Came here from Chicago. In Wongamat Beach part of Pattaya. Pay about $650 a month for a condo. Too much. But it has a great view and great amenities. Food here. I eat brunch at a western restaurant for about $7 a day. Then hit Topps or the street cart for dinner. $3-4 a day. Expat health insurance about $125 a month.
It’s so much cheaper here. My basement apartment in Roscoe Village in Chicago was $1500 a month. Food was at least $600-700 a month. And I cooked. I enjoyed cooking. Then the car and all that. Had beater . 20 years old. So not that bad but still an expense. And finally I was paying $600 a month in health insurance there.
The American Dream is if not dead, then dying.
Tell my kid everyday to get a a digital nomad skillset and get out of the US. Make $40-50k a year in SE Asia and live BETTER than in the US , save some money and invest than you would making DOUBLE that and just treading water in LA, Chicago , NYC, Miami. Etcetra. It’s crazy. The new “magic number” to retire in the us is $3.25 million. Most people don’t even have and $500 in their checking account for an emergency

Let's see USA, West Coast state in Q1 2024 was:
    housing $3K
    food $$$ $1K
Cars $$$ $1K (ins & maintenance ) - I agree with you on this one, so good to live without a car
    Extras stuff 2K$
    Total: $7K/Month
Living a better life in Philippines & Thailand : cost $2K
So glad I left to USA. No plans to go back.

I Live in Nevada, and only eat organic, mostly from Whole Foods and Sprouts. For just me, I spend $600-800/month. I has gone up perhaps 250% from 2017/2018. I do worry a bit about organic food sources in Jomtien, but I can trust Thai food to be less GMO and pesticide ridden, than here.

There are no real food safety standards in Thailand, the non-profit agency, Thailand Pesticide Alert Network, reported that almost 64% of Thailand's produce exceeds its Maximum Residue Level (MRL) & therefore should be deemed unsafe for human consumption.

In Canada 2024, Alberta is one of the relatively more affordable provinces. Cost of living here for us is 2000$ mortgage, 150 house insurance, 350 property taxes, 200 gas/power bill, 120 car insurance, 150 gasoline and we can get by on a month of food for probably 500 if we try. Approximately 3500$ a month just for basic survival that is for me and my wife only no kids no fancy dinners.

Great Video keeping it real even Asia is not immune to inflation. The more i travel the more i keep away from Western food i now mainly eat at local restaurants the food is usually better but can be spicey. I have noticed in places like Vietnam a beer that was about 80c a couple of years ago is now $1.40 AUD not alot but in percentage terms its a lot. Work hard in your western country then enjoy it in SEA.

Here,in canada also the cost of living is going crazy, you can find a apartment less than 1500 can $, food has doubled,if you want to eat good you need about 800 a month, the car about 1000 a month, one good thing we have a public insurance system ،however it's becoming more and more difficult for most of the people to get on with.

Man. I like your content. I'm moving to Jomtien in about a month and a half. Retiring (early) airline pilot and I'll be living there with my Cambodian girlfriend. If I had to pay out of pocket for the same health care for the same level of coverage my company provides, I'd be paying about $2300 per month. I've already signed up for a top-tier insurance plan for $2300...PER YEAR (Also getting my younger GF insurance for $700 per year. Same coverage). Sold the boat. Sold the RV. Truck last to go. As you said, every motor adds a considerable expense. Repair, maintenance, insurance, and registration. Had fish and chips and 1 beer last night. With tip: $30. Nothing special. ......Can't wait to get there!

$540 a month for rent seems a bit pricey. Are you just adding up the daily rate or did you negotiate a monthly rate? Friend of mine is paying $350 a month for a nice condo in Jomtien.
Btw I’m paying just over $500 a month for trash healthcare in the states and it’s only me. I was paying close to $750 a month for the platinum plan in 2023 but the rates for 2024 jumped to almost $850 a month and that’s just too ridiculous. So I went down to a Bronze High Deductible Plan. Which Travel Insurance do you go through?

Whoever that can't afford living in Southeast Asia probably spends alot of money on clubs, bars, girls, alcohol. Otherwise, I don't see how it is expensive.

Thats one of the main attraction to visit Thailand for retirees not for scorching hot climate, spicy food and noise pollution.

@@humoursque8447 I don't mind hot weather but air pollution is a concern. But I guess if I live in Hua Hin or Jomtien or Phuket near the ocean, air quality is better.

      Well you may be correct

What are your monthly expenses? I think $2,000 USD a month is reasonable for a single person like me that is not into bars, clubs, girls, alcohol but enjoy travel and going out to eat.

I like it, but I like that quieter town that’s right beside it. That’s more my jam. I’ll probably end up going there instead. I forgot the name.

Yup.....I can see that logic. In WA I don't pay a state tax and OR (next door) has no sales taxes. So then, paying NO STATE income taxes (and shopping in OR) certainly is a PLUS (for me). Not to mention that I save on tax filings because there is only one set of tax filing to do (Federal Taxes). The H&R block lady said to me (once upon a time) that I saved an extra $100 because I didn't have to file a state tax form (like OR people).
Back before I retired, I learned that there were like 5 states that didn't have a state income tax.@@RetireandGo
