The weekend snub could have been a blessing in disguise if it's causing changes to the academy voting system. Still a shame it had to be him. Like, even if you didn't care for the album After Hours, there is no denying that Blinding Lights should not have only been nominated but should have won Record of the year. That song is not only just so good, it is a worldwide critical record breaking smash hit record. I don't know how the academy could ignore a song that had both huge critical and commercial success.

I hate the Grammys, it's basically a popularity contest and the actual quality of the music barely feels considered. They're definitely not a very accurate representation of the best music each year smh

The Grammys are literally just a popularity contest where a bunch of celebrities pat each other on the back (for the most part at least). I think a big reason less and less people are watching is because people don't get their music from the radio anymore, you're not restricted to only hearing the music that DJs decide to play. Of course there was always word-of-mouth music discovery, but the age of the internet definitely expanded that by a lot since pretty much everyone on Earth is connected now. With places like TH-cam and Soundcloud becoming the biggest sources of music discovery, people are able to discover different genres and smaller artists they enjoy that don't really fit into the categories or the image of the Grammys. It's easy to not give a fuck about the Grammys when you listen to none or even just a couple of the nominated artists. That's pretty much where I'm at, I haven't actively listened to the music of a single Grammy nominee in several years. Not trynna pretend like I'm super cool for that or anything, people like what they like, but I definitely think that the resources we have now to discover new music have for sure had an effect on people's desire to watch the Grammys.

Nicki has been very patient with her recent albums. I prefer an artist to take their time instead of giving me a rushed album. Queen was a good album, and I hope this next one will be even better.
@remyroland8016 I personally liked Chun-Li, Ganja Burns, LLC, Barbie Dreams, I Thought I Knew You, Hard White, Majesty, Chun Swae (Nicki Verses Only), and Good Form. The album had about 3 songs that could've been scrapped, and then it would've been perfect. Saying that Chun-Li is the only good song is far-fetched. Plus, we haven't had more memorable female rap albums after Nicki and Cardi's albums were released (minus Doja).
*A better example of the Grammys using BTS for views on the award show is 2020, not 2021. The teasers throughout the entire 3h show were “BTS up next” though they performed 2nd to the last. The backlash Grammys got from ARMYs-I am one-is likely why they performed in 2021 bc there were clear signs that ARMY & BTS were DONE with Grammys back in 2020. (They deserved both noms and many more btw but that’s a different topic.)
I think BTS and The Weeknd are perfect examples of how corrupt the Grammys are. You can't tell me these two artists that are selling out stadium tours in the US aren't nominated for muliple Grammys. This has not happened to other artists. And I'd say nominations are actually worse now because artists who are now winning in major categories can't even sellout an arena tour, much less a stadium tour. Example: Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish cannot sell out even arena tours and yet they get multiple Grammys because they are industry darlings. It's just so stupid, and everyone can see the obvious corruption.
The fact that Taylor Swift's album (1989) won "album of the year" instead of Kendrick's album (To Pimp A Butterfly) really makes me angry. To Pimp A Butterfly is one of the best albums of all time. Meanwhile, Taylor's entire discography is literally just generic 2010's pop music that gets old pretty quickly.
Mariah Carey barely has any Grammys and she write, sings and produces whilst singers like Beyonce have so many but don't do that but Beyonce has more Grammy's than most artists even ones like Whitney and Mariah who sing much better.

when I think about award shows, I think about how Better Call Saul and The Wire both never won a single emmy. Every award show is rigged and they hardly ever recognize true talent. the fact that the “abcde fu” song was considered to win any award at the last grammys while patrick fabian and micheal mando weren’t even NOMINATED at the emmys is insane. they need to change the whole award show process in general.
Should’ve mentioned how some artists are blackballed by the Grammys and will purposely be moved to other categories in order to make it less likely they’ll be nominated/win for example Nicki Minaj’s sing Super Freaky Girl was submitted under best Melodic Rap Song but the Grammys board moved the song to Best Pop Song category bc they didn’t want to put Nicki in a category she would actually have a chance in but the Grammys nominated a similar song Latto’s Big Energy in the Best Melodic Rap category

Grammys became hated at that time when Macklemore won 3-4 Grammys (3 on the rap categories) over Kendrick Lamar in which he should’ve won in 2013. Grammys did and end Macklemore dirty.

Firstly, I've never really been a fan of the Grammys. The ceremonies are too long and the Recording Academy either goes too far outside the box or makes the most painfully obvious choices. 😒 Secondly, the sound that you played when you awkwardly censored "rape" nearly had me dying from laughter. Perhaps bc in the 80s-00s huge pop artists were not awarded and the academy often picked aging rock artists. I'm an independent artist.... I released majority of my music over the last 2 years and got around half a million views... I have a strong belief that I will have a very strong career I believe I might even be known for making music sometime soon but I have no faith in winning a Grammy no matter how good my numbers get 💯

Most of the show is a spectacle, while serious music is ignored. If you’re serious about music. Dig for it. Go see a band at a club. There was an alt tv show called The Wedge. Coldplay was interviewed along with Travis, probably Oasis, Radiohead, etc. U2 and The Police played in a small club where I lived and I was too young to see them. Didn’t even know who they were. Been in music myself. Playing gigs was the best. Don’t need award shows to tell me who and what to like.

Nice video but there’s a strong recency bias with your analysis which feels shallow. Grammy snubs of epic proportions did not begin with The Weeknd or Kendrick or Beyoncé’s Lemonade, They’ve been happening for decades. It’s arguably just part of the fabric of the Grammys. You also failed to mention as soon as Harvey Mason Jr took over he abolished the ‘special committees’ and the nominations pool the following year was arguably worse because of it. People like Harvey could really want a rap album to win album of the year , but at the end of the day, its based on a ballot, and voting members are casting ballots in a way that leaves rap artists continually coming up short even when encouraged. You also failed to mention voting blocks. For example Nashville: they will coalesce around rock, country and singer/songwriters (as is their right). The year multiple rap albums were nominated for AOTY, they all lost to Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour because Nashville showed up and showed out, while the hiphop fans split the vote ensuring no rap album would win. It’s very political. Not to mention, not enough younger members & POCs members are joining the academy and casting ballots and then complaining when the winners don’t reflect their taste 🙄
The Grammys and the Rock and Roll HoF are both jokes of an event. The amount of legendary artists who changed music and have yet to get inducted and awards for said albums are insane.
Thank you for mentioning BTS. In 2020 & 21 they were the IFPI recording artists of the year, they had the biggest selling singles IN THE WORLD in their category and they sold more physical albums than anyone in the US. If it wasn't for them doing serious numbers they would not even have been nominated. Note that BTS are still classed as independent artists, they do not have US management, only distributors, and living in Korea obviously there is no schmoozing with the academy, and this is why they will never win. No one can make a profit from them if they do.

The weekend snub could have been a blessing in disguise if it's causing changes to the academy voting system. Still a shame it had to be him. Like, even if you didn't care for the album After Hours, there is no denying that Blinding Lights should not have only been nominated but should have won Record of the year. That song is not only just so good, it is a worldwide critical record breaking smash hit record. I don't know how the academy could ignore a song that had both huge critical and commercial success.

The Grammys are literally just a popularity contest where a bunch of celebrities pat each other on the back (for the most part at least). I think a big reason less and less people are watching is because people don't get their music from the radio anymore, you're not restricted to only hearing the music that DJs decide to play. Of course there was always word-of-mouth music discovery, but the age of the internet definitely expanded that by a lot since pretty much everyone on Earth is connected now. With places like TH-cam and Soundcloud becoming the biggest sources of music discovery, people are able to discover different genres and smaller artists they enjoy that don't really fit into the categories or the image of the Grammys. It's easy to not give a fuck about the Grammys when you listen to none or even just a couple of the nominated artists. That's pretty much where I'm at, I haven't actively listened to the music of a single Grammy nominee in several years. Not trynna pretend like I'm super cool for that or anything, people like what they like, but I definitely think that the resources we have now to discover new music have for sure had an effect on people's desire to watch the Grammys.

The album had about 3 songs that could've been scrapped, and then it would've been perfect. Saying that Chun-Li is the only good song is far-fetched. Plus, we haven't had more memorable female rap albums after Nicki and Cardi's albums were released (minus Doja).

I think BTS and The Weeknd are perfect examples of how corrupt the Grammys are. You can't tell me these two artists that are selling out stadium tours in the US aren't nominated for muliple Grammys. This has not happened to other artists. And I'd say nominations are actually worse now because artists who are now winning in major categories can't even sellout an arena tour, much less a stadium tour. Example: Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish cannot sell out even arena tours and yet they get multiple Grammys because they are industry darlings. when I think about award shows, I think about how Better Call Saul and The Wire both never won a single emmy. Every award show is rigged and they hardly ever recognize true talent. the fact that the “abcde fu” song was considered to win any award at the last grammys while patrick fabian and micheal mando weren’t even NOMINATED at the emmys is insane. they need to change the whole award show process in general.

Its all about the voting process. Most award shows ALLOW THE PUBLIC TO VOTE ON WHO THEY WANT TO WIN. The people who won grammys have been voted by their peers in the industry not by the public. If the public gets to choose who should win a Grammy the show would be a little bit better.
It's more meaningful to have an award chosen by professionals, rather than biased fans who make tons of accounts in order to vote a lot.

I love Alternative bands like U2 and Coldplay. But what about The Cure, Deftones, Foo Fighters?
Yes Beastie Boys, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and other alt bands have won best alt album in the past, but that category has been sidelined.
Most of the show is a spectacle, while serious music is ignored.
If you’re serious about music. Dig for it. Go see a band at a club.
There was an alt tv show called The Wedge. Coldplay was interviewed along with Travis, probably Oasis, Radiohead, etc.
U2 and The Police played in a small club where I lived and I was too young to see them. Didn’t even know who they were.
Been in music myself. Playing gigs was the best.
Don’t need award shows to tell me who and what to like.
I stop taking the Grammy’s serious when after hours by the weekend wasn’t even nominated and blinding lights didn’t get nominated as well after that song was the most listen too song for 2 years during Covid era
They don’t even air the metal section of the Grammy’s anymore lol

I was waiting for this video for long time cos I want to understand what happened to the Grammys , in the past I thought Grammys is like Oscar academy like something big .
Even here in Canada, no one gives a damn about the Juno Awards.
I'm pretty sure is the same in Australia with the ARIA awards and NZ with their awards
Nice video but there’s a strong recency bias with your analysis which feels shallow. Grammy snubs of epic proportions did not begin with The Weeknd or Kendrick or Beyoncé’s Lemonade, They’ve been happening for decades. It’s arguably just part of the fabric of the Grammys. You also failed to mention as soon as Harvey Mason Jr took over he abolished the ‘special committees’ and the nominations pool the following year was arguably worse because of it. People like Harvey could really want a rap album to win album of the year , but at the end of the day, its based on a ballot, and voting members are casting ballots in a way that leaves rap artists continually coming up short even when encouraged. You also failed to mention voting blocks. For example Nashville: they will coalesce around rock, country and singer/songwriters (as is their right). The year multiple rap albums were nominated for AOTY, they all lost to Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour because Nashville showed up and showed out, while the hiphop fans split the vote ensuring no rap album would win. It’s very political. Not to mention, not enough younger members & POCs members are joining the academy and casting ballots and then complaining when the winners don’t reflect their taste 🙄

The Grammys and the Rock and Roll HoF are both jokes of an event. The amount of legendary artists who changed music and have yet to get inducted and awards for said albums are insane.
Thank you for mentioning BTS. In 2020 & 21 they were the IFPI recording artists of the year, they had the biggest selling singles IN THE WORLD in their category and they sold more physical albums than anyone in the US. If it wasn't for them doing serious numbers they would not even have been nominated. Note that BTS are still classed as independent artists, they do not have US management, only distributors, and living in Korea obviously there is no schmoozing with the academy, and this is why they will never win. No one can make a profit from them if they do.
They're not the main source of income for South Korea. Time to stop acting like they are...
@@EverRoxas first of all, I read this comment, and they didn’t imply that at all. Second of all, statistically BTS has made Korea more money than anything else has. No one’s acting like they did it alone or that it’s only them that Gabe’s Korea, such a huge source of income, but be for real. I have looked up the numbers and BTS racks, and a whole bunch of money.
