Agreed, though i will say that, IMO, the stuff he's doing now, from Pure through to Intruder, is brilliant too. I would also throw Simple Minds' Sons and Fascination & New Gold Dream into the mix too.
He mentions approx 2:25 he was not bothered about the other one, Midge Ure came to Swimdon, England in the 90s and played an acoustic set with some Ultravox materia. Answers to Nothing lyrics Nm Djinm.
I have always believed that John Foxx was a huge influence on David Sylvian's Japan. Shame he never got quite the acclaim as the people that he inspired.
I remember John Foxx sort of dropped out of music and became the world's most prolific producer of images used for public domain for a number of years, or something like that. I guess that is no longer the case though. At any rate, after Ultravox! Foxx had a very successful graphic arts career.
Ultravox! Human League (first two albums), Japan (first two albums), Devo, and Gary up to 81 were amazing days.

And I was SO reviving all of that by '86!
Billy Currie playing with Gary Numan ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fantastic interview with the absolute legend Gary Numan... So typical of him to big up these other artists and be still in awe of them.. 👍
Very interesting slice of musical history given from a personal perspective and from a very humble man. Thankyou for sharing
Great interview.... Big fan in the day, grateful to have been a teenager in those days.
The john foxx iteration of ultravox is far superior imo

1st two japan albums were brilliant. others not so. sylvian hates them but they are so good.
I got the impression Foxx didn't want to be famous, which is why he wore the suits so he could disappear, he's still managed to make a lot of music.
Gary Numan wow!
I think Ultravox!'s look/presentation was fine, just a few years too early. They broke up just before the mainstream was ready for their music/look.
Ahead of their time, besr group ever

He's right about John Foxx being enigmatic. He has successfully kept his personal life private throughout his career. Does he have a family?
I preferred Ultravox with John Foxx. My Sex, Underpass, what great songs
@@steff5866 I don't mean to be pedantic but underpass was done after he left ultravox
I know john foxx sang underpass, but as a solo artist, not while part of ultravox
I strongly disagree with Gary about Ultravox with Midge I thought both versions were excellent
Ultravox is midge ure
Not really, Foxx was there first and 'Systems of Romance' effectively started the new wave genre
no. just no. the man that killed ultravox.
John Foxx decided to leave and Midge was asked to join
Ultravox is Midge Ure
John Foxx is Ultravox!
@@eyoung1683that's exactly what I think Ultravox! was for me the future similar to David Bowie
