    Great video man. As someone who’s watched plenty of your replays to help learn and understand certain games better, I’m glad to see you make a video like this for the community. Was also stoked to see some of the concepts overlap with how I’ve approached games and found them work for me. I’ll be honest I rarely feel like I hate shmups even when I’m pissed at one, which is inevitable 😂. Just having some freaking perspective and compassion for yourself when struggling against a clearly brutal game and remembering why you play goes a long way. And you’re right on mental state is huge. I’ve found if I recently meditated or am just feeling super calm and balanced that day, I can just zone in on a game and play so much better. Because you’re just into it and not getting riled up at every little thing. The mind just thinks more clearly. If I’m in a bad mood I won’t touch hard games with a ten foot pole. That’s when it’s nice to grab something you’ve already smoked a hundred times and just enjoy playing on autopilot for the thrill of it or music or whatever. By the time it’s over I usually feel better. Smoking an easy shmup from time to time and not feeling guilty about it is my recipe for self care 😂. Anyway man, congrats on reaching another sub milestone. This year at least 1K more 🙌🏻

      Really good content here, I'm used to seeing novice advice, but it's not often we see more advanced techniques. I really enjoyed the consistency part, it's really interesting that we can do hard sections, only that we can't do it every single time.

    Amazing to see a snippet of my Embodiment of Scarlet Failure video pop up like this more than 15 years later. To think I initially made it as a throwaway joke video. It's like you say, when you suffer a heavy game over you gotta respond to it positively, and my response to that failure was to think "I could make a pretty silly video out of this one day, better save the replay."

    • @ASE-PRL

    Legitimately a very helpful video for a super small niche of players I consider myself a part of. I'd agree that the hardest part of the shmup journey is overcoming salt and delusions of becoming a bigshot celebrity player. Seems like a lot of people in the shmup communities I've joined daily post hella salt about a bullshit boss instead of enjoying the game. I used to have this mindset in different communities until I learned to just enjoy my own improvement and drop games that were too hard for me.

    Great vid! Gonna second the reverse stage practice approach. I'm still shit but I can get to my usual shit level in games faster now. And it feels nice when you get into that final boss practice groove, sometimes going back to the previous stages even feels like a step down in the fun factor when with the forward-practice approach I dread having to practice the last boss.

    Awesome guide! I feel like a lot of times when I see newer players hit a wall it has less to do with the game itself and more to do with "meta" concepts like how to approach a problem section and break it down into smaller chunks, or how to keep a positive attitude while playing. You do a great job explaining all of these things and more. Congrats on the 2k subs! Please keep the content coming :)

    really good video, i never realized how all over the place my practice sessions are. i always thought that just having a lot of savestates or other tools was all there was to it. but i was just practicing whatever i felt like, and stopped whenever i arbitrarily decided i was confident on the section.
    its also made me realize that a lot of burnout i've felt recently is just because i forgot why i started playing in the first place. i started playing to impress myself, and nobody else. (and also because dodging bullet is le fun) but right after my mystic square lnn, i immediately started riding this high of wanting to only do stuff that i believed would be seen as impressive or cool to other people, instead of stuff that i actually wanted to do. but i ended up just stagnating for months. im really glad this video could give me a nice mental reset on that front.

    Fantastic video, particularly the stuff on mental game. I'm definitely guilty of playing while tired or sick and getting frustrated, so I'm going to take that advice to heart and schedule my shmup sessions a little earlier in the day or before work and see how it goes. Hadn't seen your channel before and really enjoyed this vid, subscribed :)

  • @1337Plummy
    @1337Plummy 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Wonderful video, can tell you put a lot of effort into it, was really insightful and funny. It's nice how you highlighted what goes on 'outside' the game, the thinking and learning it takes to become acquainted with a game-- you can generally understand a lot of how to play by watching a good player, but you can't get how they think about the game while watching them. It's neat how you highlight the values or decisions that experienced players build up to and even how they build up to those. I remember the time you came into my chat when I was streaming DOJ and you asked me to please use laser on boss instead of shot xd
    I suppose a few questions I do have that are related if you squint hard enough is: how do you decide on a goal or what game you want to play? As a novice, there are so many games that differ and after watching so many or doing credit feed run-throughs just to see if I'd like the game, its hard to know like "hmm should I check out Raiden today or stick with DOJ or Garegga". Same thing with like developing my own unique "taste" or "values", I don't really know what I want out of a shmup yet because there are so many options. (though maybe the answer to this is 'Just Play game :)")
    The other question is how to learn the mechanical details of the game. Though I guess that comes down to just googling the game or looking at the shmupwiki page on it. Or watching a replay to understand how to trigger certain things or etc.

    This good video. I got into the genre on a whim and kept playing the games cuz I found them fun. I went from I could care less to 1ccs to wow I’m getting p close to this one.
    I can’t imagine forcing yourself to play these games while not enjoying them 💀 Mental thing is real if I can take an entire bottle of xans just to remove my anxiety and nervousness but without knocking me out I can probably beat some games I’m really close on like Blue Revolver hyper mode and Mushi original.
    I think watching replays is fine for the most part. I usually watch them after getting close to beating a game to see how other ppl approach it a level and that’s how I find things like the 1up in stage 3 of Mushi. It’s like summoning in dark souls do it if you want who gives a shit.

    solid stuff. That anti replay thing is the dumbest shit I've heard. Japanese players were sharing footage back in the 90s, there's no way they could have hit those scores so fast without sharing information. Anyway, your run is your run, unless you're TAS bot, you're not going execute some pixel perfect DOJ run, top players always have some differences and quirks in routing you'd notice if you would actually take the time to watch the footage.

    So if I starting "playing for enjoyment" with each bullet hell game I own and keep credit feeding how am I supposed to learn to 1cc any of these games? It has nothing to do with my mental state. It is just just how these games are all designed. THEY ARE ALL ARCADE GAMES. THEY WERE ORIGINALLY MADE TO MAKE $$$$.
