      @Mr Liquid Devil Indeed when I was in US 2 years back I was about to get scammed in name of IRS, initially I was convinced as they had all my details including my passport number, but luckily I went a near by police station near my office and after listening to the call the officer told me its a scam and not to answer their call.

    • @ALXandroATS
      @ALXandroATS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +154

      @Mr Liquid Devil Yes, at this point you have to assume every Indian is a scammer, to some degree. Which is a real shame because Indian immigrants are quick to assimilate into our culture. They go out of their way to adopt and embrace the American culture, especially when it comes to sports and Indian children are always spelling bee champions.
      Just wish people in India would take these scammers seriously and put a stop to these shady operations.

      They definitely say they attempt to stop it for publicity reasons. Each Target is drastically diffrent, at my target we were allowed to deny people from buying gift cards over $250 if we suspected scams. I worked there for 2 years and they always had that policy, but I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere with a lot of elderly people. I can see how it would be much more difficult to dictate if it's a scam or not I much larger city where people do regularly buy $500 worth of gift cards.

    • @annemary9680
      @annemary9680 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      That Target lady is just a representation of every institution/agency's attitudes. Law enforcement has every ability to put a stop to these scams overnight, even without cooperation from Indian authorities, but they don't do it because there's no financial incentive for them to care. In Target's case, they get money from people buying their gift cards, so they couldn't care less if it was for legitimate reasons or to give to scammers. They get their money either way.

However, their slimeshit director Rajesh Goenka (owner of RMV) and his skank wife (co-director) were, according to Jim Browning, not arrested & prosecuted along with his henchmen due to having too many connections in the area.

      I think his point was not to defend the scammer, even if he did, but to mention that although he saved some vicims from disaster, he also destroyed their computers, which is a crime, even if it is justified in this case.
      it is a bit of a weird way of saying it, given that destroying a pc isnt great on the morality thing, but saving someone from going bankrupt and having to essentially reinvent themselves to be safe from these pricks in india is nothing short of heroic, maybe even saving a few lives, given the weight of it all.
      and although I'm usually against destroying a computer, given that I don't usually know anything about the person losing their pc, this is one of the few cases where I'm all for it, Especially after seeing what happened.

Even had my roommate pretend to be my banker. Partly out of boredom but I figure if I’m on the phone with them they can’t be scamming someone else. The longer I delay them the better. I tried to get multiple people in the office involved by calling the intro person back and the second and third person at the same time and pretending to be confused about who I’m supposed to talk to. How she immediately distrusts him rings very loud with what we deal with at work sometimes. I work for a web hosting company, and quite often we'll get a new customer that takes advantage of our free migrations service. They'll be coming from one of a number of our competitors that, and I hate to say this, but it looks exactly like they're trying to sabotage anyone leaving. Sometimes from killing the backup process to copy over their accounts, or if they offer domain registration act like they don't know what dns is when the customer needs help making changes on their end.
      More often than not, even after complaining about the reason they're leaving the old host and how that had gone on for so long and been so bad, they will take everything the old host says as pure gospel. Absolute truth, no need for any proof or anything. Whereas every single character of every single word that we say requires it's own full 3 page thesis to defend it. It frustrates me beyond belief.

Most places like Walgreens/CVS have the "dont buy gift cards for people you don't know" signs everywhere and even displayed on the credit card machine display. Gas stations however I have not seen much warning about scams but also gas stations now have "Bitcoin ATMs" in most of them. The scammers instead need to instruct people to visit gas stations which have less of these warnings to get the success rate back up.

      well, even a senior would get freaked out when the pc is doing things without their doing or control, I would be more wary than the scammer too if I found out a hacker was in total control of my pc, not many people outside of the internet are really all that aware of the social engineering aspect of this type of thing, they only ever really see from movies and tv the technical side of things, and see how badly things can get screwed up with the technical side of things.

      They don't want to admit to themselves that they fell for a scammer "because they are too smart for that". People don't want to be seen as a fool. Even after they find out they've been scammed many won't even report it because they are too ashamed of themselves.
      When someone reaches out to help them, their cognitive dissonance kicks in persuading them that a new person is a bad person because there's no way they could fall for a scam like that. It's the same mental phenomena that keeps people in bad relationships or even chasing after losses in the stock market.
      In a way, this is similar to the Backfire Effect.

      That's because, while talking to the scammer, the victim has no suspicion of anything going wrong. But, as soon as the baiter mentions a scam, that idea comes to the front of the victim's mind. Either she's been scammed earlier or she's being scammed right now; if not both! Having no particular ability to discern, the victim assesses that the baiter is 50+% likely to be a scammer.
