  • At Superbooth 2024, we met up with Paul Whittington from PWM who presented the long-awaited Mantis synthesizer. The Mantis boasts a duophonic design with the capability to produce four fully formed voices, making it a potent polysynth. With 100 presets in each of its two banks, the Mantis offers a diverse range of sounds through its two filters which can be panned in the stereo field.
    Mantis also includes onboard effects such as chorus and reverb, adding depth and character to its sonic capabilities, and can be powered via usb c. With MIDI control for every parameter and full-size MIDI connectivity, the Mantis was designed in collaboration with the late, great Chris Huggett, so it's bound to become a classic.
    Mantis Available now. Price: 1,599 Euros 1,349 GBP 1,499 USD

      The Mantis comes from Europe, albeit UK. It should be available sooner here than elsewhere.
      Another mystery: $1499 vs. €1599, although the Euro is stronger. WTF is going on here?

      @@RayyMusik I don't know but living in the US... I'm definitely not complaining!

    • @bensupper

      It's designed in the UK, but not manufactured here. Many things govern the MAP price that are hard to control: freight costs, import tariffs, different distribution considerations in different countries, and especially sales taxes ... The US is one of the cheapest places to import and retail tech. This gets reflected in how companies set competitive prices in different countries.
      As well as doing a bit of work for PWM, I manufacture an unrelated product in the UK that I sell worldwide. Distribution is not easy: some countries I decide to make a loss because the numbers aren't enough to set something efficient up, but I'd rather have the customers. Let's leave it at 'I don't know any small manufacturers here who are extolling the virtues of Brexit'.

  • @zyxyuv1650

    I like this company but this is not usable for me because it has no MPE so it can't play back the parts of my songs because all pitch and expression is missing

    • @milk_bath

      There is a mod and pitch joystick.

    • @aopaul

      but it does have pitch as well as aftertouch.

    • @bensupper

      It's a small industry. So a curious fact is that the chief engineer on this project (me) also wrote the MPE spec (while head of R&D at ROLI). Why it's not included is a matter of time and bandwidth rather than awareness or philosophy: MPE's really got to be in the soul of a product; one ought to design the modulation features around pressure and CC74, and the latter should be a modulation input rather than simply being mapped to a control, for example.
      But this is a young company, our codebase is young (in some places, anyway), I'm not Chris Huggett, and the polyphony on this synth was more of a 'Look, we have room for more oscillators' than a part of the initial spec. (The legends on the 'polyphony' buttons were pretty much the last part of the hardware to be finished: if you look at earlier videos they'll be saying something else on them.)
      We'd want our fully-featured polysynth (if and when) to support MPE. It'd be nice to back-propagate it into updates to Mantis as and when. Those things are aspirations, of course, not promises ...

  • @reecedeyoung6595

    "it's a poly synth" he says, but its not really. Its more like duo paraphonic. Not sure how the note allocation is going to work on that.

    • @aopaul

      At the end of the day, it does four voices so that counts as a poly in my book, no matter what magic is used.

    • @reecedeyoung6595

      @@aopaul it absolutely does not have four voices. It has 4 osc. People like you who don't understand the difference are the reasons this type of marketing is irresponsible.

    • @aopaul

      @@reecedeyoung6595 You could have explained the difference but you chose to be a douche.

    • @aopaul

      @@reecedeyoung6595 OK, help me out here. My understanding is every note that can be played at once is a voice. The Moog One has 48 oscillators but only 16 notes that can be played at once = 16 voices. The Mantis has 2 oscillators (Oscillators: 2 x VCO + sub-oscillator per voice) 4 notes at once = 4 voices. Right?

    • @reecedeyoung6595

      @@aopaul this wasn't meant as a criticism of you for not knowing. Rather the company for deceptive marketing. Understanding synth voicing is not trivial.
      An osc generates a waveform with variable pitch and shape, but fixed volume. A general synth voice combines multiple osc, sends them to a filter and then a VCA (controls volume over time). A full featured voice also has dedicated modulation sources such as envelopes and LFOs.
      Basically a osc is only a single part of what makes up a synth voice. With paraphonic synth voices you can send individual pitches to each osc. You can create harmonies, but the volume and filter are controlled together.
      Pressing a single key generally sends the same pitch value to both osc. Pressing a second key while holding the first will cause the pitch of the second osc to change to the second note, and may or may not retrigger the envelopes.
