      Luckily he played on Broadway and Arielle was in Australia hahaha. That would've been weird if they were in the same production as their respective characters.

    I saw her as jasmine in may and she was absolutely amazing - the even more amazing thing was that Aladdin was an understudy and she still had INSANE chemistry with him! She and Major Attaway made the show!

    People are making a big deal on the fact that Arielle Jacobs is not middle eastern. A black man plays Kristoff in the broadway production of frozen. So why can’t a Filipino girl play princess Jasmine? Race is something you are born into and it shouldn’t determine what jobs you can do or what role you play

    Historically all of the characters in Hamilton are white. People of color play many of the characters. In broadway, it is okay to play a character outside of your race, ethnicity, and gender.

    Okay guys...she’s not white! Lol but seriously...The magic of theatre is that you can seriously play anything/anyone no matter what race you are. But okay...yes you have to look the part (or at least what the casting directors want) but that doesn’t mean you have to be just like the character. Although it would be very nice to have someone play a role that is the same ethnicity as theirs, it’s not the #1 priority in theatre =]

    I have no issue with Arielle playing jasmine- she's an amazing singer and captures jasmines spirit perfectly. I don't think that the roles of jasmine or Aladdin should be restricted to middle easterns but I do wish that there was more middle eastern representation in broadway, particularly in this production. Although there is debate about where Aladdin is actually set, the story that broadway had adapted is disney's version which is set in the Middle East and borrows elements of ancient Arab culture and folklore so allowing actual arabs to represent that hence making the show a platform for more inclusivity in the world of musical theatre would be a wonderful thing, in my opinion. Not hating on Arielle, I think she's wonderfully talented- but I do hope the one to take the role after her will be arab or partially arab...

    Agrabah is a fictional place. And while it derives it’s influence from middle eastern culture, it is not a real place in the Middle East. It also carries influence from Asian countries (I.e India with Raja the tiger) and the musical draws on influences from the east in general. So being upset that Jasmine is played by an Asian woman is just plain silly.

    • @Notnoot2
      @Notnoot2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Paige McCrary it’s not silly because the story of Aladdin is a big part of Arabic culture and is central piece of Arabic literature in our culture!! I’m not talking about the Disney movie I’m talking about the Arabic story of Aladdin from the Arabic book “The Arabian Nights” this is where Disney took the story from. This book was written by Middle Eastern authors and takes place in the Middle East, it is our culture.

    • @lizsmare640
      @lizsmare640 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Nada Suleman the story was actually not in the original book and was added by a French translator who heard it from a Syrian man. The story takes place in China and has many Chinese characters. Aladdin himself is Chinese.

    • @MS-zi3pw
      @MS-zi3pw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Liz’s Mare there are no Chinese characters.. the names, the culture, the greetings all are Arabs. Jasmine real name is baderbadour the most arab common name ever.. and only arabs would call themselves that. The Chinese setting was just an ignorant setting where the French traveler didn’t know how to label the region. He wanted to make it more exotic. The orginal was supposed to be in Baghdad and the Disney movie was inspired by the thief of Baghdad with jaffar the villain and Abu the human thief.. this orginal and the Disney version is 100 percent Arab. Like seriously do some real research people

    People keep complaining she's not suppose to have that type of hair, her makeup is terrible, and she doesn't match Jasmine's race. Hamilton has dark skinned people play men and women that were white, nobody cares. Frozen has Kristoff played by a dark person no one gives a damn. You won't always see Broadway match the movie. The directors added new songs to Frozen the Broadway and people loved it. So if you wanna see the story match up then go to Disney. They have the one you'd probably liked.

    • @lanap4924

  • @andrimarbi

    Arielle is incredibly talented and Broadway requires skilled acting, singing and performing. Jasmine was voiced by a white woman and a Filipino singer (Lea Salonga) and they both made her iconic thanks to their talent. It’s not always about race, stop looking for reasons to bring women down.

    although i agree that asian ethnicities are not interchangeable, the diversity of characters in broadway is very limited compared to hollywood and poc are almost never casted in roles that are suited for all and any ethnicity. so if you were to say that people should stick to roles that reflect their ethnicity, many non-white broadway actors would be broke. so i wouldnt put the blame on the actors for wanting to make a living, i’d blame the industry for just not being inclusive enough. just because a character started out with a white actor doesnt mean that it has to stay that way. correct me if im wrong though.

    • @bigred8432
      @bigred8432 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What else does she need? The Genie is a magical creature, Jasmine is a human - why would she need any make up design other than this?

    • @pepsi592
      @pepsi592 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ian Smith I’m just saying that on broadway, when you’re performing in front of a huge number of people, the audience having quite a distance between the performers can barely see their faces, which is why makeup needs to be heavy so that the audience can see it. After all, Jasmine is the female lead, but I ain’t complaning. Her makeup is still stunning.

    • @bigred8432
      @bigred8432 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The point of make up is to enhance the actors features not for the make up itself to be seen. The idea for a character such as Jasmine is to appear as though she isn't wearing any.
      Regardless you can't judge theatre make up, unless it's from a seat in a theatre and what this actress is wearing has been massively toned down for camera.

    • @pepsi592
      @pepsi592 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    People on here are discussing the issue of race and I figured I'd join the conversation. I'm Filipino therefore I am a person of color. I love it when people of color are able to get such amazing roles and get the spotlight. But the problem here with the casting choice of Arielle as Jasmine is the fact that Jasmine is a middle-eastern woman and not an eastern Asian woman. By casting someone outside of the appropriate race, it gives the sense that there was no consideration of the setting and appropriation of middle-eastern women. Albeit, there may not be as much middle-eastern women on Broadway, but that just means that they need more representation in this medium.
    You can't use Hamilton as a counter-argument for this. Lin Manuel Miranda's purpose was to represent the culture of America which is made of all races, colors and people hence the choice to cast American characters plus some as people of color with the exception of King George. Agrabah, on the other hand although fictional, is made up of middle-eastern characters and so should focus on middle-eastern performers. That's like if Mulan were to be turned into a musical and had a black woman or a white woman or an Indian woman in the role instead of an eastern Asian actress. It doesn't fit the setting at all of China, nor does it give the proper representation of Chinese and eastern Asian women.

      Something about her voice and acting. Obviously she’s talented!! Just not the person I would have liked to see as Jasmine

      I think she was AMAZING! Her voice was so similar to what I always imagined a real life Jasmine would sound like. I absolutely loved her!

    Her voice is too whiny... it has like a yodeling sound. Jasmines voice is more solid and not so jumpy. And yes. I think they should have casted an Arabic girl or at least an Arabic LOOKING girl for the part.
