Magnus Carlsen Checkmates Bill Gates in just 12 seconds

  • Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, billionaire and philantropist, faced off against the World Chess Champion - Magnus Carlsen during the talkshow “Skavlan” in 2014, recorded in a studio in London. Carlsen started with 30 seconds on his clock, and Gates with 2 minutes - by the time he’d win the game, Carlsen would only up 12 of those seconds!

For those who are wondering, the "12 seconds" refer to the total time it took Magnus to make all of his own moves according to the chess clock. Gate's moves are counted separately. That's why it's "12 seconds" despite the video being over a minute.

That's because he knows the opening lines, which typically end up locked into a few set ones after the first two moves. For example, in a King's Knight Opening Normal variation (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6), White basically has two options: 3.Bc4, the Italian Game, and 3.Bb5, the Ruy Lopez. After either of these openings, Black has only a single-digit number of viable options.

Gates was very lucky, but he's also very smart. The way he and Norman founded Microsoft can't be achieved by an average person. They were freshman in college back in the 70s, claimed to have a compiler (they didn't), set up a meeting to demonstrate the compiler and wrote the compiler in 3 weeks. It was purchased, then they dropped out of college to do a startup. A person with average intelligence in the 70s can't make that happen, no matter how hard they work.
