One gave her passion but burned her badly, while the other gives her comfort as she heals and rests. Williby wouldn't do what Colonel is currently doing: sitting with her and just reading quietly to her in a quiet moment. Passion is nice to have in a relationship, but it burns out quickly and without gentle care to back it up, a marriage is doomed.

When she says 'thank you', he actually looks surprised, it didn't even occur to him that she might see how much he was doing for her, let alone aknowledge it, oh my heart....
Well, she hadn't expressed any gratitude to that point. It was actually kind of irritating! It's like she had to finally grow up and see what life was all about to understand how great he was.

I discover over and over again what a brilliant film this is. The "Colonel Brandon . . . . thank you" moment is so subtle -- for the first time she has noticed him. The tone of both Brandon and Marianne when he is reading to her has changed slightly. She has begun to appreciate him and he is maybe a little playful when he says, "No, for I must away." and "That I cannot tell you. It is a secret." Then, Marianne says, "You will not stay away long(?)" followed by his slight smile.
Brandon's life story is literally the stuff of tragic fantasy love that Marianne was so enamoured with in fiction. He loved someone he was not permitted to have, was forcible separated from her and spent years trying to find even after the fact, only to lose her. The man loves as deeply as she, perhaps more so. So I love that Marianne eventually came to appreciate and love him, they both deserved it. He was everything Willoughby couldn't bring himself to be.
I think this is the main reason Willoughby dislikes Brandon so much. Subconsciously (though he'll never admit it, not even to himself) he knows that Brandon is a much better man than he is. It was really bitter for Willoughby when Marianne married Brandon and they were happy, but I don't feel sorry for him.
Apparently Alan very much wanted this role because he loved it and wanted to play a good guy (and a romantic man) for once. Emma Thompson also very much wanted Alan in the role. He's absolutely perfect in it!
Well, she stopped looking for "Prince Charming" and "Love at First Sight" and realized what she was looking for was there the whole time. It happens a lot in real life.
Ya know, in the DVD commentary, they said that "Thank you" scene is where all the men cried, and I think that is insanely sweet. 🥰 Dudes should be able to express emotion far more often.
My late husband was actually a little annoyed that I brought this tape home for our movie night (back in the bad old days of video stores), but he teared up at this scene, and of course, ended up loving all Jane Austen movies.

This movie was the first time after I lost my boyfriend at Christmas to drowning that pulled me in and made me forget my grief for a short while. I will be forever thankful! A true classic in my book and always a “go-to” for comfort and entertainment.

You can see it clearly here. The actors in the miniseries (can't remember their names) do not have the same chemistry. I could go on a whole rant about it, but I won't. Suffice it to say, their relationship is far more convincing in this movie.

You need to read the book. You may come away with a different understanding of the characters. The movie is fine, and no need for any movie to adhere to the original story, but it's fun to compare. Anyway, I do like the movie AND the book.

Actually (going by this movie), I think Marianne will soon love Brandon even more than she loved Willoughby. Brandon certainly loves her more than Willoughby did. I think they're going to have an extremely happy marriage. Her passion with Willoughby flashed quickly and hot, but that kind of passion often doesn't stand the test of time. Her passion with Brandon took a while to ignite and didn't flare up fast, but it will be warm and steady and last a lifetime.
That's a good thing. Her love for Willoughby was shallow and cheap. She didn't even know him. She and Brandon have more than lust - they are true companions and they have fallen in love with each other's minds. Marriages that endure for a lifetime have passion, but what keeps you together is the friendship and the admiration for each other.
You can probably get it at your local library for a small fee or free. I have borrowed it from my local library until I was able to buy it for my own collection.

There is a bigger time lapse than what you see in the movie. Most of us were childish when we were young. Marianne grew up into a suitable wife for Brandon.
She wasn't expected to be useful in the way and to the degree you suggest. He wanted her love and appreciation, and trust me, once he got it, they were happy. It's a dynamic that I'm familiar with and quite fond of, myself.
Hugh Grant is too old for Edward, Alan Rickman is too old for Brandon, but you didn’t notice. Emma Thompson’s age shouldn’t matter when there’s a 30 year age difference between Rickman and Kate Winslet and people don’t notice
I mean this is realistic for the time. The text clearly says that they are both exceedingly happy and I am fairly certain you are missing the point of Colonol Brandon's backstory. I am pretty sure it was meant to show how similar in personality and interest Brandon and Marianne actually were. I don't think it's right to just go "oh he has baggage, therefore, he was a bad choice of husband" because Austen wrote her characters more nuanced than that. I don't claim to understand it all but I'm also not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

So many people do that today and it eventually backfires as Jane Austen found out herself in real life but she tried to write a fictional story of what happens when one gets with someone who is bath water with a past. To be fair, she did the same with Fanny Price and Henry Crawford. Now in that case, she made it more realistic - neither ended up together and rightly so.

Perhaps Marianne came into his life to lift him out of his baggage which is what Jane Austen intended. Highly inappropriate, that he should be in her bedroom ;), but I'm sure her thank you melted away what little resistance his heart tried to put up.
That’s why he doesn’t go inside, he’s only ever there if she needs medical attention and once she’s better he gives her space. He only stood in the doorway and her own mother was present and nobody’s going to do anything untoward.

No. Self-centered, impulsive, careless, prideful teenage Marianne should not have ended up with with older, wiser, distinguished Colonel Brandon. She would never be challenged to mature, and he would always be the superior doting father/husband with no true partner in life to encourage and help him.
Brandon is mature because he’s way older than her. Are we sure he’s mature when he was younger with Eliza Sr? Give Marianne a break please. Marianne didn’t ask him for help, he just came on his own
There is a bigger time lapse than what you see in the movie. Most of us were childish when we were young. Marianne grew up into a suitable wife for Brandon.
She wasn't expected to be useful in the way and to the degree you suggest. He wanted her love and appreciation, and trust me, once he got it, they were happy. It's a dynamic that I'm familiar with and quite fond of, myself.
The movie was lovely, but Emma Thomson was far, far too old for the part.
Hugh Grant is too old for Edward, Alan Rickman is too old for Brandon, but you didn’t notice. Emma Thompson’s age shouldn’t matter when there’s a 30 year age difference between Rickman and Kate Winslet and people don’t notice

Well, who would you rather have had Marianne settle on?
I mean this is realistic for the time. The text clearly says that they are both exceedingly happy and I am fairly certain you are missing the point of Colonol Brandon's backstory. I am pretty sure it was meant to show how similar in personality and interest Brandon and Marianne actually were. I don't think it's right to just go "oh he has baggage, therefore, he was a bad choice of husband" because Austen wrote her characters more nuanced than that. I don't claim to understand it all but I'm also not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
@@lelavelion1356 He was no baby and their being happy is irrelevant. It is clear in the novel he has a dark past and he’s only with Marianne because she reminds him of his ex. If only Brandon had the wisdom to disconnect from Marianne and move on with grace. Sadly; he did not. Even more sadly, Marianne settled for that happy but soiled bath water. So many people do that today and it eventually backfires as Jane Austen found out herself in real life but she tried to write a fictional story of what happens when one gets with someone who is bath water with a past. To be fair, she did the same with Fanny Price and Henry Crawford. Now in that case, she made it more realistic - neither ended up together and rightly so.
@@EmilyGloeggler7984 Would you rather she wounded up with Willoughby who turned out to be untrustworthy? Col Brandon may have a lot of guilt over Eliza he didn't want Marianne to end up the same way. He also didn't pursue her knowing she had preferred Willoughby over him. He had been respectful. Marianne for her part was outright too judgemental of Col Brandon because of his age. Perhaps Marianne came into his life to lift him out of his baggage which is what Jane Austen intended. Marianne never loved by halves and she was devoted to Col Brandon like she was to Willoughby bathwater be damned.
