  • The Miramichi River is famous for fly fishing. Traditionally this pertains to Atlantic Salmon, but in recent years the population of striped bass has risen to unprecedented levels. No license required, this 3 week "open season" for fishing "stripers" has become quite the spectacle in Eastern Canada.
This year marked the inaugural "Miramichi Striper Cup" which has already proven itself to be a classic in the making. There are so many striped bass that the law has been put into effect that anyone with a fishing rod is permitted to keep 1 bass per day during the fishing season.

you say there is no other fishery like Miramichi for striped bass. The Miramichi striped bass fishery is literally the least significant in terms of the striped bass migration along the east coast, as it is towards the northern most reaches of their range. Places such as The gulf of Maine, Cape Cod, and Long Island Sound far surpass the Miramichi for striped bass in terms of number of large breeding fish during the spring and summer months that test the overall proficiency of the population and fishery. As the seasons switch, the mid atlantic states hold most of the population of striped bass along the east coast as they winter off N. Carolina and around the Chesapeake.

Look at current April Issue of Fly Fisherman. The run is doubling every year, so even 3 years ago it was much smaller.
