This is proper Tetris, the best Tetris game in a while since EA and Ubisoft ruined it. Also, it's a miracle a Puyo Puyo game makes it here to begin with.
karnovrpg You can't ruin Tetris. Sure if Ubisoft ruins it, there's always at least one version of Tetris that uses SRS, like Tetris Party, and EA's Tetris Ultimate (though it's tetramino movement is GOD AWFUL).
Sure you can ruin Tetris, you just need a greedy publisher to hold the license hostage. Jim Sterling did a video on it. They even took unofficial, better versions of Tetris off the Google store because EA wanted to sell their crappy version.
Well, that's a bit debatable. In any case, I believe the Tetris name shouldn't be trademarked to begin with. Like Chess, it's a timeless, historic game.
Y'know; people crap on PPF's dub cuz of how bad it sounded (and not saying it wasn't trash), but I honestly like how with PPF's dub they actually tried to match the JP version/personality of each character (excluding carbuncle) PPT has good VAs, but it seems like all they cared about were sounding good, not WHO they sounded like. Personally tho, I like both dubs
Needless is the correct way to address the story on Puyo Puyo Tetris. I actually appreciate it. Instead of trying to Pull a Hollywood-Makes-Dragonball by going excessively serious, but instead they embrace the fact that it's ridiculous and tag along for chained comic relief. Everything will make sense once yo umeet Schezo.
Dath Mach I love Tetris. I can mindlessly play for hours and days at a time. I wasnt sure if I'd be into the game and bought it anyway. A.d.d.i.c.t.e.d. I feel challenged. It's refreshing but frustrating.
I'll tell you why its hyped. It's been years since Puyo Puyo has been localized and I hear this is the best Tetris game. Shove them together, it's going to be extremely fun. Not only that, it's coming on the Switch. You'll be able to play it anywhere. The demo is really good for people that won't really be playing it, but if you will be playing it a ton, then yeah, the full game is a good deal. I am interested in Puyo Puyo and Tetris, and I want to get seriously better. I've been playing with a demo a lot so this game will be perfect for me. Now, if only we can somehow shove Tetris Attack/Puzzle League (my favorite puzzle and arguably my best puzzle skills), then you've made the perfect game for me.
Admittedly the SUPER hardcore Tetris fans still swear by Tetris the Grand Master as the best Tetris game. But I do wonder if Puyo Puyo Tetris is the best Super Rotation System Tetris. (SRS being a change to how rotation works demanded by the Tetris company that a lot of Tetris fans hate)
Maybe it is lol. I just hear some people saying this was the best Tetris game, but I don't really play Tetris. So, some people might argue this is the best Tetris game. Either way, I'm mostly in it for the Puyo side and swap mode is a blast.
The excitement of Puyo Puyo Tetris is mostly from the English Puyo Puyo fanbase. It's been 13 years since the last English release of Puyo Puyo so it's kind of a celebration we're all having. We're all glad people are getting really into the game though. Let's hope for more games here.
I hope Puyo Puyo doesn't die again. Since it's rated E10+, it looks like they're trying to push the game's original appeal overseas, as opposed to botching it into a children's game. Most of its overseas fans are adults anyway, cause it's a very unique puzzle game with cheerful characters. I mean, if they must do so anyway, I hope they do a better job at pitching it to the kiddies. The games are still hella fun to play, so I don't care if they have to childize the story. But, dang, if doing so drives people away like it did with you, then I'm scared for this series' future. In the original game, they had so much solid adult humor. But, at this rate, it looks like everyone is sticking to a demo, so I guess this series will not last as long as I thought it would. But, I guess maybe it will open up potential for an even bigger revival in the future. Also, don't forget that you can switch to alternate voices, too. They're more faithful to the Japanese originals for the most part, but mainly serve to be more quiet.
Medachod I feel like sega is gonna introduce Puyo Puyo like they did with the Project DIVA series. Theyll see how many loyal fans there are and start bringing titles (probably digitally only) slowly but surely. Perhaps listen to fans if they really want physical copies or localizations a bit faster.
+ahchurro111, Well, considering the first release is physical, I think they will all be physical. And even if they're not, which is very unlikely since there exists no digital only Puyo Puyo title, the console is region-free.
Medachod the console is region free, yes, but not everyone can read Japanese (for the story anyway, I'm sure navigating menus can't be THAT hard) + I think they made physical to try and bank off Tetris knowers, unlike project DIVA where the general public wouldn't know Miku. We'll just have to wait and see what Sega/Atlus does from here.
+ahchurro111, They'll definitely continue to make Puyo Puyo in physical form, though. Miku is not even on the same scale cause nobody necessarily hates Puyo Puyo and it's the second most popular puzzle game of all-time if you count how the internet sees it and not just by how much it's been overseas. Though, if Dual Audio is never a thing, I'm indefinitely going to import. Sure, I miss out on the story, but TH-cam does exist. I can just read it there and keep the voices I love. As for menus, well, it seems likely they'll implement an option for English menus at some point since they know people will import it now and that makes perfect sense. Heck, most imports I have normally have English menus, so I don't know why Puyo Puyo still feels so outdated in that regard. But, at this time, we can only wait. I am going to place my cards down for the series not lasting after it's standalone and not with Tetris anymore, but that's the sad fate of people judging something purely on its aesthetic, which is depressing cause lots of games are judged this way. I personally want it to succeed, but I'll probably rely on fan translations for the story regardless. Primarily because they did loophole some of it and its context is still true, but I just prefer the wit in the Japanese original better. Oh, and Arle sounds humorously more obnoxious and tomboyish, which I love a lot.
Part of the charm when Puyo Puyo first came out was the fact Compile were using characters from their RPG series Madou Monogatari. You play as Arle on her path to beat Satan, the dark prince who has an affection for hawaii shirts. On her path, Arle encounters a lot of more or less ridiculous characters, such as a tea-loving skeleton, a territorial dancing fish, or a childhood friend who always ends up sounding unintentionally perverse. Arle always ends up offending the characters and they battle it out in Puyo It's never a game that has taken itself too serious, but its multiplayer appeal. When Sega took over after Compile went bankrupt, they added a big layer of cutesy graphics and music. It's one of the first puzzle games to have an esports competition in Japan as far as I know.
I was certain I wanted to try it because I realized I played a similar game when I was a kid. The game was Kirby's Avalanche on Super Nintendo. And only now realize it was actually Puyo Puyo with a Kirby skin. lol Never had any game like Puyo Puyo since back then so I will certainly get this soon.
Not sure if anyone said this already, but the story and voice acting thing is the norm in Puyo Puyo. And picking characters really affects the Puyo drops and AI.
yeah definitely, even some of the sound effects are the same. Loved that game too. Wish we could get that on the switch along with renegade ops from way back in the ps3 days.
I loved how you mentioned Bean Machine at 4:05. I played that with my friends way too during lunch at high school. I loved Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine so much I had this game pre-ordered before the switch even came out.
I had the same thoughts when I first played the Japanese demo. For me, it was my lack of understanding Japanese. When the US demo came out, I played it more and actually got my wife to play with me. I'll definitely buy the game. It makes me wish they would bring back Dr. Mario/Tetris form SNES. Ahhh the good ol days.
I just like the idea of taking two puzzle games and making you play them both at the same time. It was the main appeal for Tetris & Dr. Mario. Next they need to mix Tetris Attack & Wario's Woods. =P
I found this game last night completely by accident and just laughed my butt off for like three hours. I understand the adventure mode is not everyone’s cup of tea but it was so unexpected and random and I loved every minute of it
just pointing out that there actually is a purpose in selecting characters. different characters have different "dropsets", which affects the order in which colors and shapes drop. this overall adds to the strategy to the game, as for the voices, i agree they are terrible, but I think they can be turned down in the options menu. like this so he can see.
Your original title sounds so much better... a shame that quite a few people won't get the Kubrick reference (and maybe why it's not "TH-camy" enough...).
Damn, this is more interesting than I thought. I thought it was literally tetris with 'puyo puyo' put on the front, like a Deluxe Tetris or 3D Tetris or any other clone.
Actually u can play without choosing a character if u play from the title screen. It give u the option of puyo, Tetris, or fusion (if u have it on the switch). Swap lasts 27 seconds each for puyo and Tetris.
Having just bought it, agreed on the Swap Mode. It creates this sort of dynamic, cliff hanger intensity where many times an even game can turn into a race against one player blowing up on one side vs another player blowing up on the other side and trading torturous survival rounds until someone breaks
If you can't stand the voices, go to the options and turn sound effects off. It will mute the voices, but the sound effects as well. You can still play the music however.
My daughter loves puyo puyo and I enjoy Tetris so we both get to play what we want. Fun as a multi-player game. I had my doubts till the demo came out, downloading tomorrow :)
I LOVE THIS GAME! I downloaded the Demo weeks ago in English and playing solo or multi is fun. I love the swap mode its fun! I preordered this game weeks it ago. I am more excited for this than Arms. Tetris is soo much fun! and with PuyoPuyo its even better.
I've got some fond memories of Puyo pop fever on GameCube. Getting it in a few days, on PS4. I don't have a switch yet and I don't want to wait to play it.
The only difference between characters (in terms of stats or abilities) is the enemy ai (no, not the character "Ai"). There's no way of seeing which character is which difficulty. They just... have different difficulties from other characters.
"I don't understand the appeal of Puyo Puyo Tetris" the appeal for me is that this is the first time puyo puyo has come to the west in a really really long time. the last time it really came to the west is when it was released as puyo pop fever, and before that, it was released as dr. robotnik's mean bean machine or kirby's avalanche, so it wasn't even its original name. it's nice to see it's finally getting released as it should be and that people are actually getting excited about it.
honestly, same here! I was never one for puzzle games, but I'm about done with BotW and needed something to play on the Switch. 5 min after downloading the demo I was hooked. It's so so so addictive. And I'm bad at it! Asked my gf to play a round with me and now she's hooked too. Our free time is now dedicated to beating each other. Can't wait for the full game :)
Japanese demo allows first to three where as the English demo only allows one game for some strange reason. Also hoping Sega patches the Japanese voices in as those are 10x better than the English ones.
Can you play solo Tetris without having to do versus against other players, a CPU, or the mash up mode? The extra stuff is all cool, but I am mainly looking for basic solo Tetris.
I really like it so far, but I cannot play it with only one joy con because I can not play Tetris without a d-pad sadly. The control stick messes me up so bad. But when playing with two joy con(s?) the whole game is really fun. (Although I've mostly stuck to multiplayer.)
Guys, 3:53 you see his falling piece flicking between puyos and terominoes. Why is that? Is that just the way the mode Is? Seems like it would be impossible to make strategies if it's basically random?
Me and my sister been playing puyo puyo and tetris since the Japanese demo, we like it so much that we bought puyo puyo tetris 2 and puyo puyo champions
For Mario Kart I would love a claw on a stretchy cord that you can use to grab a person in front of you and sling them back behind you. Yea! Or for the cars to have doors that opened so you could fly by them and knock them off....(I've always wanted to do that in real life)
Gotta say, the demo made me two things: 1) more addicted to the game than I want to admit 2) hate the ojou-sama girls from Tetris with all of my heart (they are the ones on the lowest line on the right, where the Tetris characters are located)
I tried the demo and I've gotta say, I'm really hooked on the game. It's a lot of fun and it's challenging, especially when I play against my brother. I just wonder tho, is there a Normal Tetris and Normal Puyo Puyo game mode?
One of my sister's friends had introduced me to this game, and I downloaded the demo on the Switch. I hated that specific friend, and I wanted to hate this game more than anything. But I just... couldn't. The game was just so fun to me, especially Tetris. Playing with my two sisters made it more fun for me as well, and I wanted the full game so badly. Finally, I got the full game and I love it to bits. 4-row clears, T-spins, Perfect Clears, god, it all gripped me in. Obviously, I'm better at Tetris, but this game also gives you the option to play the other mode, and its another thing I love about it. And the CHARACTERS~! I'm s o affectionate about one of the characters, Tee, and the story mode (in a contradiction to this video) made me love him even more. I love their voices, ESPECIALLY Tee's alt voice. Anyways, great video! (btw, the scenes I saw you playing in this vid- um- you play bad, sorry (^:)
My wife is very fussy when it comes to video games. But I downloaded the demo for it and we've played nearly every day together. I've found the local multiplayer fantastic, particularly on swap mode. So yeah I am actually looking forward to getting the full version.
Puyo Puyo Tsu is THE best competitive puzzle game ever concieved! On it's own it's mildly amusing, but once you can setup a 19 chain, it's... Meh. But bring an equally skilled opponent in and it is so addicting! It becomes a battle to rival any fighter or FPS, a battle of wits, speed isn't always best either, as in Tetris, sure setting up a big chain is fun and I used to hate being killed by harassment, but as you learn to incorporate it into your game, this is the part of the game that makes or breaks you and those wars of attrition, looking for any advantage you can get to build a bigger chain, waste your opponents time or space or outright ruin their plans, it goes from really simple to impossibly complex and you never feel like you've truly mastered it, but digging down after a large attack, getting that 12 chain after a long harassment battle, winning that tennis match or just breaking your chain into multiple follow-ups to destroy your opponents hopes of making a comeback is so satisfying and when they manage to dig or they harass you to death, you aren't even mad as you look back to see what you could have done better or how they managed what seemed impossible! I'd urge anyone who loves puzzlers and likes to compete to check out Puyo!
Well, if you don’t like the voices, you could buy/preorder the steam version where there is an actual option to switch between JP and US. (But if you did that this wouldn’t be called “Nintendo” life now would it?!?)
I never had a second thought about this game but grabbed the demo so my non-gamer wife could check it out wuth me. SO FUN. We had an absolute blast in fusion mode and now I'm planning on buying it day 1. And yeah those characters are ridiculous but thier annoying voices made it even funnier for us since we just laugh and mimic the phrases while we play.
honestly i just find it as an amazing time killer. It is enjoyable and is easy just to play a few matches and then get back to serious business or playing it for a long time.
I spent way too much time playing the Japanese demo of Puyo Puyo Tetris. I would put aside Breath of the Wild just play this game. It wasn't until recently that i finally deleted the demo, and bought the American version. I have an addiction!
by the way, the "Dark Prince" character is just straight up known as "Satan" in the Japanese version
Lol!
Imagine getting to the end of a DOOM game only to have to face Satan in a Puyo Puyo match
This is proper Tetris, the best Tetris game in a while since EA and Ubisoft ruined it. Also, it's a miracle a Puyo Puyo game makes it here to begin with.
karnovrpg what was wrong with them
karnovrpg You can't ruin Tetris.
Jim Sterling did a video on it.

karnovrpg Yeah, but... EA is still better than Ubisoft.
Well, that's a bit debatable. In any case, I believe the Tetris name shouldn't be trademarked to begin with. Like Chess, it's a timeless, historic game.
Didn't like the voice acting?
Be thankful you're not hearing 2004's Puyo Pop Fever voice acting.
WarioBrose GO. GO GO. READY STEADY GO. ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE L-L-LIGHTNING BOLT!

I mean Tetris is good, Puyo Puyo is good, combine both of them and you got an awesome game.
My experience:
A new tetris game with a japanese side game huh? Well I'm not going to buy it. Hey there's a demo!
*Plays demo*
I need this game
Dath Mach Yeah I loved puyo puyo and Tetris, but I was skeptical about the game until I downloaded the demo
Dath Mach I love Tetris. I can mindlessly play for hours and days at a time. I wasnt sure if I'd be into the game and bought it anyway.
A.d.d.i.c.t.e.d.

Schezo is the most child-friendly character.
“NOW GIVE ME YOUR HAND!”
“I WOULD NEVER RUB YOU THE WRONG WAY!”
AdvancedCheatah “INSERT WHATEVER YOU LIKE!”
he and i are definitely NOT sleeping together
"Let us score together"
"Let me assualt a girl"
"Child friendly"
Schezo: I WILL FORCE MYSELF UPON HIM!
Schezo: "The time has come for me to clear my reputation, by assaulting this young girl!"
"Insert whatever you'd like!"
Things come easy when you wield a sword like this one!
"we should advance on her slowly..."
Schezo: "I will reclaim my honor by assaulting this little girl!"
I think most of the hype was possibly because of Puyo Puyo. We didnt get a english Puyo Puyo game since puyo pop fever back in 2004.
Miluqu2061 yeah. That's what i was hype for.
i recall being able to turn off sound effects, music, and voices in the pre-match settings
The excitement of Puyo Puyo Tetris is mostly from the English Puyo Puyo fanbase. It's been 13 years since the last English release of Puyo Puyo so it's kind of a celebration we're all having.

Is anyone reminded of street fighter puzzle 2 turbo?
yeah definitely, even some of the sound effects are the same. Loved that game too. Wish we could get that on the switch along with renegade ops from way back in the ps3 days.
It's kinda different though, but damn do I miss playing that game!

I bought Batman: Arkham Origins.

I'm sorry.

The post-game chapter about Schezo is hilarious.
I thought they would censor Schezo. Somehow, they made him worse.
I loved how you mentioned Bean Machine at 4:05. I played that with my friends way too during lunch at high school. I loved Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine so much I had this game pre-ordered before the switch even came out.

Apocalypsehigh i really like the robots voice.
Bought this today. Why did they make the play area so small? So much of the switch screen isn't used vertically!
Your original title sounds so much better... a shame that quite a few people won't get the Kubrick reference (and maybe why it's not "TH-camy" enough...).
Dr. Robotnik's mean bean machine was my introduction to puyo puyo as well. In fact, I didn't know it existed outside that game until last year.
You can change the settings so the pieces don't snap fall when you press down.
Probably gonna be my first Switch game, unless I get the system around July...hard to say.
When I first saw puyo puyo tetris I thought who would actually buy this. I downloaded the demo and now I might get it.
4:05 Come on, where's the love for Kirby's Avalanche?
Damn, this is more interesting than I thought.

the game has a option in the settings to turn the voices off if they trouble you alot :)
also I'm that select I'm hype for adventure. but then again I'm a puzzle legend
Don't forget each character has different stats meaning one character might drop more junk then another and so on
Yall use the joystick?
Nah, use the dpad
my copy i preordered hasnt shipped to my gamestop yet :(
My daughter loves puyo puyo and I enjoy Tetris so we both get to play what we want. Fun as a multi-player game. I had my doubts till the demo came out, downloading tomorrow :)
Why would you love the monotone voice rather than the voices that have more emotion?
I LOVE THIS GAME! I downloaded the Demo weeks ago in English and playing solo or multi is fun. I love the swap mode its fun! I preordered this game weeks it ago. I am more excited for this than Arms. Tetris is soo much fun! and with PuyoPuyo its even better.
I've got some fond memories of Puyo pop fever on GameCube. Getting it in a few days, on PS4. I don't have a switch yet and I don't want to wait to play it.

I've played the Japanese version and can confirm that it's mostly Tetris in the beginning.
The only difference between characters (in terms of stats or abilities) is the enemy ai (no, not the character "Ai"). There's no way of seeing which character is which difficulty. They just... have different difficulties from other characters.
Brilliant video as always
Impressive switch between english and Japanese at 4.47
I thought this game was dumb when I first saw it, but then I downloaded the Japanese demo and can't stop playing it. It's so addictive!
"I don't understand the appeal of Puyo Puyo Tetris"
the appeal for me is that this is the first time puyo puyo has come to the west in a really really long time. the last time it really came to the west is when it was released as puyo pop fever, and before that, it was released as dr. robotnik's mean bean machine or kirby's avalanche, so it wasn't even its original name. it's nice to see it's finally getting released as it should be and that people are actually getting excited about it.
Yes, you can use multiplayer in the Japanese demo.
honestly, same here!
I'm still waiting for Smosh Games to make an honest game trailer for this game.
7:41 that's Y I turn off hard drop when playing with a single joycon. I can't afford a pro controller :(
What's not to love? Puyo Puyo is fun, Tetris is a classic. Both together is just crazy, and it's an accessible game both multiplayer and solo.
I wander how much Nintendo has given him to say he liked it
I literally only got the game for the swap mode because I got a tournament coming up
Puyo Puyo Tetris is a great party game, but you only need the demo. It has multiplayer battle and swap. Thats all ya need
I think the hype for this game is more to do with the possibility of Puyo Puyo Chronicles being localised.
Loving the demo. Can't wait until the end of the week to play even more Dr Robotnik!
Guys, 3:53 you see his falling piece flicking between puyos and terominoes. Why is that? Is that just the way the mode Is? Seems like it would be impossible to make strategies if it's basically random?
Leafy Chan I know that, but one of his pieces is changing type while falling?
If he didn't like the adventure mode he obivously didn't see shezo
Me and my sister been playing puyo puyo and tetris since the Japanese demo, we like it so much that we bought puyo puyo tetris 2 and puyo puyo champions
For Mario Kart I would love a claw on a stretchy cord that you can use to grab a person in front of you and sling them back behind you. Yea! Or for the cars to have doors that opened so you could fly by them and knock them off....(I've always wanted to do that in real life)
I have pre-ordered the Nintendo Switch and it hasn't arrived jet because the Nintendo switch is sold out in the whole country.
The Japanese demo has more options than the English demo.
Gotta say, the demo made me two things:
1) more addicted to the game than I want to admit
2) hate the ojou-sama girls from Tetris with all of my heart (they are the ones on the lowest line on the right, where the Tetris characters are located)
'a select group'
Loving the demo. And you're right, it's Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine :)
Kirby's avalanche
ALEX I LOVE YOU
Same *no homo*
He is playing with a joystick?!?!?!? You're supposed to be playing with the buttons
I'm really into this game. Makes great quickplay in handheld mode.
2:53 agreed. I only play as zed too.
why isnt ghost warrior 3 on the switch ;%;
I always just end up playing either Tetris or Puyo Puyo never the fused version. Mostly Tetris.
Japanese people love puzzle games i remember having a japanese puzzle game for gba and playing it for hours
You can turn off the sounds before you start and I really like the game:)
Should have gone w/ the original title. That was beautiful!
I spent way too much time playing the Japanese demo of Puyo Puyo Tetris. I would put aside Breath of the Wild just play this game. It wasn't until recently that i finally deleted the demo, and bought the American version. I have an addiction!
I wonder why people mis-pronounce Puyo so much.
Your content is very entertaining.
