I have Navara D22 2012 exactly same problem I have first start in the morning does that noise take 2 to 3 minutes but after that everything goes normal I find out that one of the diesel injectors it wasn't working well I took all off them and clean them that noise it's gone I don't have it anymore
If you have any problem with the timing or the chain or the tension you can tell the idling for the engine I'll be going up and down you can notice that form the RPM it's not settle well be 950 to 1200 up and down
once again peter here i have just had a new timing chain put in my 4x4 top an bottom pluse new belts as well trying to work out what the whisling is thanks again peter

Had the exact same problem. Sounds really bad. Its just your drive belts NOTHING serious. If you want test/check just poor a bit of water onto the belts. If it goes quiet... problem solve
Tensioner of the upper chain on the engine. This chains tend to die pretty fast they are small for the torque on this engine. Dont run the car on that state

I have a 2015 np300 Navarra when I starts on mornings I here a knocking sound coming from the engine when the engine heats up its stops, it's a really bad sound and smokes white in the morning at its first start.
Cool. I have replaced the AC & PS idler pulley bearings thinking it was those. Will be doing tbe Alt ones tomorrow. Was starting to think i had to go internal

had the similar noise on 2010 d22... turned out to be the belts.
same here so far. noise hasnt come back
What do use mean by the belts
Drive belts. Like alternator, power steering etc

you have to replace a tensioner on the upper chain ,is about 65euros
I did that and it made no difference in this case

nope, i replaced that and it was not the tensioner, it was the belt idler pulley bearings

quality bearings were $10 each, and about 1-2 hr labour, but i did it all myself
