What a video, congrats on finding Gear Works on both platforms. I have to agree though, its hard trying to find cases and manuals out in the public for the games we need. I'm still looking for cases and manuals for Left 4 Dead 2 and Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage on the Xbox 360, and I've been looking for 2 years at this point. If I find a loose game at a good price. Depending on the game I’m might turn to Etsy and be fine with a replacement. Recently. I got Pokémon colosseum well under market but it was loose. Finding an OG box and manual was like 80 bucks. I said screw that and went to Etsy. Replacement box and manual for like 25 bucks. They are super HQ and most probably wouldn’t even tell the difference.
To answer your question from early on the video: yes, that red toy you were looking at is indeed from Beastwars. The character is Megatron from season 3, who got upgraded into that form when he absorbed the original Decepticon's Megatron's (his ancestor) spark into his own body so he could get the same upgrade Optimus Primal got from Optimus Prime's spark. As for game hunting: yeah, on the one side it is sad that video gaming stores strictly dedicated to games is going the way of the dinosaur, but on the other hand, I'm not so sure I'm entirely too sad about it. As long as stores do continue to sell physical games, I'm not against them expanding to toys and other retro stuff at all because I love walking around stores and looking around at their toy displays and such. It takes me back to when I was a kid and going to stores just for the toys.
I never understood why game stores hold on to 8 empty cases with manuals of the same game. Like how often do you get those in loose? If it’s a platformer, I could understand. But why not sell off your excess instead of having a big wall? I got game that need cases and manuals. And you honestly can’t always find them on eBay. That is a big pet peeve I have with game stores too. If you hold on to it forever, maybe just give it up so someone can complete theirs.
14:17 You overlooked that Docomodake DS game in the back here. Maybe you have it already. If not, it's a decent puzzle platformer akin to Mario vs DK or Lemmings. It does have a slipcover if you want it super-complete. As you stated 14:25, it can be difficult to find the various pieces which come with games. Be vigilant and always ask game stores or sellers if they have loose cases, inserts, posters, or ephemera they would be willing to let you peruse. DS is still in that age where people don't recognize the value of these things, especially the game-specific Nintendo club inserts which schill the Nintendo Power subscription.
6:01 Crystal Pony for Sega Genesis allows you to create your own pony. It's not the most fantastic action puzzle game, but I can't recall console games allowing you to customize your character outside RPGs.
While i dislike they have to branch out in order to get by, I kind of like seeing retro and new toys and snacks that i grab while shppping for games as an extra added treat...unless itd 12 bucks for a 2 dollsr generic energy drink
The best part of the 1st store, the 80's Caprice out front, I miss 80's GM cars. Robotech Battlecry had 3 variations. Hah, I hit up pretty much all these stores about a week ago on the same route. Not a big fan of the new Retro Exchange location. Seems they are still setting up and very sparse for the massive amount of space they gained. Hopefully it fills up a little better going forward. The Gaming Zone's newest location is pretty beautiful and has some great stuff but I've always had an issue with their pricing, just too high on most things for me, personally. Omg the resident evil action figures are so awesome. I have the zombie with the lab coat and the zombie dog still from my childhood. But I think Im missing part of the zombie dog 😢
The retro exchange took over an old arcade section of the comic book store the place has 3 stores in 1 it's nuts I could have spent my whole day there and all my money lol
13:19 i would sell my soul for that one. and that's 1 of the problems i have availability. i'm a collector of certain series. and finding some games in the series is insanely hard living in Europe. i remember it took me 9 years from seeing the original Let's play to find Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube cause it was never released in The Netherlands.
So I am a little confused by narrative of struggling video game stores that HAVE to expand to other stuff. You live in or around Phoenix which has retro gaming stores in any direction you can spit. Fallout has 4 stores, Gaming Zone has 3 stores, 1Up, Rampage Games, Game Smash, etc, Then you have the bigger everything stores like House of Used, all the Bookmans, all the Zias, Half Price Books, the Antique Malls that undoubtedly have at least 1 video game booth, the Swap Meets and Flea Markets, Collector's Marketplace, TriForce, Retro Exchange, Video Games & More, not to mention Gamestops everywhere. The Valley has an incredible gaming economy and everyone's doing pretty well. Just because stores expand their inventory to include related items and some easy money makers doesn't mean games aren't cutting it. It's just a weird faulty narrative to push that I don't really understand.

@ Oh shoot I never responded to this but yea that is something ADV actually did a couple times. Literally had a counter in the corner of the screen to tell u when a characters chest moved HAHA
I can understand asking $500 for that Turbo Graphics 16 because of like you said the scarcity, But me personally would rather save $200 by buying it online, because then I can take that extra money and buy games. Unfortunately most people will probably think this way also because now everyone price checks everything before they buy it
A lot of gamers will say the most expensive version of the same game on multiple consoles is the best but I like variety and I don't always get the PS2 version, I would get the Xbox version. I like to do 50/50
That generation is difficult. The most you will find is that one version looks cleaner. I prefer flavors like NES vs Sega Genesis. The tech varied so much that you get more of a different game experience between the two. You can also find this in the same generation like SNES and Sega Genesis, but it will vary. Sometimes ports are the same. There are also ports which offer extras or changes to gameplay and level design.
#1. can't find common games. #2 dose not know what console to buy games for. #3 video game stores sell other stuff gamers love. #4 in a hobby all about hunting down things to add to our collections, is there need to repeat #1?? "i hate when things become rare and the value of my collection grows?!?" #5 complete games..................... ok this one is a real complaint. only thing worse is checking the case, seeing it's complete. buying it, taking it home to play and seeing a greatest hits copy in your black label case. #1 and #4 are the same complaint yet #5 is a direct contradiction.
Man I'm so over retro hunting. Just seems like more and more scummy business practices. I walked in to a retro store the other day with some extra stuff I was looking to get rid of, they gave me the value for everything, and as I noticed they had Punisher on Sega I figured id just put the credit towards that and they proceeded to tell me that nothing with a red sticker can be purchased with in store credit. Took all my stuff back just ended up dropping it off at a goodwill.
They might as well have told you that they don't take certain games and titles due to their ubiquity and "unsellability." They probably don't want 1000 Madden 07s and you walk away with Punisher. The red sticker thing is basically them telling you their store credit is worthless.
@@WhatsOnMyShelf thats what was so disappointing about it. It wasn't like I brought them a 18 copies of shadow of the Colossus lol, some of them were good games. I know there was a loose Pokemon leaf green in there, they gave me something like 220 in store credit, but I guess they wanted ME to buy 1000 copies of Madden 07 cuz pretty much anything over $50 had a red sticker on it.
800 for a loose gba game!? Are you sure the price isn't the problem? It always seems cool to get into collecting, but then you see games that used to be common and cheap now super expensive. A niche hobby gets even more niche
I'm not sure if using one of the few, very rare and expensive, GameBoy games is a good example of the entire retro collecting scene, but I understand the sentiment 🙂
Video games are probably not cutting it anymore because they aren't places that casual gamers want to go and shop at. They are geared more towards collectors than the casual gamers and their prices usually reflect that. Stores rather sell things at top dollar and sit on inventory than to price things competitively and move more because of the idea of "someone out there would be willing to buy it." They rather have 1 hot item pay for their overhead to maximize profit as much as possible. It's really hard for me to justify spending my dollar in my local economy where I live in reseller city where there's a bunch of retro video game stores and they all usually have prices above ebay prices. Unlike ebay, there is no buyer protection with the stores in my city. If i buy a game, i expect it to work and if I buy a game at a higher price, I expect it to be in an original case. (like switch games being sold in psp cases but still being sold as "new" or "used" instead of loose is crazy to me). When the prices on ebay are cheaper and I have buyer protection, it kinda makes going to vidoe game stores kinda pointless to me. My dollar is my voice and I don't want to use my voice to say "this market is good. I am willing to pay these high prices at more of a risk and keep pricing out children and casual gamers." The monopoly of high dollar games for some collector to need it to complete their collection or to flex that they own this mid tier low printed copy of a game is also an issue i have with the community. A lot of collectors admit they won't play a majority of the games they buy. People can spend their money however they want and I can feel however I want about it but at the end of the day, it's becoming less and less accessible for people to play even common low value games

#5 complete games..................... ok this one is a real complaint. only thing worse is checking the case, seeing it's complete. buying it, taking it home to play and seeing a greatest hits copy in your black label case.
#1 and #4 are the same complaint yet #5 is a direct contradiction.
The problem is everyone knows what everything's worth.
You can't find any deals anymore.

When are you guys heading to Japan?
Hopefully later this year 🤞🏻
Love me some emulators less money
800 for a loose gba game!? Are you sure the price isn't the problem? It always seems cool to get into collecting, but then you see games that used to be common and cheap now super expensive. A niche hobby gets even more niche
I'm not sure if using one of the few, very rare and expensive, GameBoy games is a good example of the entire retro collecting scene, but I understand the sentiment 🙂
If you are out retro game hunting, have you tried…not being out retro game hunting?
I mean, whenever we aren't out retro game hunting that's the case 🤔
@ Good call.
if u need to hunt over a year for a common game it is not common.
That’s super ironic that you saw the gear works on the game gear
Totally!
