them know Nardwuar was stuck in traffic and wondered if they could help him get there to do the interview. The officer mentioned he was a big fan of Nardwuar and got on the radio to see if another officer could give him a police escort to the venue - which I am pretty certain they did.
