You see, Martin is the type of person who would never reach out for help. He’s just that way! So, we need to reach out to him and let him know how much we care! What’s this for you ask? Well, Martin needs a new pair of sneakers. He’s had the same shoes for many years. So, let’s all pull together and get those new shoes on Martin’s feet!! 👟
Believe me that all of you have rewarded me well through this TH-cam Channel. It is always a mystery as to how much money is made from youtube. It was never started to make money but if they want to send me money and all you have to do is click off the adds after 5 seconds I gladly accept the transfers into my "Mad Money Account." It is up to about $7,000 U.S. a year now so a new pair of sneakers is not out of the question. You may have noticed all the mid-roll ads on other channels lately. TH-cam made a change so that any video over 8 minutes qualified for mid-roll ads. Then they automatically made that the default for all past and new videos. I took the necessary step to opt out of that arrangement as I think it is wrong.
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 And I LOVE that you never ask folks to like, comment, subscribe, share, or do the hokey pokey and turn themselves around. TH-cam encourages and rewards that sort of behavior because I guess it makes more money, but I applaud you for not doing it.
Martin's just a youtuber of the old days. Ten years ago, people would use TH-cam just to share what they liked (to do) with other people around the world. I understand that he just wants to share some part of his life he enjoys and sees no point in changing his life to adjust to modern-time TH-cam. His goal is not growth but sharing to whoever wants to see it. He makes no call for you to subscribe or "hit the notification bell" and writes no all-caps click-bait captions. Anyway, that's the feeling I get and that's why I like him :)
I sometimes chuckle at your bright modern furniture. Yet, I see the feasibility of the swivel chair, and the comfort of a soft cushion & the slight reclining qualities when sitting out observing nature. And, surely no respectable deer hunter will mistake that bright color for a deer. You are living the good life Martin. Thanks for sharing. I am dying for one of Vonnie's pies.
SB, I don't know how handy your are in the kitchen, but I have a vid on my channel showing you how to make them. But the shortcut is buy a can of cherry pie filler and some premade pie crusts and give it a go! Vonnie
Just back from our lakehouse. No internet, just chores and snakes. At least I don’t have bears. Stay safe Martin. I think I will be making some of Vonnies pies this week. Going to teach that art of cooking to my daughter. I’ll bet dollars to pies that 3 year old granddaughter will take to them just fine!
Martin, thank you for this channel. A welcome refuge from current events. My wife and I are building a Timber Frame Cabin in the mountains on property we bought four years ago. It is the first property we've ever owned having rented our entire adult lives. I am 64 years young. I've milled all the lumber myself and made all the Timber Framing tools with my own hands (I am a blacksmith and Timber Framer). I am raising the Timber Frame next month. Hauling about 7,000 lbs. of Timbers 750 miles to the property is no easy feat but it will be done. I too am running out of friends to help! They seem to disappear when the heavy work is just getting started! Ha! That's OK. I'm in the best shape of my life and I am an expert with tools and rigging. If we lived closer I'd trade labor with you! It's amazing what can be done with the five basic machines.....Lever, fulcrum, inclined plane, Pulleys, wedges and of course THE WHEEL! The most important thing in moving heavy things is to reduce friction. Once you do that you can easily move anything. Good luck with the new cabin.......Keep up the great work. You are a beacon of hope my friend in a Chaotic world.. instagram.com/theforgeworks/
I appreciate your efforts, Martin! And your honesty. Many people who have never had a youtube channel don't understand that the creator of that channel does have control of ads. I almost always click off instantly if their is an ad in the first minute of a video (not the banner ads) because if there is an ad that quickly, that means that there will be 8 or more in a 30 minute video. God bless!!
Martin please know that I live vicariously through your videos. Your living the dream that I could never afford and or fit into my younger life. I especially love the winter months sitting next to the wood burning stove. I would be the guy who would have to repeat legendary comment during the night, "Oh, the boy's not going to be happy" . Ha,ha as I like to stay warm, maybe not over 90° F warm though. Ha,ha. It would be a joy to include a cabin visit to my bucket list, but I'm afraid of all the hard work that comes with it. Ha,ha. Great personal restraint to ration those Vonnie's World Famous Cherry Pies! I enjoyed the Hawk's Pond footage with the dragonflies. Where I live, I see bright orange ones normally, but I also saw a rare, vivid blue one which was special to me. Thanks, as always, for the video, Martin. After more than a month at the cabin, it's back to Vonnie...and more of her World Famous Cherry Pies.

Welcome!! A little explanation of the time table. I can't upload from the cabin so when I get home the series gets started. This trip was 35 days ending on June 15, 2020. Two more Sat. morning videos and then a break to late Oct. when I will start the series from an upcoming visit to the cabin.
Martin, that butterfly in the slowmotion, by Hawks Pond, was wanting some of Von's, cherry pie to.Great job on, capturing the dragon fly & the wind blowing ripples on the pond, in slow motion!!! I enjoyed that!! Well, thanks for the video. Do take care. (Fl.)
It’s been a great trip and fantastic to watch over breakfast on a Saturday morning. Interesting to hear that your bugs were less than normal. I went for summer holiday to see the In-Laws in Finland in July, where I am usually seen as a great delicacy of Scottish imported beef by the Bugs, this year there were a fraction of the normal numbers. I counted on one hand the bites I received. Stay safe Marty, and we will see you on your next trip!
Here in Newfoundland, we call those flies stouts. Pretty annoying and take a bite out of you if you don’t drive them away in time. Great video as usual!
I grew up in Minnesota and the Minnesota State Bird is the Mosquito. "In the winter" they say Northern Minnesota is not hell,.... but you can see hell from there. 8-)
Hi Martin Sad to see the end of your summer visits at the cabin..again loved every new video you made this summer ....any idea when you will be returning to the cabin? Have a nice evening and safe return to Illinois..
Loved the video .... If bark peeling was an olympic event, you'd get a medal. lol. I enjoy the time at the cabin too. Thanks for taking us along. I've reported problems to YT also but they NEVER do anything. Someone named their channel the same as mine (just separated the words which is against the community rules) and after a couple of years, they've done nothing ! BTW - Have you ever fished in Hawks Pond ? I sure would. Take care and be safe.
Well it is September here in Oregon, the worst run state in the union, fires are manly in western part of the state but the smoke here is so thick that I am concerned about doing things outside! Been here about seven weeks while my wonderful wife has been in Texas dealing with hurricane damage, insurance co., and contractors. I will hate to leave this place of solitude but am missing my wife and grandkids! Look forward to your fall videos! All the best to a fellow cabinare!
Ben D well I don’t see riots people burning down builds with no consequences! Businesses moving to Texas for safety! Jobs a great economy etc. But you are entitled to your opinion!
It has been fun watching back on June. Hunting season has started here but the temps remain in the mid 30's C. way too hot to hunt. Too many wasps around to get meat out safely. When that butterfly first came into the shot, I thought it was skunk running past you. I am looking forward to future episodes. If you are open to it, I would love to see footage of your hunts this year. It is interesting to me to see how people hunt in different parts of the world. Thanks for sharing.
I plan on doing some hunt videos on our other channel. No killing shown but just the style of how I hunt in Illinois, the land of big Whitetail bucks. th-cam.com/channels/Tzlpjaet6reJ5Lz9tIAyMA.html?
*How are those Gray Jays doing Martin? Mine have started winter caching already, I have a freezer full of goodies I've been saving for them, just waiting for the temperature to drop so they can move it to their tree-freezers*
We use screen tents when needed. The new guest cabin will have a porch that can be temporarily sealed with screen. I want to be able have a clear view most of the year so no real screened porch.
on Shawn James' Self Reliance channel, he used a sort of hard vinyl or plastic "nose cone" at the pulling end - much easier skid without snagging in the dirt or on other trees. just sayin' that's all. thanks always for your vids!!
If you ever wanted 35 days at the cabin, 2020 was a perfect time to do it!! Are you going on your canoeing trip this year? I still watch the cooking video from last year, it amazes the meals you put out while out there.
We wanted to but the Canadian border is still closed and what Manitoba has to offer has me too spoiled to try to match it here in the U.S. ( Canadian wilderness canoeing will do that to you)
Martin, what percentage of the woods around the cabin consist of Tamarack would you guess . I ask the question because I was thinking of the impact on the area after those Larch Beatles have been through there. Thanks for the great video, as always I really enjoyed it.
The Tamarack are scattered thinly and then increase in some areas to 90%. Young Tamarack still spring up and the White Cedar and Black Spruce come up too. Most of the Tamarack in my area are in 10 to 30 acre patches. Soil type and drainage contribute to the isolation. Any really big areas of 100 acres or more of concentrated Tamarack were logged several years ago for pulp. Locals like to go out to these areas with a firewood permit after the logger leaves and fill their trucks with the 2-4 inch tree tops that are left in piles at the end of an operation.
I've watched Martin's video's for quite some time, but never posted till now. Hopefully someone reads this, but I was wondering how do you gain permission to have a little cabin like this up in the Northwoods? Is this privately owned land in the middle of a national forest? Grandfathered in and handed down? However it was acquired it's so nice. Thanks for posting all the video's Martin!
This was private property that I was fortunate in being able to acquire. Most of the other lands were once private but went back for taxes owed and other programs.
I can't wait to see the snow dog in action. I admit, I'm skeptical it will pull those logs. But, if so, I know you'll come up with something to get the job done. Are you doing a fall trip?
Fall trip for sure. I feel properly set up the Snowdog will have no trouble moving those logs. The packed path will be the important thing to get established. At least the front end of the log will be on a little sled so it does not dig in.
Toughest part is leaving. Small piece of life. Do you think you could rough it there full time? I guess you go to Ely or Dilluth for supplies? The good and bad for me is no cell or internet so hard for full time.
I do not think I would like it for life. A one year visit to experience all the changes I could do one time. After a month it is home and the days fly by.
Hey Martin that bear sure is a cheeky fellow sneaking a look on youtube to see where you hide your wife's world famous cherry pies love watching your videos ..
These Larch Beetles only kill the Tamarack (American Larch.) A few years ago while splitting wood with a wedge and maul I had a piece from the mushroom fly off and slice through a finger like a razor blade. Danger everywhere around the woods.
Hello Martin, maybe I'm not paying attention as usual, but what time of year is this video shot? being from a wee tiny Northern Ireland I can't figure out your seasons. I enjoy your videos hope all goes well with your new guest cabin plans.
I cannot upload from the cabin so when I get home I start the series. This video is from about June 10. Snow melts at the cabin in April. Usually May is like Ireland but more sun and then hot until Sept. First snows early Oct. and all frozen Dec. to March.
. Speaking of caring -- Assure us, please Martin, when you're doing your logging you are taking along a well charged phone. We all know there are dangers, and we do all love you enough to give a damn. . Don't just show us when you're safe at home. Show us when you're with your logs.

You can see him in this Sat.'s video, still eating my cooking and doing the dishes in return.
Just minnows in the beaver ponds.
Going to miss your videos.
More to come! I have two more to go in this series and then new ones in late Oct.
Quite magical!
That is a good take on how special that area is.
You take care.
You do the same my video friend!
I'd say Texas is the worst run state in the "union".

I would come and help drag those logs with you...just an invite is all I would need!!!
Stay tuned, I think the Snowdog will do the pulling but there may be a cabin raising sometime.
*How are those Gray Jays doing Martin? Mine have started winter caching already, I have a freezer full of goodies I've been saving for them, just waiting for the temperature to drop so they can move it to their tree-freezers*
I will find out soon. This generation of Canada Jays have not been the foods hounds like others.
You sure do keep those windows clean.
I like the shock effect that has on some visitors.
Martin: Ever think about a screened porch? The bugs have to be obnoxious.
Love the place.
We use screen tents when needed. The new guest cabin will have a porch that can be temporarily sealed with screen. I want to be able have a clear view most of the year so no real screened porch.
That must have been great to spend a month there.
Yes, after a week or two I really settle in and then it get even better.
on Shawn James' Self Reliance channel, he used a sort of hard vinyl or plastic "nose cone" at the pulling end - much easier skid without snagging in the dirt or on other trees. just sayin' that's all. thanks always for your vids!!
I will have something along that line, probably a few options for different conditions.
Love this.
Thanks
Great visit to your Minnesota hideaway. Was that a White Admiral at 10:50'ish?
?? You tell me, I'm into the birds but never tackled the butterflies.
Awesome getaway and series you've created here. Do you ever think about fishing that pond, if there are any fish? Thanks & keep it up!
There are no big fish in there. A lot of minnows but I have never seen any sign of a larger fish.
, 14:05 -- Security through spoookiness.
A little fear goes a long way.
. 1:50 -- My pipe major says, "Practice makes permanent." After trying to correct a time's worth of musical errors, I have learned that the hard way.
( Canadian wilderness canoeing will do that to you)
time to think.
Martin, what percentage of the woods around the cabin consist of Tamarack would you guess .
I ask the question because I was thinking of the impact on the area after those Larch Beatles have been
through there.
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 Thank you for the response and the awesome videos. I really enjoy them.
Where did the summer go? Sad to have it come to an end..
The Seasons of Change (my place) -----> th-cam.com/video/s50Qq02p3io/w-d-xo.html
I will miss summer but not the heat we had here.
I thought I saw something flutter by at 10:45 The Dragonfly that followed looked like a Bald Eagle coming in.
A lesson, do not believe anything you see on an edited youtube video. A little conniving and I could have put the eagle in there.
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 sounds like I would need a small place in a bustling town like Grand Marais
You’re building a guest cabin? Do you have video? I would love to see it.
Our cabin season is about mid October to mid March. The bugs are almost unbearable during the summer.
I am not usually at this one June to mid-Sept. This early June was surprisingly tolerable, some would disagree with all the buzzing they hear.
Hey Martin that bear sure is a cheeky fellow sneaking a look on youtube to see where you hide your wife's world famous cherry pies love watching your videos ..
Sure am glad the bears didn't break into the cabin again.
Same here
What are your plans for flooring?
I hope to use 2 inch thick planks cut from the larger Tamarack. If need be I will bring in a generator and belt sander to make them really nice.
Thank you Martin. How do you do it?
Which part?
You think your wedges are mushroomed enough. 😄 Enjoy your videos. What other trees do bark beetles kill ?
These Larch Beetles only kill the Tamarack (American Larch.) A few years ago while splitting wood with a wedge and maul I had a piece from the mushroom fly off and slice through a finger like a razor blade. Danger everywhere around the woods.
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 oh no! That's too bad! Yes have to be prepared,& pray for protection, try to keep accidents low or none!!
Beers 💘 Cherry Pies 😂😂😂
I love watching your videos, but what state is your cabin located
Top of MN.
It's always a hard time to leave the northwoods.
Yes, those last days are precious.
Always a satellite phone to use in case of trouble.
