Dark History of a Greek Village Lost to Time

- In 2022, I had the opportunity to visit the hidden gem of Greece - Chios. Immediately after leaving the island, I learned of a village built on mountain cliffs in the 11th century. The medieval town of Anavatos flourished in the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires until its demise in the 19th century. In 2023, while in Turkiye, I returned to Chios and visited the incredible abandoned village. Enjoy!

A WTF moment for me, I would never have imagined that I would ever see something about Anavatos, way way back when Alex Haley’s book Roots was released and then made into a movie my father was inspired to search for his roots. Both my parents were Greek and born in Alexandria, his quest to him to Anavatos which had a small aging population then, he discovered that the Chapel was ministered by his great grandfather who was the Greek Orthodox priest there. Anavatos being on the top of the mountain was also the lookout point that kept the villagers aware of invading Ottoman forces. Apparently my great great grandfather went as a missionary to Latvia Lithuania and Russia and was never heard of again.

@@paveltrips I am sad to say that they were lost in time during moving house a few times, the photos he took were of a chapel on Anavatos which had the icons painted directly on the rock walls, it was a tiny place and not the larger one in your video, my grandfather and his 4 sisters ended up in Alexandria, I sincerely thank you for your work, well done brother…..

The 82 year old lady had the keys to the small church right next to the main square you met her at.
My wife's family is from there, going back this summer.

I think scooter or car rental scale with demand and time of year. If you go in the low season they charge a little less. That may be why you were charged less than last year.
Maybe. It was mid June compare to mid May 🤷🏼♂️
