As a Malaysian, I'm so happy to see a Malaysian car in Garbage Time! Your tests are very fair, and you didn't tone down your comedy to be more PC. Awesome job. You can see the Malaysian design philosophy throughout the car. To really understand why things are designed the way they are, people first need to understand that Malaysians have really strong family values, and desire affordable no-nonsense products. Malaysians generally speaking want to have a family, ie. get married and have kids. They also want to protect their family for as long as they can, ie. grandparents and children of adult ages still living with them. Of course, this doesn't apply to every family but when you see it, it's considered the norm. Just being honest, our (Malaysian) economy back then isn't the best in the world. Comparing Malaysia's GDP to Australia in 2009, we were 5x below Australia's. Furthermore, with ludicrously high import taxes on cars, the everyday man who's trying to save money won't be caring about the latest and greatest features in the automobile world. We just want something that works and doesn't burn a hole in our wallet. Firstly to address the cheap plastic interior. It is obviously to reduce cost. For anyone with kids out there, you definitely know how children will find a way to scratch anything. Doesn't matter what wood, leather, steel, or silicon trimming, they somehow always find a way to scratch it. Therefore, less emphasis was placed for the material design of the interiors as it would only make it more expensive. Next, the misting cold aircond. Being that the country is located at the equator, we have a tropical climate characterized by hot temperatures (averaging above 30c) and high humidity all throughout the year. This combination creates a one two punch that requires every vehicle's aircond to be able to immediately cool a hot car baked under the sun, and maintain cool temperatures during long distance driving. Why does long distance driving comes into consideration? The majority of Malaysians are Muslims, and during the muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr, many of them need to drive back hundreds of kilometres to celebrate in their hometown. Certainly, this can also be applied to Malaysian Chinese and and Malaysian Indian who go home for Lunar New Year celebrations and Deepavali respectively. Apart from that, malaysian cars have an abundance of cupholders. To this day, we are obsessed with having cupholders. For one, you now know that Malaysia is hot, so we most likely carry our own water bottle each, and each one gets a compartment for quick access. Two, drive throughs and takeaway culture is very strong, with a preference to keep our drinks safe and readily available during driving. The number of cupholders often allows 4 people (a family unit) to have their own drinks stored safely. Lastly, the large door entrances are essential for three reasons. Firstly, it makes it easier for people to help someone disabled entering the car. Think about caring for your elderly parents and you need to take them to their hospital appointment. Having a large door where you don't bump your head every single time is a blessing. Secondly, imagine carrying a baby or a toddler with you. Having to scoot down to enter through a smaller door can be quite stressful. Thirdly, it is common to also use our cars for cargo. Not only for people who move houses, but also for the entrepreneurs to transport their inventory to hawker stalls or offices.
As a malaysian, back in the mid 2000s, i vividly remember there to be many water bottles inside the car 😅. Itself a memory i honestly don’t know where it came from, but feels familiar with childhood.

I'm currently working in the place where we used to make these little shitboxes, Proton Shah Alam. It's funny that I didn't knew we exported the Saga BLM (S16) to Australia back in 09. Also fun fact, this car is based on the Proton Savvy platform and evolved into the Saga FLX and Saga VVT, which is still on production until this very day! This car has an Akashi Kikai 5 speed which is tbh the worst manual version for any Proton. I currently owned a Saga VVT 5 speed manual which uses a Getrag 5 speed that doesn't have that stupid long throws and gear stick giggle (because the linkage in the AK 5MT is a solid metal rod).
Hey! My dad had a Savvy back in 2008 (... or 2009 I don't remember) and a Preve in 2012. Malaysian here, seeing this literally threw me back to my childhood lmao. These were literally EVERYWHERE when I was growing up. We had a silver proton as a family car growing up. The rev "flare" is more commonly known as rev hang, and it exists for emissions reasons. Prevents the fuel mixture from being too rich or too lean for that split second when the throttle closes. It's in almost all modern manuals and it sucks
@@Suzumi-kun depends entirely on the car, it's just the lazy way to hit emissions targets. My Hyundai didn't really have any, my Mini I have now it's there but not too bad outside of high RPM 1-2 shifts, and a Civic Si I tried out it was so bad it turned me off on the whole car
@@Suzumi-kundrove a manual VW Up! with this "feature" for a while, was awful. Impossible to shift smoothly, whether up or down, because the gas pedal was on what felt like a 1s delay. Starting from a stop light required flooring it for a second before letting off the clutch or it would just judder because it refused to give you any power until you've held the pedal down for a second or two. Hateful thing. Somehow, the automatic is even worse.
Can confirm. My fam's '09 Honda Fit has the rev hang and it is quite bad. Interesting thing is that it wasn't as prominent until I cleaned the throttle body, so either I borked it somehow or the built up carbon effected the way it ran. Interestingly my old '07 Honda Fit Sport didn't have any rev hang at all... Don't know enough about the design to say if that is the case for all of these or not.
I had a 2009 Aygo with a cable operated throttle and it didn't do it but was horrendous at very low speed with the sensitivity. I now have a fiesta with throttle by wire and it noticeably rev hangs
I believe the "flare" is actually called rev hang and manufacturers program the throttle to do this so that remaning fuel in engine (when you let off the throttle) is able to properly mix with the air and be burnt. This is done to reduce emissions when letting off the throttle!
They did the same thing mechanically back in the day by using dashpots. When the throttle closed, it would hit the dashpot lever, and the dashpot would provide resistance that slowed the throttle blade gently to a close instead of allowing it to snap shut. This helped reduce NOx emissions.
Yup. I have a Persona VVT which is based off the same engine and I always leave slight pressure on the throttle as I change gears. Ensures a smooth gear change most of the time but 1 to 2 is still dodgy
I've driven this Saga BLM for a long trip few times almost a decade ago , it was an amazingly comfortable car for its size. That iconic AC is very important if you ever went to Malaysia you will know why it is super cold . As for the tiny tyres is for economy reasons , bigger wheels means expensive maintenance which not everyone would want when they need a daily car.
Saga is such an iconic car here, i have a vivid memories back in 2003 when my late grandpa brought me to the airport to watch airplane take off using his first gen boxy saga
Out of all the cars sold in Australia, I really didn't expect Wade to buy this. I currently drive this (because I'm Malaysian of course) but the spec here are pretty different. Mine is the 1.3L N-line Auto, which basically means it's the 2nd cheapest trim model with an auto gearbox & gosh I hate the gearbox. It's a 4-speed & cruises at 120 km/h at 3.5k RPMs. Imagine doing that for nearly 3 hours in a 7 hour trip. Here, it is only sold with the 1.3L CamPro engine (except for the commercial taxi trim) but this engine is slightly improved from the 1.6L which they removed the torque dip by adding a variable length intake. There's also no heater since we don't have seasons, the aircond only goes out the round vents & no where else, there's no reverse sensors & has the same wing mirrors as Wade's (higher trim models have electric controls). But overall, it's a pretty reliable & surprisingly good handling car for its price Edit: forgot to mention that mine doesn't have any airbags or any other safety systems apart from seatbels
ive done top speed 177 kmh with auto (Engine Cut off) & able to do 13 min in between Plaza tol salak tinggi - Tol Putrajaya. I miss my Grubber saga BLM 1.3 auto T.T
3:13 One of the fun thing about Protons cars is that, although cheapo and bare bones (for the affordable models), the air conditioning is COOOOOOOOLD. They can cool down the inside temperature in a respectable amount of time, parked under hot sun without sunshades.
That makes a lot of sense, actually, because: The fictional setting of JS2, Panau, is "located in Southeast Asia." Malaysia, where this car is from, is in Southeast Asia.
The Sakura Aquila, to me, looks more like a shrunken down Holden VY Commodore. It is supposed to be a generic Japanese econobox, but the designer clearly looked at the Commo for inspiration. I don't entirely disagree with the Proton comparison, though.
I've owned two Protons - they're certainly built (down) to a price but pretty reliable in my experience. One was a Proton Wira, based on the old Mitsubishi Lancer, and that thing had a surprising turn of speed on it. A few people smirked at my "grandad car" until it flew past them... The old man motor could surprise people!
My favourite Proton is the Satria GTI, basically a souped up version of the Mitsubishi Colt with some input from Lotus. It even has fake bolted arches, it's the very definition of a super nugg.
The flared arches was actually really bolted on to the body, with real bolts, instead of the ones you see on pretty much on every crossovers sold nowadays.
i think satria is a missed potential for Malaysia to tap into hot hatch market or just sports cars market. imagine if they make proper performance version of the Saga and make it AWD. that'll be Malaysian's Lancer Evo
@@ziqqerlad Deleting the satria from production lines is probably the worst mistake ever, that lil hatch egg was on par with the fiesta and even the GR rolla theses days in terms of fun. TBF the mass public takes the blame, your average Malaysian is too dense to appreciate 2 door cars

Man here in Malaysia you can still find this car everywhere lol. They have the newer models of the Saga (which is what it's called here) but universities are overrun by these things ;-;
Oh boy.... I rented one of them (in Malaysia it's still the Proton Saga ... Or Aga as it decided to call itself). Most clueless autobox I've ever used. The only (ONLY) saving grace was the aircon on it worked wonders. Fired up the engine and within seconds cold, pleasent air wafting through.
yeah, these second gen ones used to have an optional cvt gearbox offered back in the day and those were horrendously bad, it's basically nissan's cvt but a bit lower grade. Thankfully, now the current third gen ones are equipped with Hyundai's 4 speed auto and those are infinitely better. manual is still an option though
the "flare" is whats referred to as "rev hang" now. the throttle is hung open for a split secong upon release to burn any fuel already in the intake on its way to the cylinders that would otherwise be unburned and create more emissions.
You got a Proton with working power windows? That's unbelievable There is a name for car like these in Malaysia, which is "Milo Tin", basically, tin can on wheels. Cheaply made interior and exterior, no nonsense no nothing to keep the costs down, for people that just want to get to point A to point B on 4 wheels while being able to fit their entire family in the it.
There's something quite honourable in that. Maybe I'm just tired of the fact that every car on the road nowadays is an overpriced crossover with the same identikit faux-high-end styling and the same "luxury" cues, but I sort of respect something that doesn't *try* to be "sexy" and doesn't care about "cheap" looking plastic interiors as long as they do the job.
In Malaysia we call this model the Proton Saga BLM (No its not Black Lives Matter). This car still lives today on the street. Its light, nimble, fun and spacious. However Malaysians being Malaysian, the poor fuel economy of this car makes it less desirable than its rival, the Perodua Myvi .
Fun fact, the Daihatsu Applause isn't a sedan. It's a kind of liftback sedan cross. The entire rear including the glass lifts up, but the boot section is a flat panel.
This is cool and funny, I wish we had these in the uk, however, in my opinion, best proton is definitely the jumbuck, it’s literally a Ute built on a lancer chassis
Yeah the Jumbuck was popular in Australia, rarely see them anymore though so I guess they didn't last. Or all their owners followed the trend and bought Hiluxes and Rangers etc.
@@AfferbeckBeats here in the uk, we still see them about, they are usually beat up, but I don’t think they were ever popular in the first place, as people would rather just buy a mondeo or focus with a 1.8 diesel. :( rip cool cars
That AC blower is so damn powerful, if u aim the centre vent straight to the rear passengers, the airblast will bounce off the rear windscreen, n the rear passengers on either side of the centre seat will feel a cold draft blowing gently at the back of their neck. And this little thing can go all the way to 180kmh… n stay there as long as the road relatively straight n flat, n theres fuel in the tank (obviously).
I used to work at a Proton import centre in the UK around 2000 and we fixed Protons that got damaged in transit on the ships. Protons are basically rebadged Mitsubishi cars.

Struggles to do anything well but technically functions, has numerous issues being cheaply built out of garbage plastic and will break easily.
Those Alpine 1 Din radios are still some of the best out in the market, despite Alpine not really making new non-touchscreen 1 Din radios anymore. CDE-178BT is considered one of the best radios of all time with bass heads in here lol
There’s actually a newer model of the car here in Malaysia. Heaps load better than this version but many are still on the road today in Malaysia due to the high availability of replacement parts. Glad to see it in Australia 😂
As soon as I saw the speedo in the Dankpods iPad episode I knew that Dank had bought either a Saga or Satria Neo. This is the kind of car I get excited about!
Engineering Explained made a video about the rev hang issue with throttle by wire cars. In short: it’s because it helps with emissions by smoothly closing and opening the throttle valve if I remember correctly.
Its got mivec in it, which is a less notorious VTEC. Pretty cool stuff, especially if you're on a highway and you just stomp on it for a while. It gives you massive giggles whilst not being that much of a boost where you'll flip out and die.

Im from the UK, my family had a 1992 Proton GLS and it was £80, had it for 15 years, it'd tow our caravan and boat, and do all the hard work without breaking a sweat, best car weve ever had
If it can tow a caravan and a boat it'll survive anything
@senseal5462 it didn't survive a smashed in window, very hard to find parts for a near 30 year old Malaysian car, that was the end of it sadly
I like that you owned both a caravan and a boat, but the car budget didn't stretch to a full hundo quid
@@bunkymag well, the caravan is just my grannies old trailer tent, and the boat belonging to my more well off uncle

I'm form Malaysia, I'm glad you showed one of our car on your channel!
Malaysian here, seeing this literally threw me back to my childhood lmao. These were literally EVERYWHERE when I was growing up. We had a silver proton as a family car growing up. Still remember that cheap vinyl smell and cheap feeling plastic, brings back memories. Had heaps of problems though, still loved it either way.
I wish I was as happy... EXISTING as Wade is.
This dude probably shouts with joy at the coffee maker making burbling noises.
We must strive to be as happy with the little things as Wade is as he's shouting with joy at his brainless noodle dog. (We love you, Frank.)

"The new phone books are here!"--Steve Martin, "The Jerk."
The rev "flare" is more commonly known as rev hang, and it exists for emissions reasons. Prevents the fuel mixture from being too rich or too lean for that split second when the throttle closes.
It's in almost all modern manuals and it sucks
Wow never heard of this, my 2009 manual car doesn't seem to have that, very interesting that a cheaper car does
@@Suzumi-kun depends entirely on the car, it's just the lazy way to hit emissions targets.
Being a Malaysian and waking up to a garbage time video with a proton saga is something i wasn't expecting today
0:42 about half of these cars in Malaysia have that rear garnish missing, i won't be surprised if his one falls out of sudden anytime soon
It looks like a Jetta from Cashies
Looks like an older Nissan Sentra to me, like it's uncanny
I ain't gonna lie mate it kinda does look like a cashies Jetta
I believe the "flare" is actually called rev hang and manufacturers program the throttle to do this so that remaning fuel in engine (when you let off the throttle) is able to properly mix with the air and be burnt. This is done to reduce emissions when letting off the throttle!
Interesting 🤔
I had a 5 speed ford focus from the same era and the rev hang was terrible, did read that it was for emissions.
That was my guess when Wade explained it to me. Everything cars do that seems annoying for the driver is going to be for emissions targets
This is basically any car in a video game where it doesn't render properly because the developers ran out of polygons

The Cybertruck looks more like a ps1 game.
But overall, it's a pretty reliable & surprisingly good handling car for its price
Edit: forgot to mention that mine doesn't have any airbags or any other safety systems apart from seatbels
there was a limited run of 1.6 SE as well but the taxi spec iirc is the only way to get it with a manual
7 hour trip? Where the hell are you driving for 7 hours, Bangkok?
@@ferretyluv i'm assuming kuala lumpur to perlis, which is the northmost of malaysia, which borders with thailand

3:13 One of the fun thing about Protons cars is that, although cheapo and bare bones (for the affordable models), the air conditioning is COOOOOOOOLD. They can cool down the inside temperature in a respectable amount of time, parked under hot sun without sunshades.
4:13 *"OW!, MY FING-"*
Lmao, I just realized that this is the car that's quite often seen in Just Cause 2.
That makes a lot of sense, actually, because:
The fictional setting of JS2, Panau, is "located in Southeast Asia."
Malaysia, where this car is from, is in Southeast Asia.
@@DanteTorn Yeah that's what I thought of too, I always wondered what that car really was. I've finally found out after 14 years lmao.

Oh, that car that makes an absolutely awful grinding sound if it gets too damaged.
The Sakura Aquila, to me, looks more like a shrunken down Holden VY Commodore. It is supposed to be a generic Japanese econobox, but the designer clearly looked at the Commo for inspiration. I don't entirely disagree with the Proton comparison, though.
Ah yes, Generic_Car03
After the Corolla and Camry
I've owned two Protons - they're certainly built (down) to a price but pretty reliable in my experience. One was a Proton Wira, based on the old Mitsubishi Lancer, and that thing had a surprising turn of speed on it. A few people smirked at my "grandad car" until it flew past them... The old man motor could surprise people!
As a Malaysian I totally agree with all the assessment. Love it
My favourite Proton is the Satria GTI, basically a souped up version of the Mitsubishi Colt with some input from Lotus.
@@ziqqerlad Deleting the satria from production lines is probably the worst mistake ever, that lil hatch egg was on par with the fiesta and even the GR rolla theses days in terms of fun.

... Or Aga as it decided to call itself). Most clueless autobox I've ever used.
The only (ONLY) saving grace was the aircon on it worked wonders. Fired up the engine and within seconds cold, pleasent air wafting through.
The AC in my car is pretty decent but I'd kill for a AC that was just bam cold like that.
yeah, these second gen ones used to have an optional cvt gearbox offered back in the day and those were horrendously bad, it's basically nissan's cvt but a bit lower grade.
Thankfully, now the current third gen ones are equipped with Hyundai's 4 speed auto and those are infinitely better. manual is still an option though

I once shivered from the AC being too cold even it was only on '2', outside was a whopping 38C !!
the "flare" is whats referred to as "rev hang" now. the throttle is hung open for a split secong upon release to burn any fuel already in the intake on its way to the cylinders that would otherwise be unburned and create more emissions.
You got a Proton with working power windows? That's unbelievable
There is a name for car like these in Malaysia, which is "Milo Tin", basically, tin can on wheels.

I really wish more simple cars like this were available, because sometimes you just need to go from point A to point b.
The Casio F-91W watch is just the perfect fit for someone that owns this car.
"The Car" is the Casio f-91w of watches. Cheap, well built, functional, lasts forever and does exactly what it was designed to do.
The Proton is the cheap kids toy watch. Struggles to do anything well but technically functions, has numerous issues being cheaply built out of garbage plastic and will break easily.

For those wondering, sound pressure (dB) is a logarithmic scale. Each number change up is roughly a perceived doubling in how loud something is.
I believe that every 10dB increase is perceived as twice as loud.
Now that is "An Car"
There’s actually a newer model of the car here in Malaysia. Heaps load better than this version but many are still on the road today in Malaysia due to the high availability of replacement parts. Glad to see it in Australia 😂

Engineering Explained made a video about the rev hang issue with throttle by wire cars. In short: it’s because it helps with emissions by smoothly closing and opening the throttle valve if I remember correctly.
The twist of the 0-60 test is as hilarious as it is amazing. Who knew a Goober could have a wannabe VTEC punch to it?
Its got mivec in it, which is a less notorious VTEC.
Pretty cool stuff, especially if you're on a highway and you just stomp on it for a while. It gives you massive giggles whilst not being that much of a boost where you'll flip out and die.
