I've never tried learning sweep picking in my 35+ years of playing the guitar. This makes me at least want to try, very inspirational and very clear instructions. Preliminary thanks!
I'm getting close 30 years of playing myself and I've only started practicing it a couple of times, but gave up. Maybe someday I'll pick it up (pun intended) again :)
When i was in university i trained sweeping for 1 year straight. I made nearly the same motion for this time every day. And suddenly it happend and now its effortless as other techniques. Just takes time. Dont stop practicing!
I didn't expect you upload a sweep picking tutorial! You and Bernth are extremely helpful with guitar technique. I can add this lesson into my practice sessions now. Thank you very much!
Really appreciate the breakdown of your pick holding and placement of your picking hand on the bridge. As an intermediate beginner guitarist, I've struggled to understand these two techniques because everyone seems to do it differently, but rarely do they explain why.
The one clip to destroy careers of all real life and online guitar teachers, as it is in a class of its own! I wish this existed 25 years ago when I was trying to learn to sweep pick and ended up brooming instead. This video would save me at least 6.66 years of struggle and suckage! The attention to the most minute details, each innuendo of sweep picking is covered and explained. Best video on this technique I have seen to date and I've seen at least 669 of them...Killer job sire!
I took lessons when I was a kid off an old bluegrass guy that was hellbent on forcing me to play Gordon Lightfoot and shit. I struggled to learn anything because I hated it. Then one day I taught myself the solo from the Duncan Hills coffee jingle from Metalocalypse, because I actually liked it. He made fun of me because I had struggled for months with sheet music, but taught myself sweep picking in a week. I'm very excited to start trying to do sweep arpeggios and learn the guitar I actually wanted to learn.
After a few minutes I have the downward sweep going decently and I’m so excited, holy shit. Been playing 20 years and never tried to learn this cause it seems so daunting, can’t wait to get this nailed down.
Mr. Beanley ...I am officially impressed by your teaching methods... I have been teaching a lot of skilled guitarists on how to work on their deep dirty vibratos... A lot of them have the Kirk Hammet syndrom..... Be Wylde I told them!...Own your neck!... NOW personnaly for myself the right way of sweeping to make some solos interesting and flashy wasn't statisfying until I bumped on your channel! Monsieur je vous remercie! From Montreal, Quebec, Canada. ps. A good friend Frank Marino from my home town discussed music with me on composing and solos and we both agreed...how to play is one thing...how to teach is another! Thank you Mr. Beanley
I have been trying to learn this - mainly from the exercises in the Guitar aerobics book, but just not getting it, sounding terrible, with no timing. This has really helped. You are the ace mate!
Another thing that helps is practicing the sweep in increments. Just start with the first 3 notes until you get a good sweep, then keep adding another note until you can do them all smoothly 👍 (Gonna be honest, I didn't watch the whole video. Apologies if he already mentioned this)
My 16 yo metal ass who started playing 3 years ago wanted to start sweep picking for a while but I couldn’t get the motivation with all those videos, but thanks to you I can finally start learning cuz I know you’re the right guy
Thank you Bradley for these great explanations which will surely be very beneficial for me. And thank you for your passion for teaching, in your videos on this channel. You are one of the best TH-camrs! 🎸🎸
This is a great intro for people trying to learn. Its all muscle memory and time. To drive that home, I always tell students or other interested parties that if you have to think about what you’re doing, you’re not going to sound good.
Nice video. This has to be one of the best explanations Ive seen, makes me want to finally start trying to learn it. Most other sweep tutorials bombard you with waaay too much information and seem to skip past the basics, either that or theyre so dull that its hard to pay attention.
Oh bloody hell mate! That was so mind opening. Thank you so much for all these 'dull teacher's' explanations. Thanks to you I finally got the theory and there's nothing more left but practice! Hell yeah!
I think one of the harder things to sweep are arpeggios with lower and higher strings that should only be picked once during each cycle. I know many would try to move the fretting around to avoid this scenario, but still there are places where I prefer to flow into that type of shape and it's very difficult to play accurately. For example, CPE Bach's Solfeggietto on guitar may feature this run: G: 15 D: 17 G: 15 B: 15 e: 15 B: 15 G: 15 D: 17 e: 15 B: 15 G:16 D:17 G:16 B: 15 e: 15 Do you have an approach for such sweeps?
Don't make the mistake of thinking BeB and GDG are equally difficult just because they are both sweeped examples. If it's easier for you to escape the plane of the strings on an upstroke then GDG will feel much easier regardless of whether you play it up-down-down or up-up-down, I personally prefer up-down-down. In that case BeB will feel a bit awkward because you'll have to escape the plane of the strings after a downstroke regardless of whether you play down-up-up or down-down-up. I would personally use the 1st variation but in all honesty I would rather just avoid the BeB case all together. I assume the opposite would be true for someone who finds it easier to escape the plane of the strings after a downstroke.
@@Wenasd Either way feels rather problematic as it requires to perform a string skip in the middle of the sweep. Perhaps indeed doing a skip at the last note in the sweep direction and then continuing with a uniform sweep on the way back should feel a bit less abrupt, but it's still problematic.
@@TLguitar Well, it's not so much the string skipping (or string change rather) that makes it difficult but rather the change in direction. Think about the typical cyclic arpeggio you can play on the bottom 3 strings (eeBGBeeeBGBeee... up-pulloff-up-down-down-down...). This can be played at lightning fast speeds even though the G string is only played once because you mantain the same pick angle throughout the entire lick. As soon as you introduce an extra string (eeBGDGBe...) you put yourself in an awkward position by having to sweep up from the B to the G, which forces you to change pick angle when going grom the G to the D. In the the end that fingering is not ideal, but it can work alright up to decent speeds. I don't think you can achieve the same speed as you would with 2 or 3 notes on the string where you change direction.
I think you should do more of these kid of lessons it is really good and fun which is important if you wanna learn stuff and I believe this will get you the attention you deserve
Came to this video a few months ago and I was so frustrated with the lack of progress I was making with the excercise give, so I stopped and decieded not to learn sweeping. It took a few months for me to encounter many songs that use it and I mustered the curage to try again. Today I meanged to do it. Patience is key and I suggest to all the gutarist out there who are practicing and learning: if it is not going leave it for a konth or two, then try again. Eventually you can master anything. Just be patient adn dong give up completely.😊😊
Wow, has this channel evolved from skill-full meme content, to masterful step by step guides. I am here for it Mr. Beans. Thank you for this. And if your school is anything like these types of tutorials, man, take my monies.
Im not sure why I watch these cause I dont play guitar and have no real interest in playing guitar. I think I just like to watch ya play cause it fascinates me! Awesome job!
Having a song to practice the boring bits really helps - I never even considered trying to learn sweep picking until I had a sudden urge to play Love Walked In by Thunder and it turns out the intro is perfect beginner-level right hand sweeping practice. Getting a consistent sweep speed on that intro is a great way to practice that... ...then you just go learn Tornado of Souls and the left hand sorts itself out, ya know, after a bit more practice 😄
Very nice and fluid! I clearly have a very, very long way to go but I've learned enough here to know that I'm on the right path and just need to practice my arse and hand sync off. Thanks!

That's it. I've played guitar for 17 years, love heavy music, but never attempted to learn a solo that had sweeping in it. Was always too intimidated to learn. That ends now, I'm going to learn to sweep pick. Will update progress after the weekend.
@elricc7535 slow. I have limited time to practice it due to grad school, gf, and other life obligations but I'm improving! Still working on synchronizing the hands as it seems like that's the fundamental that needs to be perfect before progressing.
Thank you, sir Hallsworth I've wanted to be able to sweep ever since I found your main channel. I've gotten pretty good at 3 string sweeps but I'm rather hopeless after that. This video explained it so simply that an idiot could understand it, and I kinda needed that...
This video was exactly what I needed. Been wanting to learn for some time but didn't really know where to start. I managed to get this pattern sounding really nice and fast within a couple of hours. What arpeggio/pattern do I try next though?
12:27 Actually I’ll disagree with you. Mindless practice is really good ONLY IF you know EXACTLY what bad habits to look out for and to avoid. If you don’t, you’ll speed plateau, making no progress, and that’s where hardcore analysis comes to save the day. @12:50 I can relate to that haha. My dad and brother would focus on learning songs and I would focus on learning technics to be able to play my favorite songs. Of course, learning a technic sounds way more annoying to everyone else but you
This was v helpful (used to look up vids like this years ago and they hardly helped so I learned my own way lol... Need to relearn from my mistakes). Just wish you showed how your fingers sit on the frets cos they're flatter surely to mute the others?
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank YOU!!! Thanks so much for this, it feels like I'll finally be able to learn how to sweep pick!!!
I saw where you mentioned Brendan smalls on your top 250 guitarist list awesome choice! Did you ever see Swisgars masterclass on sweep picking it was an extra on one of the death clock dvd's... Very informative and accurate animation showing exactly how to "sweeps" picking for beginners. It is awesome! He says just sweeps your pick around😅
20yrs guitar for me, in the "kind of messy in the middle" sweeping guy, trying to nail the sweep from altitudes for so many years.. i'll try hard your exercise, at slow i nailed it in 20minutes, let's go
this has helped me so much. thank you and i was wondering who are some of your all time favourite guitarists mine are steve clark of def leppard and nancy wilson of heart
Awesome explanation and possibly one of the first times I've seen someone mention learning each hand separately, but definitely makes sense. I can't currently play with my picking arm due to shoulder issues, but could practice there fretting hand. Once my shoulder issue is resolved, I'll definitely check out your patreon content. As a bonus I can practice using the same guitar as you so pretty much guaranteed success 😉🙃

I miss the old beginner tutorial video, I used to use the shapes and end portion as an exercise pretty consistently
Thanks Bradley. Awesome lesson
This is exactly what i was looking for, thanks!
Bradlington “Mr. Sweepy McSweepersons” Hallsworth.
Quite the fitting title if I do say so myself, me old chap!
Amazing video! Are you going to make a video about an alternative picking?
This was v helpful (used to look up vids like this years ago and they hardly helped so I learned my own way lol... Need to relearn from my mistakes). Just wish you showed how your fingers sit on the frets cos they're flatter surely to mute the others?
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank YOU!!!
Thanks so much for this, it feels like I'll finally be able to learn how to sweep pick!!!
Thanks for this! This cleared a lot up for me!
Cool lesson. In my teaching experience, the synchronisation issue is almost always caused by faults in the left hand technique.
I came for the guitar lesson. I stayed for the Twin Peaks tattoo.
20yrs guitar for me, in the "kind of messy in the middle" sweeping guy, trying to nail the sweep from altitudes for so many years.. i'll try hard your exercise, at slow i nailed it in 20minutes, let's go
this has helped me so much. thank you
and i was wondering who are some of your all time favourite guitarists mine are steve clark of def leppard and nancy wilson of heart
Man, nice lesson, you're a good teacher. I've only ever seen you wearing dustpans on your head before this 😄
Thank you very much for this very clear explanations 😊
Lost in the world of funds - a poetic reflection on the journey to reclaim them.
