Stepover apple and pear training is very popular in Europe as a way of creating a border along paths or even at the edge of potager beds and less formal vegetable gardens. I love them so much and we can buy the rootstock already grafted onto dwarf varieties. This apple arbor is such a great idea for this part of your garden.
I sure hope you take those big, arching roses and let them grow in the dirt lands. They are stunning, big-impact plants and well worth keeping in my opinion.

Good morning, ladies. I started watching when I was contemplating if I should do yard work,lol. 7 yrs later, this channel is part of my morning routine and has made a big impact on how I feel about gardening.
Laura… have you ever considered a gourd arch around/near the kids play area? I think the kids (and adults) would be fascinated by the different styles (apple, bird house, bottle, dipper, etc) and they would be awesome to dry for crafting / decorating projects. Look up the idea online - so many neat examples!
I grew the bottle gourds I think was the name of it over a cattle panel and it was so lush and magical looking walking underneath it and seeing all the gourds hanging down! Also it makes it much easier to cut them off. I think that the kids would absolutely love it And afterwards they can paint them and hang them around the property. ( you make birdhouses out of them) You only need to plant a couple seeds and help train the branches up over to start and then they pretty much do the rest on their own! Just let them dry completely until you can hear the seeds inside when you shake them. I hope Laura see’s this comment and plant’s some! Please heart ❤️ it if you see this comment! Thank you Laura! 🫶
Rose flowers are very striking and each plant needs to stand out on its own. I knew your layout wouldn’t last because it doesn’t lend to allowing each plant to glow. My mom was a house manager for a mansion in Beverly Hills that took up a whole block. It had the most beautiful formal rose garden. Full of lightly raised beds with stone walkways that curved all around the beds. 90% of the plants were roses and the rest filled in when the roses weren’t in bloom.
All I can say is, you are by far by favorite TH-camr for gardening. I could watch your videos all day, very informative, very relaxing. It's like a visit with an old friend.
Oh a big yes to the roses as climbers in the dirt lands…..just let em bloom bloom bloom and form those gorgeous rose hips for fall flower arrangements🎉
Christianson’s is in Mount Vernon, WA! I go there often ☺️ I pass it every Sunday on the way to church and often stop at their farmer’s market on the way home. It’s such a treat to have such an amazing nursery near me. They have so many amazing events, they stock amazing plants all year, and they have a lovely little antiques shop as well.
You know, this makes me think a community post would be cool where everyone could share their favorite garden shop or garden-related spot to visit, maybe start every comment with the state name so it’d be easy to scan. I’ve got two amazing places I visit for fun even if I don’t need any plants at the moment! 😂 I’ve yet to find a dependable, updated list anywhere online, so I end up spending SO much time searching before visiting a new area. Hmmm… anyone here want to start a website?? 😉
A great tip I learned from a gardener is to use pencil to write on your garden tags because it will weather very well. I dubiously followed the advice and it didn’t disappoint! I live in Southern Alberta and I’ve found tags from previous years in the garden where you can still read the writing in pencil!

I think with varieties like Mme Anisette, you may achieve some pretty spectacular results! Yes I agree! So many of us don't have enough garden space to peg roses, but they look so wild and wonderful tended to in this way in large gardens. Pegging of roses is underused for big bushy and small climber types.
Have you considered planting a large single row of roses along one of your white fences? It would be such an elegant welcome to your home. Love the channel and watch all your content.

You said that each quadrant of the cut flower gardens will have an entrance on each side. I would take some of those "climbing/partial climbing" roses and put them on an arbor as an entrance somewhere there. They are gorgeous. So many pretty roses. Love that apple arbor!

Plant comfrey at the base of your apple trees. In the winter time it can die back and feed your apple trees. You can plant them along the base of all your fruit trees.
You should ask your neighbors who have been dusted this summer by your changes if they want some roses! Do you think Bethany would ever show her yard space with all the plants she has taken from you? Would love to see how she gardens..please Behany💚
I was privileged to visit Bunny Mellon’s estate in Upperville , Virginia and Parterre garden was bordered by small 2 foot high espalier apple trees and also a very long espalier apple tunnel . The most amazing garden . 3:25

That’s been the name of the game for me this season! I pulled out some mature foundation plantings and started over earlier in the spring. Now I’ve painted lines to change the shapes of my other beds. Gives me something to look forward to in my own garden!
I removed my pool last month so I have my pool garden that has to be removed! I’m at a loss so going to think and plan on it all winter then tackle it in spring with new eyes!

Great video as always! You could try "pegging" those larger roses if you find a spot in the landscape suitable for a large shrub. Basically you would attach each of those long branches to stakes in the ground, creating a series of arches all around the plant. The rose then sends out blooms all along the lateral areas of the arch. It makes for a great show at bloom time!
You’ve got to appreciate the Laura will just change out something that is just not working for them, even if it’s entire rose garden - while most of us stress over taking out one little plant! I think we can all learn from that.
I vote the dirt lands for the large roses. They would look lovely out there to just let them do their thing! Golden Celebration is my absolute favorite David Austin. Looks beautiful and an amazing aroma.
The Mackintosh apple is one of the rare Canadian varieties. They originate in Ontario and were named for the farmer who discovered them growing wild in an abandoned orchard. They are supposed to be the mother variety for Spartans and Granny Smith varieties. 😊 🇨🇦

I agree, even though rose is possibly my favorite flower, i don't really love rose gadens either. It's almost like too much of a good thing. I like roses much better dispersed among other plants. Happy for you for getting to try something new that excites you in the space!! ♡
I LOVE the Apple arbor! Such a great compliment to the area. I agree with you in that I don’t care for large rose garden areas. I think they almost look like something that you would see at a garden center for people to choose and purchase. However, I do love 2 or 3 planted close by each other in various areas of the property with structures if that makes sense. Looking forward to seeing the new plan for this area come together.
I loved the way you dug the apple tree holes without moving and marking the arch. Some of the tall roses might grow well on the flower barn - (the white building near the orchard). Thanks for the ideas.
A friend of mine’s ancestor was close to a curator of Kew and was often handed interesting reject trees and shrubs for his own gardens which are stunning. Similarities muchly. 😃

Never really enjoyed formal rose gardens either. Just kind of meh 11 months of the year. I went to Longwood Gardens this summer after a long time and noticed that they changed their formal rose garden into a mixed garden with lots of perennials and annuals mixed in with the roses. So beautiful and had me wandering the path, even though the roses weren't in bloom.
Yes, Christiansons does still have their low apple trees around the Schoolhouse building! They are 45 minutes south of me in Mt Vernon WA. In fact I bought the same or similar arch like this one there for roses! My favorite place on earth to shop and a must visit if in the PNW corner of Washington state.
The apple arch is fantastic! Can't wait to see it grow and fill out. Will you keep the limbs lined up with the edges of the arch? I have to say I love the rose garden. I can see where it would not be very showy most of the year; however, what a glorious bloom for a short time. The rose you are saving for Bethany is so pretty. We are in the middle of a monsoon it seems, rainy and dark, for a couple of weeks. The plants love it! As do the ducks. I think I'm growing webs between my toes!
Hi Laura, the roses that you’re not sure about put them in an area where they just grow naturally like the area you picked your rose hips. That would make a nice thick fragrant wall of beauty.
Maybe move the rambling roses to the top of the slope behind where the high tunnels are going? It will help keep people away from the slope while adding nice wild area for the roses to go wild in the background.
I just got my first Golden Celebration & decided to put it in a planter & put in the garage over the winter… didn’t realize it might get so big & possibly like to climb. Wanted it mainly because it can take partial shade.

11:58, the no root zone is where the container had been facing the SUN and the HEAT has cooked the roots in that area, I find it's a good starting point to begin tickling the roots apart on all rootbound container plants.
I thought you would not love having a rose garden. I have a formal rose garden in the middle of a circular driveway and keeping those tidy and blooming means deadheading minimally once a week, plus regular iron and fertilizing. Mine also go dormant in heat of summer. To manage that many roses you have to REALLY LOVE roses. I'm in the Willamette Valley, but the last two summers have been unusually hot and my roses have really suffered! Glad to see you reimagine the cut flower garden. I change my gardens all the time! It is great to watch you change it up.
So excited that you love some of the same roses, I do. Ashley is on top of my list! FYI, some of the plants that look lanky are actually climbers, such as Quicksilver. So, they could use some support.

Those 1ft trees your saw is a known form of training apple trees know as ‘stepover training’ 😊
The technique for making a fence from a fruit tree is a called a Belgian fence…my sister’s neighbor in NY was from Europe and had done it in her yard.

An arbor tunnel with roses attacks all who walk through! Look at raised- bed garden Collette rose, needs constant pruning.

I’ve seen apple trees used as a wall in a formal garden. That was so cool to see.
Plant comfrey at the base of your apple trees. In the winter time it can die back and feed your apple trees. You can plant them along the base of all your fruit trees.
Still don’t “get” the love affair with boxwoods! Lol. I’m sure, however, you have a plan and it will look beautiful. 👍🏼
I think she is heavily inspired by English gardens which rely a lot on boxwoods.
A HUGE fan of Boxwoods here! On my very small lot I have 5 Wintergreen, 10 Winter Gems, and two upright Dee Runks. They're Blue! Wonderful!

I was privileged to visit Bunny Mellon’s estate in Upperville , Virginia and Parterre garden was bordered by small 2 foot high espalier apple trees and also a very long espalier apple tunnel .

That’s been the name of the game for me this season! I pulled out some mature foundation plantings and started over earlier in the spring. Now I’ve painted lines to change the shapes of my other beds. Gives me something to look forward to in my own garden!
I removed my pool last month so I have my pool garden that has to be removed! I’m at a loss so going to think and plan on it all winter then tackle it in spring with new eyes!

You could try "pegging" those larger roses if you find a spot in the landscape suitable for a large shrub. Basically you would attach each of those long branches to stakes in the ground, creating a series of arches all around the plant. The rose then sends out blooms all along the lateral areas of the arch. It makes for a great show at bloom time!
What happened to the espalier pear tree??
They moved it to opposite the blueberry tubs. On the side wall where they store the garden soil and tools. 😊
You’ve got to appreciate the Laura will just change out something that is just not working for them, even if it’s entire rose garden - while most of us stress over taking out one little plant! I think we can all learn from that.

I vote the dirt lands for the large roses. They would look lovely out there to just let them do their thing! Golden Celebration is my absolute favorite David Austin. Looks beautiful and an amazing aroma.
The Mackintosh apple is one of the rare Canadian varieties. They originate in Ontario and were named for the farmer who discovered them growing wild in an abandoned orchard. They are supposed to be the mother variety for Spartans and Granny Smith varieties. 😊 🇨🇦

I agree, even though rose is possibly my favorite flower, i don't really love rose gadens either. It's almost like too much of a good thing. I like roses much better dispersed among other plants. Happy for you for getting to try something new that excites you in the space!! ♡

I LOVE the Apple arbor! Such a great compliment to the area. I agree with you in that I don’t care for large rose garden areas. I think they almost look like something that you would see at a garden center for people to choose and purchase. However, I do love 2 or 3 planted close by each other in various areas of the property with structures if that makes sense. Looking forward to seeing the new plan for this area come together.

I loved the way you dug the apple tree holes without moving and marking the arch. Some of the tall roses might grow well on the flower barn - (the white building near the orchard). Thanks for the ideas.
A friend of mine’s ancestor was close to a curator of Kew and was often handed interesting reject trees and shrubs for his own gardens which are stunning. Similarities muchly. 😃

Never really enjoyed formal rose gardens either. Just kind of meh 11 months of the year. I went to Longwood Gardens this summer after a long time and noticed that they changed their formal rose garden into a mixed garden with lots of perennials and annuals mixed in with the roses. So beautiful and had me wandering the path, even though the roses weren't in bloom.
Laura never had a rose GARDEN. Just rows of rose plants. I'm glad she will move her favorites into the landscape with other plants where they belong.
Yes, Christiansons does still have their low apple trees around the Schoolhouse building! They are 45 minutes south of me in Mt Vernon WA. In fact I bought the same or similar arch like this one there for roses! My favorite place on earth to shop and a must visit if in the PNW corner of Washington state.
The apple arch is fantastic! Can't wait to see it grow and fill out. Will you keep the limbs lined up with the edges of the arch? I have to say I love the rose garden. I can see where it would not be very showy most of the year; however, what a glorious bloom for a short time. The rose you are saving for Bethany is so pretty. We are in the middle of a monsoon it seems, rainy and dark, for a couple of weeks. The plants love it! As do the ducks. I think I'm growing webs between my toes!
Hi Laura, the roses that you’re not sure about put them in an area where they just grow naturally like the area you picked your rose hips. That would make a nice thick fragrant wall of beauty.
Maybe move the rambling roses to the top of the slope behind where the high tunnels are going? It will help keep people away from the slope while adding nice wild area for the roses to go wild in the background.

I just got my first Golden Celebration & decided to put it in a planter & put in the garage over the winter… didn’t realize it might get so big & possibly like to climb. Wanted it mainly because it can take partial shade.

11:58, the no root zone is where the container had been facing the SUN and the HEAT has cooked the roots in that area, I find it's a good starting point to begin tickling the roots apart on all rootbound container plants.
I thought you would not love having a rose garden. I have a formal rose garden in the middle of a circular driveway and keeping those tidy and blooming means deadheading minimally once a week, plus regular iron and fertilizing. Mine also go dormant in heat of summer. To manage that many roses you have to REALLY LOVE roses. I'm in the Willamette Valley, but the last two summers have been unusually hot and my roses have really suffered! Glad to see you reimagine the cut flower garden. I change my gardens all the time! It is great to watch you change it up.

FYI, some of the plants that look lanky are actually climbers, such as Quicksilver. So, they could use some support.
