  • Ever heard of that groove that makes your booty move? I get hired by companies like ESPN and DISNEY to create bass lines that are danceable. In this video, I'll be showing you how to create a danceable bass line that will guarantee to get EVERYONE movin. Follow these simple tips because they say that if your bass line can't make the booty move, you're not quite groovin'.

    Groovy AF! Love the slide off the A to the run. That's a tasty trick I use a lot too. Simple is where it's at. Average audience folk can't wrap their head around complex lines. They have to think about it which causes groovus interuptus. Simple wins all day.

    Truth is that the deepest lesson I take from this is how much the drum feel is inside of you, I mean in the beginning of it you just play the ONE but there is so much groove happening inside of you that I must remind myself to always be funkin' even if all I have is one note. Thanks

    • @NikWestBass
      @NikWestBass  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You see things I don't even recognize in myself. LOL! Yep I just keep grooving the drums in my head ... it's easier to NOT PLAY so much that way.

    This is really good instruction, I tr to pass this info onto people, they don't get what I am saying though. I am saying be simple, have good timing...your timing is like perfect this is why it sounds good.
    People want to play bass too fast, too much like a solo instrument right away, they can't even slap yet sometimes. I dunno, the world has changed a lot since the 1970's, finger tapping a guitar solo is part of a bass playing now ?. Not for me it's not...

  • @Mtb-TrailTime
    @Mtb-TrailTime ปีที่แล้ว

    Most catchy bass lines are so basic and simple. Simplicity is key. Many times we get influence by players that do all this stuff up and down the neck of the bass. Simplicity and pocket are best friends just as drums and bass!

    Another awesome video. By the way, I recently saw a Fender Jazz Bass Special '87 with PJ pickups (same as that one Guns'n'Roses' Duff McKagan used to play in the 80's) - it was kind of idly laying around at some dude's house here in Brazil, I know what is good so I purchased it LOL I am so in love for its growl. I've always been the kind of bass player who looks for 'the growl', the presence of the bass, and now I think I can get booties to move with the help of your playing tips. Thanks!

      HAHA! Wow! Yeah the older basses seem to have a special sound! Tone is EVERYTHING so I feel you on that! Tone is in the wood, the pickups, and mainly the fingers but the growl HAS to come directly from the bass... so you got a good one!!!

    Actually you know what. Maybe I'll restring it left handed and see if I can get a hendrix style sound. That's what gave his guitar its distinct sound. It only works on fenders though because of how the tuning pegs are aligned.

    space IS a note!!!! if the funk don't move your butt than what is really what?!?! Thanks for bringing it back home, I'm so tired of very talented but undanceable bassists wanking their egos to impress themselves mostly.
    music is a feedback thing and bless you for putting it straight.
    you made a new fan✌️

    Cool video- but if we count the drumbeat as the kick on the 1 and 3 and the snare (clap) on the 2 and 4 - You are hitting on the 1 of every other bar - the rest of the main riff is syncopating so the bass is then punctuating on the 4& of the 1st bar and missing the 1 of the second bar - this back and forth swaying with the beat is what makes it rock/grove to MAKE YOUR BOOTY MOVE.

    • @NikWestBass
      @NikWestBass  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the one of every other bar.... in this case...but nonetheless still the ONE.

    This is good to know. I play very differently than most bass players though. I play a 4 string right handed bass left handed with a low B instead of a G string and I use a felt pick and brass slide. I can write music but I have a hard time playing by notes and sheet music. I play entirely by ear. My bandmates literally have to hum the tune they want me to play. Then I can play it fine.

    • @NikWestBass
      @NikWestBass  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe! That's awesome too! That's how I learned how to play all by ear... reading the notes was all secondary for me. Playing by ear is definitely a gift!

    A fat one is essential to a greasy groove. When pop went to drum machines and computers, they filled every imaginable space and completely lost the feel.

    • @NikWestBass

      That's where my natural pocket tends to sit. Slightly behind the beat. Some people groove right on top of the beat but both sound awesome!
