- Citing the late poet June Jordan, political activist Angela Davis stresses the importance of Palestine for other social justice movements.

There has been a long history of solidarity between Palestinians and Black Americans, and these last few weeks have been no exception.
While Israel continues its bombardment of Gaza, numerous Black activists in the United States have come together to demonstrate their solidarity with Palestinians.
These two places are more than 6,000 miles away from each other, with very different histories. So what’s behind this common recognition of a shared struggle?
On UpFront, renowned political activist Angela Davis speaks with Marc Lamont Hill on the history and meaning of Black American solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

There is a strong risk that if the Western powers are seen to condone these actions by the Israeli IDF towards the Palestinians, that rogue nations like north Korea, China, Yemen, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, Sudan and Russia will do whatever they wish to their weaker neighboring states and groups within their own borders. And we westerners cannot criticize nor help them anymore because we no longer stand on the upper ground.

From 1960 to 1990 their activities in South Africa were classified by law as “unlawful” and therefore illegal, but the ANC, as the leading anti-apartheid movement from exile, had great influence on events in South Africa. Many Palestinians would agree to a 2 state solution - Palestine would be their own political entity that would rely on themselves and their government for everything, as opposed to their current status of being occupied by isreal and having to rely on them for basically everything. Or a single state solution of isreal adopting the people of Gaza into their own state and granting them citizenship with equal rights to their own people, freedom of movement, the rights to vote in democratic elections, food water electricity and internet, etc etc etc… but it has been very well documented that isreal, and more specifically it’s prime minister bb netinyahu is absolutely unwilling to accept either of those options. This is because he wants to maintain and uphold the current status quo of their predominantly white, Jewish ethnostate. You can look this up, I’m so serious. If you copy and paste “While refusing to endorse two-state solution, Netanyahu says Israel won’t annex West Bank” into your google or bing the first result should be an article from the times of isreal. (Btw the article is from 5 yrs ago and isreal has gone back on their words and annexed the West Bank, introducing ILLEGAL settlements under international law)

Personally as a Muslim, I believe the Jewish people are entitled to a homeland. Somewhere they can make their pilgrimage to, to learn about their faith. They should stick to the borders that were drawn under the original UN mandate, and isreal should surrender the illegally occupied territory the stole from the Palestinians. Even though the Jewish people have faced persecution throughout history, it is terrible that they are turning around and coming atrocities against another group of people, that is disgusting that they are forgetting their own history. anyway, The majority of isrealis have a dual nationality/citizenship that they came to isreal from before hand, be it America, Poland, Germany, what have you, so they can go back to where they came from. I found myself on a "Free Angela Davis" demonstration in Paris in 1970 while on leave from the RAF in England, then went back to base with an Angela Davis poster which I put on the barrack room wall. I was taken away by Special Branch (military SIB) and spent a week being interrogated! Happy days...

Angela Davis is correct about hope. It makes us look like fools to cling to it until their is a break through. All systems of oppression hinge on stripping the captive of this human gasoline. I have even made statements like, "There is nothing we can do." It was a moment of weakness, and it is not true. Evil never endures.

Just thinking, US and Israel are very close allies who shares many political views. The Palestinians are treated harshly by Israel and black people in the US seems to have the same policy directly against them.

I don't think you need the exact same experience to feel empathy for Palestinians. Just knowing your own experience of oppression gives you a starting point and then using your eyes. Knowing who fails that litmus test isnt surprising given the history of the coutries opposed to a cease fire.

Black people will fight other peoples battles and the Palestinians situation will be fixed and Black will still be in thesame position we've always been in with same issues unfixed. Palestinians don't rally for us. (The situation is terrible that they're in but I always wonder why we support and the same people we support never support us..We did the same with the Urkraine situation too..When has a Urkrainian or a Palestinian in their own country supported black issues..
