It's kind of funny how frequently people who work for city's and town's building and zoning departments drag their feet on doing their jobs... almost like it's a sweet government gig with not a lot of actual work.
There is probably a reason but the reason is likely bureaucratically difficult or they are leery of being responsible for someone getting hurt and suing. I love these guys and this project but them doing all the work with only the help of an engineer and maybe a few people behinds the scenes has made me mega nervous since that's what it seems like on the face of it. I still can't believe they haven't let you guys do the whole roof. Hopefully you guys can get the second half off soon so you can get to putting a new roof on.
Have been watching your video's for 2 years Jenna, when I was still sewing. I have started crochet and knitting inspired by you during the last year while my partner and I were renovating our house (also total gut, but smaller than you (though made out of brick))!! Just finished, feels amazing, we had so much fun and by the looks of it so will you :) (Also, crochet helped me stay sane during the renovation in terms of mental health, nice tip)
Hey guys great work!!! One tip from a female builder to another is if your pulling nails and you run out of leverage add a small chuck of 2x4 under the hammer head to give you more leverage 😊 good luck with the licensing
Better still, put the claw on the shaft of the nail, and tip the hammer to the side instead of in the direction of the curve. If they are a finish type of nail, just pull the head of the nail through the wood instead of trying to get a hold of the head and pulling it out.
I have just binged watched this whole series and I love it! No cleaning, washing or dog walking done. Did feed the dogs whilst I watched you in the kitchen. Just going out to walk them now and I know I’ll still be laughing at you swinging on the electric wire! ❤
Mmmm.. Kinda surprised you aren’t required to have separate bins for recyclable wood(even with the nails) and other construction waste. So thankful you are salvaging all the good old growth fir materials. 👍🍁🤙
The decisions someone made when building this house are mind boggling! Every episode pretty much I’m blown away by what you find 😂 Also, air test when the house is totally opened up to um, air?
Adding shims to a hole drilled too large is an acceptable fix. It should have been glued. Lag screws are no longer considered acceptable for this use case. Between seasonal changes in wood dimension, deterioration of the screw and wood over time allows them to loosen over time. Through bolts only.

7:00 All these little issues you've found with the construction and the ways they cut corners or didn't do things right-this house has still stood the test of time. Despite poor maintenance, it's still standing. If it were properly maintained, this house, with all its imperfections, would still be standing strong 50 years from now.

I love these guys and this project but them doing all the work with only the help of an engineer and maybe a few people behinds the scenes has made me mega nervous since that's what it seems like on the face of it. I'm also a public servant in a completely different sector and I can tell you we are very risk averse in even a very well managed environment.
You guys are so inspiring, the way you speak to each other and support each other is just gorgeous to watch. Think my husband and I would have had a gazillion arguments by now
I love how this is just a series of home Reno, but home demo, and then the cutest commentary between two Bestfriends who also happen to be lovers 😊
I have been watching from the beginning. I am shocked, and disappointed, with the struggles yall are facing getting approval to make this home better, not only for yourself but also for the neighboring homes and the community. I hope you get all the approvals you need promptly. Yall are doing a great job and I love watching every video!
LOL the sound of that beam tumbling down your hill reminded me of when Pippin knocked the bucket down the well in Moria and alerted the orcs. I did say aloud “Fool of a Took!" 😂
😁😁
You guys work so incredibly well as a team. I couldn’t imagine having this level of efficiency whilst building a dream home together- bless your patience ❤😂 Phenomenal progress in such a short span, despite the permit stress!
OMG. “In the wait list” with the sad music 😢. Killing me!
I cant get over the amount of work you 2 have done 🎉
I've got only 2 words for you... HARD HATS!!! (You wear a bike helmet when cycling. So wear a hard hat when doing demolition work.) 👷👷
watching her stand under the beams while he cut them made me so nervous!
@@Pollyjpocketwhile practicing golf swings and not paying attention.
@@Pollyjpocketyes! It’s actually starting to aggravate me. It would cost nothing compared to what they’ve spent on matching overalls and pink hammers and other accessories before getting basic safety equipment. I actually don’t know if I can keep watching…
Along with a dust mask, safety glasses and steel capped toes.
I tell them every week: HELMETS.
How you have not broke a window is a true miracle! If I was doing the stuff you've accomplished the first big chunk of wood I pushed down would have went right thru one of those $2000.00 windows. AMAZING!...AMAZING!
Coming from an owner of an auto glass company I think those windows are probably more like 20k ….theres no way you could get those huge thermopanes installed for 2k. I think they would need to be sourced from an industrial contractor…they probably should have nailed plywood over them during demo for some protection
These videos are the highlight of my week!
"We need to have an air-check."
*pans up to the open sky*
"I think we'll pass. Why wouldn't we pass?"😂😂
I hope you get your permits soon. It must be frustrating❤
Go Nicky Go Nicky Go Jenna Go Jenna 🎉🎉🎉 I love being on this journey with you!! Thank you for uploading ❤
you know you can use all that used 1 buy as fence plank all the 2x4 and 2x6 can be used as raised bed and planter boxes
JENNAAA I’ve been loving these renovation videos but have also been missing the thrifting, crochet and knitting, room makeovers etc videos!!! If you ever get time I’d really appreciate!! 💕
Watching Jenna at 20:33, I believe she's beyond the crocheting
@@barbfrank917excuse you

Nick is definitely a keeper. Not only cute very handy. The house is going to be gorgeous once done.
I still can't believe they haven't let you guys do the whole roof. Hopefully you guys can get the second half off soon so you can get to putting a new roof on.
I am on the edge of my seat about this demolition and the rebuild that's coming!!!!!❤❤ you guys are amazing!!
I look forward to each new posting. You 2 really get each other! Hoping for your new permit!!
Have been watching your video's for 2 years Jenna, when I was still sewing. I have started crochet and knitting inspired by you during the last year while my partner and I were renovating our house (also total gut, but smaller than you (though made out of brick))!! Just finished, feels amazing, we had so much fun and by the looks of it so will you :)
(Also, crochet helped me stay sane during the renovation in terms of mental health, nice tip)
I also remember my nail hammering days so well hahaha. GOod thing is: those days will pass!!
Ask the City to go over in detail exactly what is holding up the permit. Make an appointment have them sit with you and talk.
I have just binged watched this whole series and I love it! No cleaning, washing or dog walking done. Did feed the dogs whilst I watched you in the kitchen. Just going out to walk them now and I know I’ll still be laughing at you swinging on the electric wire! ❤
You guys are the best example of a relationship ♥️
I gotta say, I just love how every videos of the house just end on a random moment !
Nick learning the word yeet is genuinely so adorable
I love how much u both clearly respect each other💗💗
The fact that this house is still standing is kind of a miracle 😂
Mmmm.. Kinda surprised you aren’t required to have separate bins for recyclable wood(even with the nails) and other construction waste. So thankful you are salvaging all the good old growth fir materials. 👍🍁🤙
The decisions someone made when building this house are mind boggling! Every episode pretty much I’m blown away by what you find 😂
Also, air test when the house is totally opened up to um, air?
Found you for the crochet/knitting/sewing content, highly invested in the house renovation content 😂 ❤
Adding shims to a hole drilled too large is an acceptable fix. It should have been glued. Lag screws are no longer considered acceptable for this use case. Between seasonal changes in wood dimension, deterioration of the screw and wood over time allows them to loosen over time. Through bolts only.
And yet it lasted 70 years....just sayin'
@@rrmcbride555Last? It flew right out of the hole.
@@rrmcbride555it held together more or less from Thing around help thing hold eachother. If a house is build for it like timber house one thing this was not. It's oure luck most of it and some of this cheap ways most likely the reason It's in so bad shape. If not done all cut corners it migth been in a great shape. 70 years is not the old really compared to really old houses
I have used shims plenty, but don’t think I’d appreciate shims for a large structural beam!
@@drooplug Yes, 70 years later. As it was being torn down and rotten.
I always really liked that house roof shape when I biked by it , hope you two get it back up to shape. Such a lovely view .Good luck , and good luck with the parking situation. So glad it is not being turned into concrete and glass “modern” helicopter landing pad .
it's so fun seeing nick picking up jenna's mannerisms 1:44
You discussing your crafting makes me excited for the day you get to crochet sat by a full pool!
Maybe a good idea to hire a contractor to do your roof, they will more likely be able to get permitted and get your house dried in, then you can finish the rest at your leisure, leaving it open may likely cost you more money and work. Enjoy your videos, this is just a suggestion.
I love watching you kids and your crazy wood projects. Don't step on a nail.
I absolutely adore Nick's finds and fun facts about how this house was built mistake by mistake.
Love their way of communicating !🥰
How about some sheets of 1 inch plywood on the floor to snowshoe the blow when those beams hit the floor... Spare the floor
When he sang the baby song I was so happy. I have that song on my Spotify and I un-ironically love it so much. It's so good. I want more music 🎶
the fact you haven't broken every window in the house=kudos!
I came for the crochet, I'm fully invested in watching the house now x❤❤
I miss your fiber craft videos. don't get me wrong I love the renovating videos and I think it's amazing what you and your partner are doing, bring this house back to life its very fun to watch and learn from. I've been watching your older videos for the past few weeks and it's so cool to see the older projects you've made. keep up the great work I always look forward to your videos every week. your sponsor for the video remind me of how much I do miss your other contant.
I hope you are both SO PROUD OF YOURSELVES for, my god, what you have both achieved!!!!!!! Watching it all, from the beginning, it is also so obvious that you are both perfect for each other. The way you have both worked so diligently as a team......you can conquer anything life will throw at you after doing this. Sending all the best from 'down under'. Please continue to take care guys. I can't wait to see how the house is and seeing you both sitting in it relaxed and enjoying your dream home. It will truly be worth it. You are both inspirational as to what you can achieve when you really want to. I take my hat off to you.
7:00 All these little issues you've found with the construction and the ways they cut corners or didn't do things right-this house has still stood the test of time. Despite poor maintenance, it's still standing. If it were properly maintained, this house, with all its imperfections, would still be standing strong 50 years from now.
Unless The Big One happens. We're due a 9.0 earthquake, could happen any time (or in 100 years)
I'm super impressed with Nick and Jenna every time I see a new video. You two are amazing!!

Hard hats!! You guys rock! 🎸 I do worry A LOT when I watch you two!! 😮
14:54 look at that confidence in front of a window. Pro Wii golf ⛳️ player right there.
Love the house project. BC is one of my favorite places in the world. Hope you get some permits soon. Subscribed.
Grunting does actually work! It’s called a Kiap a fellow grad student did his thesis on it 😊
Is there a video showing where this is going? So far it feels like a home removal series, but I am in love with the process!
hey jenna i just wanna say i love watching your videos and i’m gonna be with yous throughout the hole house video
You guys are so chill and encouraging!! What a great duo
Go get a genie lift. Buy a used one and sell it after the project. It's cheaper than a broken window or injury.
It’s so wild seeing the fireplace and just empty structure around it - I feel like it was just yesterday you were showing us around, clearing the rooms of stuff and peeling back carpets! Now look at you! 👏 (I’m so invested lol) 😂❤
I wonder what percentage of the house will be left once the initial removal is done
The views from this home are amazing
I get the feeling you guys go through like a dozen reciprocating saw blades a day, or more. But also, one of the easier ways of getting rid of old shrubs is cutting the roots like you did there. I learned that recently after tackling some ancient bushes that had annoyed me for years and assumed I'd never be able to get out because of their location.
Congratulations! You’ve done so well and made a lot of headway. Kudos to both of you. ❤❤
A shim is a thing wedged, shoved, or otherwise introduced into a space to make something that is too small or too loose stay in place.
You two are the least orthodox duo to take on this demo job. From the start I was like ok they are doing good work. But the removal of those roofs was the chefs kiss. Color me impressed. You both have more juevos than me and I’ve done renovations before. Well done.
I love how Nicky offers you choices in what thing you want to do and never underestimates your strength 💪 He’s so good at giving gentle guidance without bossing anyone around!!
I mean your channel is the biggest discover of this year for me, the level of humor and dedication - ooooh my god!
