You have such an eloquent way with words that makes me feel like I’m actually seeing and hearing all the beautiful things with all your hikes without leaving my space 😊I think that the “Trail Bros” are like a wolf pack and all the incredible memories you all share from the miles you have traveled . Well done Chad🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Leslie! I really appreciate the kind words. I do love my Trail Bros, that's for sure! I don't know what I would do without them these days. I feel lucky to have great people to share the trail with. I hope you're doing well!
Just discovered this video, and allow me to echo previous amazement at your lack of subscribers. I am fortunate enough to be from Haywood County, and I've roamed these mountains for most of my life. I hiked Mt. Guyot only once in my early 20's, but passed it numerous other times on the AT in the years since. Watching your extremely well shot and narrated video makes me want to go back.
Thanks so much. I appreciate the kind words, and I'm glad to hear that I've given you some inspiration to get back out there. It's still a pretty wild bushwhack to the top of Guyot. I'll just keep plugging away and trying to get that subscriber count up 😉
Always a treat when I get the notification for the new BtC joint!! Your wordsmithing truly is a gift. I could not agree with you more about the search and sense of exploration. That is what keeps me coming back. Great cinematography, framing, and music selections as well. Bloopers had me rolling 😂🤣
Thanks, OO! I appreciate the kind words. Wandering around on Mt. Guyot reminded me of all the time I spent wandering around in the woods as a kid. Sometimes I think I go backpacking just to recreate that feeling of discovery. I'd like to do a whole video on that theme at some point. I'm glad to hear you can relate. Man, I think the heat and elevation got to us on this trip, because we were even sillier than normal, haha. Nick just told me that you posted a new video at almost the same time as me, so I'm off to watch it now! Thanks again!
@@beyondthecampfire would like to see a video on that theme. That feeling of discovery is also why it is so enjoyable to bring a someone along for their first backpack. It's one of the joys of backpacking.
Oh brother! What a wonderful video! From the epic intro, to your wonderful narrative, to those great bloopers! I enjoyed every moment reliving such a wonderful adventure! Until next time...! I saw you first comment from "my little garden" and thought to myself, how true their words were!
Thank you brother! I was going to show you their comment and make sure you saw that they thanked you too! I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for sharing the trail and giving me some good blooper material 🤣 See you this weekend!
Wow, brother, you have outdone yourself on this one! There are so many things about your Guyot video that I am wowed by- the new music selections, the “no narration” cold intro, several creative shots that I’ve never seen before, a thoughtful insight into what drove us out into that dense mountaintop wilderness, and a sense of the friendship that was shared by all of us. Thanks for capturing the emotions of this adventure so clearly. Now, onto my more detailed thoughts… - 1:40 This portrait to landscape pan shot fits so well for an intro. You pulled it off so well!! - 1:58 Love the first YT documented homage to the “Trail Tribe” 😊 - 2:08 I still need to figure out how to better blend my map animation into the frame like you have done here. Teach me, Master Davinci! - 2:52 Love the slomo glowing leaves in the canopy above us here. It also fits your words about the heat that day. - 3:01 Excellent literary foreshadowing with the “sky island mountaintops” to come. - 3:33 I think I need to invest in that small Manfrotto tripod that you use, because the stability of almost ALL your shots is so good. Maybe I just have shaky hands, but you can hardly tell that most of your work was done handheld. - 3:35 Your channel is becoming more and more known for its macro work. The detail of this shot is INSANE. Outperforms my GH6 shot by a mile! - 4:14 didn’t notice this seed pod sprouting while on the trail, and I wish I had. Another excellent catch by your eye. - 4:52 Yet another epic macro shot. Love these insects inside the rhodo blooms - 5:10 I am glad you kept this extended sequence of this creek crossing in your video. It is a great way to showcase the ruggedness of the trail we were on. Also, poor Kyle lol - 6:50 How naïve of us to think that when we stopped at the Cascades for lunch that we were nearly done for the day. NOPE. Hahaha. I would have died if we didn’t stop here, truly was an oasis. -7:06 I love this sequence of getting Kyle to try his first “trail cheese”. Really cool backpacking moment captured. - 7:16 Amazing reflection of the water off the rhodo leaves. - 7:37 I find it amazing that you got the same zoomed shot of the falls above with your 14-140 as I did with my 100-300. That lens is a versatile workhorse! - 8:07 Crumbling away, indeed. We nearly fell off that dang mountain! - 8:40 “Looked like someone punched a hole in the mountain and wildflowers came spilling out.” Really like the imagery in this quote. - 10:02 Loved the full circle nature of the sky island theme. I felt about as isolated as being on a remote oceanic island haha. - 10:29 Kyle’s pure fuel is oatmeal. That man torched us with practically nothing in his system but oatmeal. Crazy haha. I forogot about this, thanks for capturing it! - 10:44 And that quartz was sweating enough to look like it really was melting! - 11:01 HAHAHAHA I’m definitely glad you left this is in here as part of the main narrative, cause that trail literally kicked us to the ground, but boy is a funny moment too! - 11:11 THAT ZOOM IN THO. MEME WORTHY - 12:36 Gotta rep that all time Peak Refuel great Beef Stroganoff! Also, the relief of day’s end was palpable inside that shelter. Everyone was so ready to be done haha. - 13:29 I am also glad that you caught the audio of this convo more up close than mine. My camera was too far away to capture it clearly. Cool reflection by Kyle on his first trip. - 15:06 Love the sly TWSS tucked in here, hehehe - 15:36 This is a really cool shot to show the steepness of the ascent - 15:40 Did we ever find out what kind of plant that was? - 15:44 What a tangled mess of trees. Jeez. - 17:09 I really like this slomo walking shot. How high did you have your FPS cranked up for this? - 17:41 This probably my favorite part of the video. Your prose on the special magic of “why” we did this trip, and the elements that keep bringing us back into the woods is so insightful, and a page out of my own heart as well. You could not have written this any better. - 18:02 “Sense of place” is a legit term in environmental education; that was a heavy theme in some of my grad classes up in Montana. Wendell Berry talks a lot about it, too with his farm. - 19:31 Love this shot. Feels like it belongs in the backpacking version of Top Gun. - 20:02 The downbeat of the music coinciding with Kyle’s trekking pole raise is epic. - 20:05 Damn that was a hard high five! Did that hurt yalls hand?! Hahahaha - 20:26- 22:02 This is why you are the Blooper King. We kneel before your comedic greatness. Bravo! Bravo! I had just as much fun watching it the second time as a did the first, which also shows where this video will be heading in the future= multiple viewings. Thanks again for your attention to detail, your commitment to quality in your shots and clarity in your words, and most of all, your friendship! Can’t’ wait for the next peak bag! Hope this comment finds you on your Covid-Bed feeling better!
Thank you so much! This comment definitely lifted my spirits during this awful week. I appreciate you taking the time help a brother out. I always enjoy reading your detailed comments. Thanks for taking the time out from preparing for a last-second change of plans! -I'm glad you liked the close-up --> mountain vista shot. I've been wanting to try that one for a while! I think this was a good place for it. - Now that I've mentioned the Trail Tribe, I should change my YT cover photo to the one of us with the Deal With It glasses. - The fade around the edges of the map is super easy! It's easier to show through a screenshot, so I'll send you a message. - As for the steady handheld shots, the way you hold the camera can make a big difference too. Also, I'm really picky about the shakiness these days, so I ditch a lot of clips if I can't get them to stabilize properly, haha. - The snail shot is my favorite from this video! Watching him move is hypnotic. I just love getting this type of shot that's so different from what you'd normally see at human eye-level. - I was tempted to cut up the stream-crossing clip because it's so long, but I like the tension of wondering if we're all going to make it across, haha. And I know, we really gave Kyle a trial by fire (or water...)! - I feel like Trail Cheese is a big part of Trail Tribe culture 😂 - I hope you end up enjoying the 14-140 as much as I do! It sure gets the job done for being a relatively inexpensive lens. - The shot of us resting on the "sky island" and the one the following morning where Kyle is talking about our misadventures are good examples of what I want in a "no narration, all dialogue" video. I was happy to find that I had quite a few of those shots from this trip. - I felt a little bad that my first reaction to seeing you on your back was "get it on camera!" and not "help him up, you idiot!" 😅 You have my permission to shoot every second of it the next time I take a spill 😂 - You're totally right about the shelter vibe, haha. The shared "done with it" feeling made for a cozy evening. As did the beef stroganoff 😍 - I can't believe you noticed the very faint TWSS!! 🤣🤣 - I think the mystery plant is called bluebead. - For the slowmo walking shot, I think I was at 60fps. - I'm glad the ending narration resonated with you so well. I figured it would, since we've talked about similar things before 😉 I'd actually like to do a whole video around this theme, where I can get more into the details of what I'm talking about. It's interesting that you mentioned Wendell Berry because I originally had a quote from him in my narration at this point! - If I ever do an 80s themed parody trailer for my channel, you're going to see this shot again 😁 - Now that you mention it, I do think that high-five stung a little 😂 - I wouldn't be the Blooper King without you guys providing me with great material 🤣 I really appreciate all the kind words and detailed comments. It means a lot to me. As does your friendship, of course! Now that we've done the tallest peaks in the Smokies, I feel like our next peak bag might have to be somewhere else. Hmmm.... Sorry again to throw a wrench into this weekend's plans, but I'm happy to know that you and Nick are out in the woods, at least. We'll be back on the trail (or water) soon enough! I hope you guys enjoy your weekend, and I'll talk to you soon. Thanks again, brother!
Yes, very doable. It would make a reasonable day hike if you started at the Cosby campground and hiked up Snake Den Ridge to Guyot. Steep, but no worse than the route we used. We just felt like beating ourselves up with some extra miles, haha. Thanks for watching the video!
You found the "Crown of the Smokies" Mt Guyot best route up is straight up from the AT. The way ya'll came, pass the little branch a little further it's a short but steep ascend. but it's better than going through the downed tree area. I've summited Guyot probably a dozen times since by SB6K a few years ago. It's my favorite summit on the SB6K challenge as well. Great video amazing editing. You definitely need more subscribers with content this good.
Thanks for the kind words! If I'm remembering correctly, our original plan was to find the route you're describing. But then we started seeing orange ribbons in the trees, and we followed them instead. They didn't get us very far, but we decided we couldn't go wrong if we just kept heading upwards, haha. We all loved the search and the summit. I'll go back for sure. Thanks for the sub, too!
@@beyondthecampfire ha I pulled a few ribbons earlier this year cause they were in the wrong place. Yes it is fun to seek the summits. Many of the Smokies 6k peaks are off trail hikes. Thank you as well.
