Some rare artists are a force of nature whose talents are a gift to us all and whose dedication to their work is a sharing of joy. Step forward, Ms Nik West. 🙌 (P.S. the 'sauce' in your hair looks great! 🔥)
It's the old adage, it's not what you play, it's the way you play it. Groove is not so much about technical ability, but feel, timing and space. This great lesson teaches all of that.
Hey Professor, it’s good to have you back here on TH-cam! You always bring a groove and uplifting Spirit that adds more sunshine ☀️ to the day. Infinite Uplifting Blessings to All of your Family❣️✨😎😁
Truth is that the deepest lesson I take from this is how much the drum feel is inside of you, I mean in the beginning of it you just play the ONE but there is so much groove happening inside of you that I must remind myself to always be funkin' even if all I have is one note. Thanks
I learned something here for sure. All I know is other people's basslines but this helped me with theory. Also I appreciate the fact this lady has the Bootsy Collins tread of thought down.
AWESOME! Covering other people's bass lines is a great way to learn all of the fundamentals so then you have all the tools to make your own from scratch!
Groovy AF! Love the slide off the A to the run. That's a tasty trick I use a lot too. Simple is where it's at. Average audience folk can't wrap their head around complex lines. They have to think about it which causes groovus interuptus. Simple wins all day.
This is teaching us to fish...for funk. Loved it. I notice this exact format you are sharing with Get on the Floor - MJ and September - their notes are sooo staccato (either slap or plucked). Subscribed!
Thank you for the love! I think as musicians we tend to learn a bunch of songs and that's wonderful but sometimes creating your own is the challenge for most so I figured I'd break this down as easy as I could.
Most catchy bass lines are so basic and simple. Simplicity is key. Many times we get influence by players that do all this stuff up and down the neck of the bass. Simplicity and pocket are best friends just as drums and bass!
Most welcome Nik! You know I learned to play guitar because I wanted to play Bass! I started my musical journey as a bassist! I still love playin it♥️. Its my first love♥️ you can check out my covers here! th-cam.com/channels/vtkXl0TjXbHbkBVeZrd2yw.html Thanks Nik. Im one of your followers! Keep it up!♥️
This is good to know. I play very differently than most bass players though. I play a 4 string right handed bass left handed with a low B instead of a G string and I use a felt pick and brass slide. I can write music but I have a hard time playing by notes and sheet music. I play entirely by ear. My bandmates literally have to hum the tune they want me to play. Then I can play it fine.
Joe! That's awesome too! That's how I learned how to play all by ear... reading the notes was all secondary for me. Playing by ear is definitely a gift!
space IS a note!!!! if the funk don't move your butt than what is really what?!?! Thanks for bringing it back home, I'm so tired of very talented but undanceable bassists wanking their egos to impress themselves mostly. music is a feedback thing and bless you for putting it straight. you made a new fan✌️
The pattern at 2:51, the last 3 notes before the 1 took me a minute, so staccato, even and smooth, while moving the hand down two frets. My hand just wanted to slur the second and third note and it took a number of times to get even close to the stripped down rhythmic pulse you create. That one thing was worth the price of admission, never mind the rest of this great advice. Thank you.
Nice! Yep just think short and to the point with the notes. If the strings are ringing, try a fret wrap by gruvgear.com... that also helps keep the notes short and tight
😂😂🤣 Your look at 5.00 speaks volumes! Perfect and most valuable advice...that's how it's done! Bravissima! E bellissima! I've been playing bass for about forty years now (and i began playing pretty late), so i don't look GREAT like you do but somehow i can fetch some gig all the same! These are the golden rules of groove! 👍🏿👍🏻👍!
Great playing and just what I'm trying to do at the moment. Admittedly I couldn't get everything from this video, but certainly inspired me to do some nice grooves.
Best Wishes from the Baltic Sea in North Germany Thanks for this Bass-Lesson - Sun shine on You, Nik. I'll try my Best, to make my own booty moves - Big Thanx to You ! 😀😀😀
@@NikWestBass you are warmly welcome anytime dear..keep me posted if one day ur planning to play here, i d be delighted to see your performance ! Take care...
Ooh ooh you are amazing bassist teacher. Now i learn from you how to create bass line . you are beautiful,in face ,in bass groove,in slapping, etc i appreciate you hoping i will watch your more videos and i will understand exactly how to play bass guitar correctly
so must music lesson to be! sympatic but character-strong teacher, with levels. a highly understandble english, without too much bla bla, and right!!! staccato is the key, in the pauses should be listen the light reverb in room, that boom boom - yes booty boom! thank you! liked and subscribed
Now this was a great tutorial video. I currently learning the chords, scales etc. You really made it so easy to understand how to create a groove that simple and enjoyable to play. Thanks 😊
Another awesome video. By the way, I recently saw a Fender Jazz Bass Special '87 with PJ pickups (same as that one Guns'n'Roses' Duff McKagan used to play in the 80's) - it was kind of idly laying around at some dude's house here in Brazil, I know what is good so I purchased it LOL I am so in love for its growl. I've always been the kind of bass player who looks for 'the growl', the presence of the bass, and now I think I can get booties to move with the help of your playing tips. Thanks!
HAHA! Wow! Yeah the older basses seem to have a special sound! Tone is EVERYTHING so I feel you on that! Tone is in the wood, the pickups, and mainly the fingers but the growl HAS to come directly from the bass... so you got a good one!!!
THE awesome Groove Goddess with massive musical talent,a fabulous bass lesson, stripping down to basics the reason why we pick up the bass in the first place…… Well put together and brilliantly presented…..thank you….
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with such a sunny smile! And thanks for making it in an easy English language so foreign people such as I am can understand what you're saying :)

Hey Nikki Bad bAss! Can I/we get a copy of that funky backing track?
PLEASE?!!!
😬😬😬
It's the old adage, it's not what you play, it's the way you play it. Groove is not so much about technical ability, but feel, timing and space. This great lesson teaches all of that.
YES!!!! You get it! Thanks for watching
This is exactly what I needed to get me outta learners block, stuck on scales and over thinking. Groove that's so cool, Niki West cheers.
Thank you for the love! Sometimes it's good to take a break from learning everyone else's songs and just get creative 🎉
Just do this. Play some drum backing tracks on yt...funky. Keep up with the bas with simple lines.
Great lesson I like mouth beats I notice most groove masters click their tongue but your beat boxing makes more sense to me
I don't even know why I do that LOL! It's just the way I feel and understand music
Beautiful voice on top of everything else...
Groovy and simple . Bass4ever. Thanks!
You bet! THANK you for watching!

HEEEEEY VINCENT! Good seeing you here! lots of love!
You lessons are absolutely world class. Great player, great musician, and great teacher. THANK YOU Nik West.
Thank you for the kind words!! Super appreciated!
Truth is that the deepest lesson I take from this is how much the drum feel is inside of you, I mean in the beginning of it you just play the ONE but there is so much groove happening inside of you that I must remind myself to always be funkin' even if all I have is one note. Thanks
You see things I don't even recognize in myself. LOL! Yep I just keep grooving the drums in my head ... it's easier to NOT PLAY so much that way.
She is a living embodiment of music, it just comes naturally to her.
Thank you for the love!!! I had to work hard on this.
Very good lesson in groove/functionality. The bits about “space” and “note length”… PRICELESS tools!
Thank you!
I learned something here for sure. All I know is other people's basslines but this helped me with theory. Also I appreciate the fact this lady has the Bootsy Collins tread of thought down.

Simple yet powerful and groovy line! Thank you!

Groovy AF! Love the slide off the A to the run. That's a tasty trick I use a lot too. Simple is where it's at. Average audience folk can't wrap their head around complex lines. They have to think about it which causes groovus interuptus. Simple wins all day.
Love this comment! You get it! Simple is the key to the masses... You want the average person to be able to sing that bass line!
Played thrash metal show like couple hours ago and really appreciate your groove video. You do explain things pretty universally, much bass love
Rock on! That's actually pretty cool for you to say that! Metal definitely has groove in it bc it's all about locking in with the drummer!
This band has some really underrated groove in their catalog !

“Space is a note”. I’m going to get that put on a T-shirt.

Thanks Darling Nik! Awesome spin-off of the HEAD groove! Keep on groovin' ya'll!

That G and A are so perfectly behind the beat, honestly, I don't know if you can teach that.
That's where my natural pocket tends to sit. Slightly behind the beat. Some people groove right on top of the beat but both sound awesome!
Love your videos, you rock...Literally and figuratively :)
Wow, thank you for the love!
I immediately fell in love with how you explain things in detail! 💖
Oh thank you!. Thanks for watching!!
That bass fretboard strap is awesome! Also, great lesson. This was exactly what I needed.
Love the way you explain things. Made it very easy to absorb and replicate on my own within minutes. Thank you!
