  • Here's my music theory breakdown of the 12 songs you learn in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Koji Kondo proves how legendary a composer he is by crafting 12 different songs using a starting block of just five single notes, and I dive into them to see what music theory is happening behind them. Enjoy!

From writing the main theme of the Legend of Zelda series IN ONE NIGHT BEFORE RELEASE, to creating a 5 note only OST for one of the greatest games of all time. Koji Kondo is definitely one in a million in the video game music world.

We still talking about this man's music while he is 63 year old now and near his well deserved retirement.. May in a hundred years still be talking about his works

5:00 when your talking about the F-B interval, the name of the interval would be the _tritone_ an interval consisting of 6 semitones, or 3 whole tones, as the name suggests. In the context of a Lydian scale, it would be an augmented 4th.
7:20 WRONG!!! Song of storms in in D Dorian, as the chord structure follows a Dm-Em-F-Em, whereas if it were in minor, that would be a diminished E chord, which doesn’t sound right

@@fedoraguy6774 I mean Dorian is a minor mode, I get half a point right? 😂

I've been trying to learn some theory on bass for a bit now, and this is a really cool video. The music from Ocarina of Time will forever be imprinted in my brain and it's awesome to see kind of what Koji was going for when writing these pieces ❤
Edit: The only song I disagree on is Nocturne, I thought that had some of the most interesting stuff going on, at least the lead melody. Idk if it's chromatics, or switching keys, but it's very unsettling, and somehow ends on a note or key that gives you a tiny bit of hope. I do agree that it's a weird one, but that's what I found fascinating with it ❤

Kondo was really creative with this aspect ofthe musical creation. There are lots of sampling on the soundtrack, specially on the temple songs. But these melodies are so memorable!!
About nocturine of shadow, I always thought this melody suits well the ambience of the torture chamber / house of the dead temple with that starting melody. And the follow up is that common theme of bringing some sort of hope to the melody bringing some major aspect.
The only track i find a little decieving is the prelude of light. The starting melody is uplifting, but it just dies. And that's it... hahha
Ps... just another thing I think is kinda decieving is the fact that the second sections of Minuet of the Forest and Serenade of Water are soooo similar.

a thing unrelated to this video, but related to you that i discovered today:
if you didn't know, when playing an album on youtube music without premium, for every song that has a music video, lyric video, official visualizer video or something like that, youtube music will play that video instead of the album song
if you play strapping young lad's alien, youtube music will play your cover of "love?" instead of the album song

While I agree that, as a song, Nocturne of Shadow is probably the most awkward of the bunch, to its credit, it is used in the part of the game that leans the hardest into horror and that melody does give me the feeling of something disquieting and perhaps sinister which is, at the very least, fitting.

Requiem of Spirits is a track that is somehow very emotional, but yet a little bit cheerful and happy. You can hear it in Twilight Princess at one of the howling stones, which in the context of a world shrouded in darkness, and link's soul trapped in a Wolf is somehow very fitting.
For me, It perfectly captures that feeling how things are not great right now, but the shift to higher notes also reminds that it could be a better place as the song fades away.
Great video as always by the way, all these tracks are bringing back memories.

Hey there! I subscribed after watching your live learning of wild woods, it was fascinating watching your mind decipher a song in real time. It’s a shame there are not many videos like that one. Nevertheless, these deconstructions are really interesting!

Cool to see the works behind these, I always remembered playing the major and minor songs and seeing the similarities. Personally I watch piano tutorials to learn which could be less than ideal.
How did you learn? You seem to extend the melodies with chords and a lot of rhythm. It adds so much more power while making it sound classic.
    I’m super jealous!

Word of advice. Super CastleVania IV is still celebrating it's 30th anniversary, So if wouldn't mind. Please do cover Dracula's Theme from SCVIV in Symphonic Metal format.
