  • In unimaginable circumstances, Kevin Harvick stepped into NASCAR Cup Series racing and the No. 29 race car in 2001. But the young 25-year-old racer climbed in gracefully and became a fearless racer. In just his third Cup race, Harvick won at Atlanta. It was a healing moment for our sport and a win that helped cement Harvick's legacy 4EVER. In Episode 2 of 4EVER Defining, we unpack how Harvick's legacy started with that win in Atlanta through the eyes of Richard Childress, Dale Jr., DeLana Harvick, Mike Dillon, Jeff Gordon and Mike Joy.

Kevin Harvick was a symbol of my childhood. February 2001 was right when I was old enough to remember things and sort of understand the world. The underdog scenario must have gotten me interested because my dad signed me up for his fan club. I remember the first time I ever had mail with my own name on it was Kevin Harvick fan club. I am grateful for everything I was fortunate enough to grow up watching. Without Kevin I really don't know if the history stuff on our channel would even be happening right now. If anyone else had gone in that car I don't think my interest would have grown the way it did during those formative years.

Well said! 👍 I was a 24 fan, but respected Big E and ultimately Harvick. I'll never forget standing next to Harvick after he did the truck race broadcast at Eldora and him graciously signing autographs. Good man.

Same here.. losing dale took my passion for the sport.. Kevin’s Atlanta win was a reminder that life continues on and things will be ok. I was never a diehard fan of any one driver again tho

Gonna suck not seeing Kevin on the track. His wins in the 29 early on in his career were monumental and helped a lot of grieving people.

I was a huge Dale Sr. Fan. When we lost him at Daytona I was devastated. I honestly thought my interest in NASCAR would fade away. That changed when Kevin won at Atlanta! To see the RCR crew so emotional was heart warming. Hell I even shedded a tear. From that moment on I was a Kevin Harvick fan. He brought the sport back for me. He was exciting and brash…it’s been a fun ride for the past 22 years watching Kevin grow and become a legend in the sport. I just want to thank him for keeping nascar special, for me. I. Going to miss him. The sport has changed but I’ll look forward to his commentary next year during the races.

Yeah, me too. TIme and again. It was good to see Richard Childress take part in this tribute. To have that respect after parting ways so long ago is definitely a testament to Kevin as a person. Childress didn't just recount those moments. He made it clear that he knew Kevin had what it took before Kevin proved it to everyone else.

Harvick is the only active driver on the grid that started the 2001 Rockingham race. Steve park won that day, but once he's retired that will end the last link to that 2001 season on track

When I was growing up, Dale Earnhardt was King to my Dad. On that day in February I remember watching the 500 with my Dad and seeing the heartbreak and sadness in him watching the press conferences about Dale. But a few weeks later we were watching the race at Atlanta and seeing the 29 car in victory lane allowed healing to begin with him over the loss of his idol. Because of that day, Kevin Harvick became my favorite driver. Kevin and the 29 car was a major part of my childhood and had created many memories that I wouldn’t give up till this days. All I would like to say is, Thank you Kevin Harvick. Thankyou from the memeries and thank you for never backing down. #4ever

I watched that race in 2001 and i just remember the raw emotions, i was just a teenager and just learning about nascar but that moment and Jrs win at daytona were just those moments that you didnt know what to say and you couldnt help but shed a tear of joy of excitement, i just remember the crowd was just electric. Fast forward to last weekend phoenix when harvick took the lead from larson i was at the race and the crowd went wild when he took the lead. What a career for harvick, never really was a complete harvick but hes matured and become a very humble down to earth guy that is just very likable
