Yeah, Ling Fei was a complete idiot in this scene. Her logic can't be explained. She should have figured out that it was the king who was keeping them from getting pregnant, when he rapidly responded, "of course not" in reference to her asking if Consort Shu could actually be pregnant.
Hm, she mentioned that she had already done everything so that she could gain the Empress' favour, but she still wasn't acknowledged by the Empress and the Empress did not directly try to help her. The Empress, on the other hand, did not really see that Concubine Ling begged for her during the Empress' affair scandal with a monk and helped punish the Empress' enemy, Noble Consort Jia. There is a mismatch in how they think, and this is the mismatch that would cause many royal deaths.

He wants eyes all over the palace, to mistreat his empress and get her forgivenesse every time, he even wants to control who gets pregnant and when! He probably liked sleeping with her because he was certain she would not get pregnant. But his plan kept backfiring because the consorts would then do undercover deeds to attack the children, so he ended up with barely any children in the end.
@@iamhomeiamhome He didn't really want her, he just had to take her as a concubine and pay her proper attention so as not to offend the Empress Dowager. Yes, he's gross, but this whole thing with Consort Shu was a "keep your friends close and your enemy closer" kind of situation.
