- A comparison video between the following jazz bass pickups on my modified Fender AVRI 75 jazz bass with on-board Bartolini XTCT preamp (Active mode).
Pickups:
1. Bartolini 9CBJD3-bright
2. Fender Pure vintage 74
3. Lollar 70’s Jazz Style
Strings: DR H-BEAMS 45-105
Zoom MS-60B (Compressor + booster)
Cubasis 3
Which pickup do you prefer? 🙂
After watching this video I'm sure of 2 things:
1. I wouldn't notice the difference if there was a band playing wih him. And...
2. You are a beast playing that bass!
Many thanks for watching and for your nice comment! 🙏🙏
Really, I like them all. The tonal differences are easy to hear but all 3 are very usable. I have original Barts in my J Bass. Excellent playing and thanks for doing this comparison.
Yes they are….it’s a matter of personal taste. Thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏👊
This definitely deserves more views than what it's gotten. Very well done!
Thanks a lot for watching and for your nice words! 🙏🙏
Nice bass playing! Thanks for this video to help my search for upgrading my ‘98 Am. Std. Been watching many videos and the Lollars are the winner so far for me. So many options.
Thanks for watching and commenting. The Lollars are close to the tone I like as well. I don’t if you’ve seen my other video where I demo’ed EMG J style on my Sire V5. That might also help you have a little clue about how EMGs sound.
I just ordered the Fender '74s and this vid makes me feel good about my choice... now if I could just rip like this guy... 😮!!!
VERY, VERY nicely done Sir.
Thanks a lot for your comment. I’m happy to hear that.
-Bartolini
finger 0:15
slap 0:58
-Fender
finger 1:54
slap 2:36
-Lollar
finger 3:32
slap 4:13
Well done! Thanks 🙏
Great demo ...!!!
Do more. 🙂
Really outstanding playing in this video!
Thanks a lot! 🙏
Since I play slap bass most often, the fender vintage 74 pickups is the clear winner. It’s that nice crisp sound so similar to my music man stingray.
I really like the Bartolinis
Well done - thanks
Thank you for watching and for your comment 🙏
Great playing and comparison!!!! I'm almost certain to replace the pickups in my 1st gen Sire V7 5 with the Bartolini 57CBJD pickups!
Thanks for watching 🙏. I have another comparison video on my channel where I compared Sire stock PUs with EMGs on my Sire V5. That might be interesting and relevant for you.
@@majidalizadeh9354 Yeah, I've seen that one! Very interesting!
Most excellent, Majid.
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏
LOVED your playing! My ears prefer the Lollars, followed by, surprisingly, the Fender pure vintage, and then the Bartolinnis. I've previously been a Bartolinni devotee, the Lollars just pop!
Thanks for your comment 🙏. All these pickups are great. I like both Lollars and Fenders. Both models represent 70´s tone well with some small differences.
I agree!!!! I'm seriously considering replacing the pickups in my 2016 Sire V7 5(and the preamp) but I'm hesitant.! I like the sound of my bass and have read reviews where people who replaced their Sire electronics regretted doing so!
Great video!! I enjoyed.. Nice Playing!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🇵🇷
Thanks a lot for watching and your nice comment 🙏
Very nice
Thanks for watching 🙏🙏
Bartolini sounds the cleanest. The other 2 got very dirty sounding at the higher notes above the 12th fret during the slapping. The other 2 pickups were really sensitive and seemed to pick up (no pun intended) a lot of artifact sounds. Some people may like that though.
Thanks for your comment. I can’t disagree with you about the clean sound of Bartolini.
@@majidalizadeh9354 Is this true? Can you demonstrate what @capraobscura claims on another upload to see if the tone can be rolled back on the other two pickups to achieve a clean sound comparable to the Barts?
@@robbyrob1180 it might be true. These two PUs have more output than Bartolini specially the fenders. So I should have rolled off the gain a bit. I have both Fenders and Lollars so that I can make another comparison between these two. I just need to find time to make it.
@@majidalizadeh9354 👍👍
I agree with the others, both Lollar and Fender sound great, with the Lollars being a little bit warmer and maybe richer. The Barts sounded pretty harsh, I didn't expect that. I like them in Laklands, but not at all in your bass.
I also agree…I personally prefer both the Fender and Lollar as well…..
Do you have this model (bright) in you Lakkand? Because I think for instance 9CBJD 1 is warmer than 9CBJD3.
@@majidalizadeh9354 I don't have a Lakland, just played one once and watched several demos on TH-cam. I play a Clover Apeiron with a Delano TheHybrid set. This comes with a very accurate vintage-style J single coil (JC 5 AL/H) which should be similar to the Lollars or the Fenders. But it adds a StingRay type sound with its special humbucker, similar to Lakland, but a lot closer to the original.
I think Lollar are most warm and full, wonderfull sound. Fender is great to, but just a bit less special.
Thanks for your comment. I can’t disagree 😊. But both Lollar and Fender satisfied me especially for my style.
👌👌👌🤩🤩
Mec pickups would sound the best. The custom work I'm doing this year will be quality over quantity
Mec pickups as in the insane jazz pickups in my active Warwick corvette bass i had to sell..., less than one year before my son decided to ask me to buy a bass for him? Those are the best things ever, so if so, please share info, because I'm looking at a very inexpensive Schecter Stiletto locally and if you're maybe throwing J style magnets in standard 3.5 Soapbar housing, he's about to get a tone upgrade!!
I am considering getting the sire V5 and putting the pure vintage 74 pickups in it, did you ever try this on yours?
I have a demo video on my channel where I played my Sire V5 with EMG J set pickups. Those are also great sounding pickups. I also did a comparison video between Sire stock PUs and EMGs. You might like them. But not fender pure vintage 74 on my V5. Maybe in the future 😊

Bartolinis for me
I prefer the Fender 74’s over the others because they have that crisp top end. Lollar’s a very close 2nd (they do POP in slap-playing).
Not all Fender products suck…
Thanks for your comment. I agree with you. Fender 74 PUs are surprisingly good.
I agree with that. The PV 63 P bass pickup is also awesome and half the price of the competition.
Thank you...
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching 😊
Lollar!!!!!
I think; no one is better, is just matter of preference. I think it would have been great if you used too the Ultra noiseless Fender.
Thanks for your comment. I agree with you and that’s what I have put in the description as a question i.e. which pickup do you “prefer”?
Thanks for the suggestion. I don’t have any experience with Ultra noiseless Fender PUs but that can be a good idea for another comparison video in the future.
First, I thought all three pickups sounded great. The last two seemed more distorted then the Bartolini’s. But like someone said in the comments, if you’re playing along with the band, you probably wouldn’t notice it. I do have the fender pure vintage 74s and I love them. Great bass playing. PEACE!
Thanks for watching and for your comment 🙏
Well done - to me: - Fender for brilliancy and classic tone, @ Lollar which is close to Fender but darker and 3 Bartolini which is too dark
Thanks for watching and commenting. These are 3 high end pickups with different characteristics.
Bartolini once again showing why they're THE go to brand for bassists that use J basses.
Which you chose?
Not fully decided yet. But either Fender or Lollar.
#80_🇺🇸
Lollar are the best !!!
They are for sure great pickups!
Didn’t expect John Oliver to be a killer bass player
😅😁😂👌🙏
The Lollars sounded best to me. I've never been a fan of Bartolini,.......mainly because I hate the way they label their jazz bass pickups.
It is easy to become very confused by all the Bartolin jazz pickups on the market.
I like lollar and fender, lollar marginally better
Thanks for your comment. Yes both are awesome PUs.
You are playing 5/4 with fills
Not sure I got what you mean!
Fender’s are better.
Thanks for your comment. Fenders are better than what I expected 👌👍
Am I the only one who can't make a conclusion because of the sound distortion?
Too much gain? I dont know. Nice try though
I’m not sure if there is a sound distortion in the recording. But I will keep an eye on that for my next videos. Thanks for your feedback anyway 😊
@@majidalizadeh9354 finally a man who doesn't misunderstand a well-intentioned review. it is very nice that you are a calm person. Personally, after a huge experience with pickups(I have tried bartolini, fralin, Lollar, nordstrand, delano, diMarzio, fender, G&L, MEC, seymour duncan) I have to say that there is no pickup that sounds as good in the mix as the bartolini.
@@powermosfetwell, that’s what we call “constructive feedback” at work and I don’t see any reason for being aggressive or even defensive when receiving such feedbacks. They will contribute to improvement if given and used properly. That sounds like a great experience with that broad range of PU’s. Undoubdetly Bartolinis are high quality PUs but the one that I demo’ed in this video is a bright type and it sounded too thin for my taste. And again thanks for watching the video and sharing your experience 😊
all sounds the same to me. total waist of money keeo it stock
Yes for those who don’t distinguish the difference it might be waiste of money but for some who are obsessive about tone and can hear the difference it is not 😊. Thanks for your comment anyway
Why don't you play a real bass?
A P!
What do you mean by a real bass?
